Aussies ‘looking down the barrel of climate change’

Everybody here seems to be talking about climate change, but when it comes to action, there are two very different responses to be seen in Australia this week. The first will be the discussions at APEC, taking place in Sydney amid intense security. The second couldn't be more different – the practical, dogged and groundbreaking work of conservationists in the country's bush.

Take APEC first. Asia Pacific leaders have started to arrive here in fortress Sydney.

The first to arrive was China’s President Hu Jintao, who entered via Perth, the capital of Western Australia, and had coal on his mind. China’s the most important customer for that state’s big mining companies, buying up natural resources as fast as they can be dug from the ground.

President Bush came next amid the biggest security operation this country has ever seen. His harborside hotel will give him a stunning view of the Opera House – and a three-mile long, nine foot tall security fence, which the local media has dubbed the "Great Wall of Sydney," to keep protesters at bay.

For weeks, the Australian authorities have been calling this meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders the "climate change summit," hoping it might produce a concrete commitment on limiting greenhouse gases. That was always a long shot, especially now that Bush is hosting his own summit on the issue in Washington later this month and he probably won’t want to be upstaged in Sydney.

Australians hope to restore the Scottsdale reserve to its original state and create a wildlife corridor up Eastern Australia.

Hu’s side trip to Perth underscored his priorities – continuing to fuel China’s booming (and hugely polluting) economy. Fast-growing India is also reluctant to sign up to anything that will restrict its growth.

And so Australian Prime Minister John Howard, a late convert to the cause of climate change action, is now trying to downplay his hopes for the meeting, talking more generally about "progress" on the issue.

Many Australians are skeptical about Howard’s climate concerns. But, with an election due later this year, it’s a testament to what an important political issue it has become; respondents in one recent poll named climate change as the single most important external threat facing the country.

That is a reflection of a new reality here, "an extraordinary sea change in public opinion," according to Brendan Mackey, Professor of Environmental Science at the Australian National University in Canberra.

"Our droughts, our floods, our fires have really made people understand just how vulnerable we are to extreme weather events."

We’d visited Professor Mackey in the capital, Canberra, on our way into the bush to witness part of a hugely ambitious conservation project, which has gained wide support – thanks to that new reality.

A sort of climate change corridor
"We know that species are at risk. If we are looking down the barrel of climate change, it’s time to start preparing for that," Owen Whitaker told me, as he bumped along in his pick-up truck on the rough tracks of the Scottsdale reserve.

VIDEO: Going green down under

The reserve has been bought by Bush Heritage, a conservation group, using private and public donations. Whitaker is managing the former sheep farm, working to restore its 3,500 acres to its original form – planting native grass and restoring water sources.

Scottsdale is home to dozens of endangered species, as well kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and the majestic wedge-tailed eagle, which although still plentiful, are seeing their habitats eroded.

Scottsdale will be part of a network of habitats, a sort of climate change corridor, which will eventually stretch 1,500 miles down the length of eastern Australia, from the Alps in the south to the Atherton Tablelands in the north. The idea is to allow species to move with changes in the climate, to more easily migrate if any one habitat is threatened.

Bush Heritage believes it could save hundreds of species of plant and wildlife from extinction. This part of Australia is already into its sixth year of drought.

Some of the land in the corridor is national park already, other land will be bought or landowners will be encouraged to set aside some of their land as part of the corridor.

"We have to give animals some options of they are to survive," said Whitaker, for whom the ultimate aim is to enable fauna to stay one step ahead of climate change. He also knows that even if the leaders of APEC fail to come up with anything meaningful in Sydney, opinion in Australia has moved far enough to give his own project a good chance of success.

If these people really think that man is the cause and the cure for the warming trend, I have a recipe for turning lead into gold that they might be interested in. I'll let it go cheap.
Its a shame,we humans wait until the last moment to react to problems. I have been aware of global problens(warming)and pollution for years. Jimmy Carter tried to make us aware just to find out again MONEY is the root of ALL evil. The earth can not take complete contol of it's self if we don't help her along. The Great Lakes are a perfect example of us working together. This is a world wide problem and the sooner WE ALL work together our children and their children might be able to enjoy LIFE on our planet before it is to late for us humans and then the world will then be able to fix itself... with out us. Thank you I enjoyed reading your work. Buddy Rudolph
its happening all around  us ......
Too little, too late!
Impossible to project a reversal with
the amount of pollution in process of
being doubled from the last century!

As Mr. Bush would say: "Adapt, buy more
air conditioners!" Really.
Dear Ian, I think what the Bush Heritage conservation group is doing will really help save those endangered animals. The meetings about this subject are important, but the actual work of saving these animals will eventually be beneficial to keeping them alive. Working with the landowners to set aside some of their land for the corridor is a good idea. Basically like you stated, regardless of the outcome of the meeting the project should succeed. Keep the animals alive! Peace to all!
It's a hopeless cause, Ya'll.  The money hungry will get their way for the capitalist and the Chinese so-called communists.
Talking, exchanging ideas and developing plans is the first step in working towards solving this problem. It is unfortunate that it may be happening too late to see any results until way after we are all gone, but maybe our children's children can reap some benefit, even if it just to learn about the pitfalls of delusion and denial.
This planet will be much better off once we humans have exterminated ourselves.
respondents in one recent AU poll named climate change as the single most important external threat facing the country.
The ONLY conceivable long-term solution to global warming is population control and not a single government is willing to take on the issue.  As a consequence, earth's biospheres are doomed to radical changes.  The good news is population control will come whether we want it or not.
W,Politics, Big Money, Organized Labor, Base Line Business,Sciencs, Scientists, Environmentalist, Economic fall out, Wars, Draught and Famine..
Folks, it was all written long before any few of us got here.
Do these people know that there is globalwarming happening on other planets in the solar system?
That's all!
I have lived in Australia for quite a while and have never heard of this Scottsdale project. Most likely it is Mr. Mackey's wish project that he is trying to get some publicity for.
We need to educate everyone about this problem and how to stop from destroying the world. Also need to pick the right people to solve problems all around the world. Why is that not happening now? People from each country need to vote for the right person to run their country who will put more effort to protecting earth than destroying it. Please get your President to make this a top priority. If they dont then vote for one that will or get yourself or someone that will make it happen.
TZAZ, its too bad that the desert sun has baked your mind to the point that you fail to see the writing on the walls. Global warming is no longer an obscure belief held by crackpots. Scientist, politicians, and people with different religions, cultures, and values all over the world are noticing an extreme change in the environment. Unfortunately, entire species of plants and animals have become extinct due to man, why is the thought of global warming due to humans such a stretch? Keep your "golden" thoughts.
when you take all mother nature has to offer,, and replace it with nothing, then she will dry up and blow away........................
Someone is always ready to tell us that it's happening on other planets.  Personally I don't give a tinker's damn what is happening on other planets.  In fact the sun seems to be suffering from a very bad case of global warming.  I don't live on the sun.  If we don't smarten up quick we may be trying to do just that.  As Dave said;  "This planet will be much better off once we humans have exterminated ourselves"
We unfortunately have created a situation where the increased and increasing CO2 load in the atmosphere (caused by human appetite for burning fossil fuels) and subsequent  global warming, is only moderated away from runaway planet-wide temperature increases by the particulate pollution we are also putting in the air. Were it not for the the solar-dimming effect and subsequent cooling of the atmosphere caused by particulate pollution (smog), global warming would be a planet-wide emergency of the highest order right now. We have to decrease, not maintain at current levels, both the CO2 and and particulate pollution we are putting in the atmosphere starting now or else it will be too late for humanity keep our world habitable for our children's children. Ironically, decreasing one without the other would be a recipe for accelerated disaster. Also unfortunately, humanity's propensity for unbridled development and consumption gives little hope for gaining the foresight and wisdom to take action now.
Greed trumps concern for the environment. We are doomed and by the time we get governments to give a care, it will be too late. I'm 70, so I will live out my days in relative peace. The newly born, won't be so fortunate.
I am a Canadian living in Hong Kong. It is very hot and humid here in the summer. But I resist the temptation to buy and use any air conditioner, although I can afford one. If everybody does the same, this place will not be a concrete jungle covered by haze all the time.
The biggest threat to Australia right now is that we are running out of water!!! Saving land as nature corridors etc is all very well but we can't do anything without water. John Howard doesn't give a damn about conservation or climate change, he's only saying that so he can try and pull something out of the hat and win the next election. He's due to do that, constitutionally he has to soon, but what is he doing??? Waiting for his numbers to go up so he can see his government returned that has screwed the Australian people for the last 11yrs while he sits back globe trotting and comfortable in Kirribilli.

How about Americans find out what your every day Australian on the street really thinks on issues. What you don't realise is that you're being given a smokescreen so you can't see what's really going on in this country.
Dave St. Louis MO, Boy are you a granola liberal fanatic.  Why are you wanting to exterminate the human race? Why do you buy into the bullshit that humans are to blame?  Do some research, the planet earth has warmed and cooled countless times in it's history.  They were growing crops in greenland 2000 years ago.  And now it's covered with ice.  Ya I can see the earth is warming.  Why do you suspect that it is because of humans? These scientist (capitalist) have have very much to gain if they can purswade common folks and governments that humans are to blame.  There are just as many scientist and climoligist that argue a different point.  You just don't hear about it.  News publishers don't make money that way.  They need a crisis to sell news.  Everything works in cycles, including the earth. Do you think that we should all commit suicide! I tell you what, you do it first and then I will (not). Go hug a tree.
At least most of you are not screaming to "Save the Planet". That's stupid. Mother Earth was here long before we were, and will be here long after 'Man' is a faded memory. What we need to be worried about is "Save the People", and, sadly, nobody who matters really cares, because the problems don't effect them here and now. Just as sadly, nobody who really cares matters enough to get anything done.
It's the new golden rule in action... He who has the gold makes the rules...
Barry, Melbourne - Bush Heritage Australia are legit, try their website. Particularly look at their Board of Directors and the organisations that they work with jointly on projects. I hadn't heard of them prior to reading this article either. I think we'll be hearing more about them in the future when their achievements expand - they seem very results focused.
TZAZ;
You may want to start buying up as much of that lead as you can possibly get your hands on because you are apparently the biggest fool of all. Considering everything that's happened within the last 20 years, things that have never happened before, especially the fact that glaciers and ice masses that have been in tact for many thousands of years are all of a sudden melting at an unbelievable pace, indicates this is not just a cyclical event. Put a little thought into what you're saying!!
I really hope people think that global warming is a farce because the down side to it is death. There is no end of the world coming. A rather awesome display of mother nature will be brought on due to the interior of planet earth is warming up too!!! We are over due for a  pole shift!!! How about the volcano on the canary islands. Palma is what i am referring too!!! This is happening all over the planet. Or i should say this live within 50 miles of the coast line on the east coast. This would help reduce payments on social security. I meant to the usa.
Trouble is folks, we have a serious problem with all the ongoing debate about whether Climate Change is anthropogenic or not. 12,000  years ago, there was ice 1 mile deep where New York now sits. I guess it's been warming at least since then, right? And what about all the other warming and cooling periods (of which there has been at least 5) over the last 500m years? Were they caused by humans? I think not. Humans are merely making matters worse, by the fact that there are twice as many humans on this planet than the planet can cope with. In 20 years time there will be another 3 billion people on this planet. It doesn't take rocket science to figure what's happening here folks! Religion and politics don't even come into it. The planet will do what it has to do. I don't need to remind anyone what Nature can do when she's in a fury.
Wealth is a tool to create sustainable community life and not the end goal.  Unconscious institutions or governments cannot hear this message.  So you and I need to mobilise people all around the world, to make enough noise and peacefully change in the way commerce interacts with the community.  At that point the institutions will be able to hear us.  This is our job and cannot be delegated.  Let's start today.
When I was in 6th grade scientists talked about global warming...many years later when studying for my biology degree my teachers talked about these corridors for wildlife.I am so happy to note that someone is trying to do this!We can make a difference in the world if we try...and we must try or we really are doomed. Do this for your grandchildren...each one of you do something to help the world. I started a wildlife hospital this year...what will you do?
Thanks TZ & Mark for bringing sanity to this subject.  I realize that human Greenhouse Gas Emmissions caused the last major global warming phase 60,000 years ago and the warmest year globally on record is 2005 no 1998 no 1934 OPPS!!!  Also the greenhouse gasses produced in 1862 by global Industrialization started the melting of the glacier in Glacier National Park NOT !!!!!!
This planet is perishable. It's a fact of life. But guess what- you will perish long before the planet will. Another thing- your soul is not perishable. It will live forever- in Heaven or in Hell. Give your life to Jesus, and let him save your soul first. Then you can worry about other things.
Thanks for this expert piece of Journalism about the goings on in my country this week. I disdain to regularly watch network news, given presentation can favour vested intests. This article has therefore given me information I did not have. This article from NBC is balanced, positive and unbiased, and correctly notes the seachange that has happened here. For instance,, in May 2007 we had "Coolaid" airing on channel ten, our most American-content network.

John, you obviously don't have any children or regard for future generations. A truely ignorant Christian Taliban member if there was one. Step down from your pedistal of fear and hate and darkness of ignorance and into the light of science and understanding. Trust logic first, vs. faith that the razor blade won't draw blood and realize that you make a difference in the world. For better or for worse.
While I can say that a great deal of hot air has been released just in the writing of the posts on this blog, remember that climate is still a poorly understood system.  We know a great many of it's parts, but still do not have a clear understanding of exactly how it works.  However, that said, there is some grounds to be concerned about global warming.  The thermohaline currents in the ocean, which warm the east coat of the US and western Europe can and will be disrupted by it.  This will have the effect of lowering temperatures in these areas, causing them to take on weather models similar to other areas along the same lat., such as Siberia.

It is unfortunate, but... the bulk of the facts seem to support the idea that man's actions have taken a naturally occuring upswing in the cycle and made it worse for us.  Politcal ideology aside, this is a serious issue and we ned to start comming up with practical ways to deal with the issue.  If our politicians are too corrupt to do something, we should be rid of them.  Money will be of little use to us in the future, since extinct species don't need it.
The debate about what to do with global warming just ties in further with myriad other environmental issues.  For all naysyers why doesn't the NRDC sponsor a month for them residing in China's most polluted city with daily swims in the local waters and with water consumption restricted to what is locally available.  After they become so entirely sick mentally and physically perhaps environmental issues will rise to the apex where they always have and always will belong.  Humans cannot exist without a healthy environment.  To ameliorate the deleterious effects of detrimental climate change on the "positive" psyche, some conjur up the excuse of previous climate changes.  Yet from my knowledge these changes have wrought tremendous dislocation and hardship on any mammals alive.  Again, to experience the effects of the accretion of warming gases, let us send them to live with the polar bears on the melting pack ice and have them eat "meals ready to eat" dropped by the redployed air force (after we finish our negative return of fighting a war for peace in the oil patch).
Dear Global Warming Skeptics,

It really does not matter if the earth's temperature is being increased by human activities or not. That is a misleading argument to engage in. The question should be, we know higher global temperatures will hurt humankind - how can we slow or reverse this process before irreparable harm is done to our civilization and environment.
Please, all whiners: if you really believe in "CLIMATE CHANGE" being caused by America, then let me see you turn off ALL electricity in your home for 12 hours a day. Then the coal fired generators won't have to be worked so hard. Get rid of your SUVs, and walk. Save gas and CO2 emissions.Oh, too bad about the lousy so-called public transportation. Mandate ALL ( I mean all) government vehicles be hybrids...including Hillary and Bill Clinton's gas-guzzling limo!!!! And end ALL foreign aid for 20 years and direct the money to reestablish a green economy without any of us having to go without!!! It is our money you know. Let the UN suck on that for awhile!!!
TZAZ;
It's attitudes like yours that are the problem. Scientists have been studying ice core samples going back 600,000 years and in all that time, there has never been a warming trend as sudden as the one we have today. The speed at which the earth is warming will not allow animals and humans to adapt quickly enough.

I believe that Global Warming will make all the other problems we have in the world seem trivial by comparison.  75% of the earths fresh water is locked up in ice. When that ice is gone, you will have no more water to drink.  All ice will disappear by 2050 at the rate we are warming now, according to scientists.
Well, whether or not one thinks global warming is caused by man or natural cycles, what I wonder is this: just what IS the effect on the Earth of billions and billions of tons of deadly poisons being pumped into the atmosphere? It's there, and we can see it every day in the cloud of poison that hangs over each and every big city in the world. Surely there is going to be some sort of negative effect? How can there not be? Not to mention all the nasty stuff being put into the rivers, lakes, and oceans. Even if there is a natural warming cycle of some sort, pouring industrial wastes into our environment doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do...does it?
Give your life to Jesus, and let him save your soul first. Then you can worry about other things. John

Guess what John?  God is NOT going to rapture you out of this mess. You can pray till the cows come home and you'll still have the same problem.

The only life you have is the one you're living now so you better take action.  If you have children, do it for them.  The bible was written by people who thought the earth was flat. That won't help you today.
We will NEVER agree on the extent to which mankind is the big villain in this global warming debate, and how much is due to natural cycles. However, we seem to be arriving at a consensus that the phenomenon is real, and is mostly an undesirable thing for life on earth. Hey, that's a start!
You can't tell me that taking the greate amount fossil fuel - CO2 that has been sequestered from the environment for millions of years - in the span of a 100 years won't have a disasterous effect on our climate. These fuels are being taken at rates that are over and above what the Earth is naturally producing. The Earth's environment is a closed system - we can't go and ask for a complete atmosphere change just because we have poluted it. Just because the atmosphere is vast does not mean that at some point in time (NOW) we will not be able to have a disasterous affect upon it. At one point in time we said that the oceans fish stocks were so vast that we couldn't ever have an affect upon them - we now have numerous colapsed fisheries. At one time we thoughtlessly dumped millions of tonnes of garbage into the ocaens (still happening) - now we are seeing the problems associated with that enterprise.

We are the only inhabitants of this planet that are able to completly change our environment to suit our needs (our homes, cars, shopping malls, work places). Do you think that we won't have an effect on the world at large - BOY ARE YOU DREAMING. We MUST change our way of looking at nature - failure to do so will be to our detriment.
Sad!

Regardless of whether climate change is a cyclical, natural occurrence or accelerated by human activity, the proposed Scottsdale project is a stopgap effort at best.  Providing a barrier-free corridor for animals migrating to “cooler” habitats as the planet warms assumes these habitats can support them.  Even with a 1,500 mile pathway of “ideal” habitat, eventually we’ll see critters piling up on a Tasman Sea beach.

A valiant effort and great way to create an extended preserve.  Unfortunately, it doesn't address the sustainability problem caused by logarithmic population growth, and increasing resource utilization to feed its insatiable appetite.

We need to change our core values to fit a reality we just don’t want to admit to.
Oh, I can agree with Mr Spock(the poster).
Does anyone notice that those who tell you the earth was warmer a million years ago, also tell you that the earth is only 8,000 years old.
I think it needs to be clear that there are indeed cycles of warm and cool periods on earth. We are no fools, everybody knows that, that's not the global warming problem. The global warming problem is simply that the earth is warming much too fast due to anthropogenic activity, and it's having an adverse effect on earth's organisms who just can't adapt that fast. Yes, there were crops on Greenland thousands of years ago. And i'm sure it took very, very long before  Greenland became covered in ice, not 100 years.
50 million years ago, when the dinosaurs lived, there were no ice caps. In fact, for most of the history of the planet, there were no ice caps and the situation today (where we actually have 2 of them) may be unique. Today we have 2 ice-caps b/c the position of the continents on the face of the globe has prevented all of the ocean currents from reaching the poles. (Check out a globe.)

Even if we happen to reach a consensus that the earth is warming via C02 emissions, this doesn't necessarily indicate that it will be bad for humans. If 75% of the fresh water is tied up as ice in the caps, the melting of the ice will introduce more water into the water-cycle and could increase the amount of arable and/or forested land on the planet. It is during much colder periods, such as the last ice-age, when more fresh water is tied up in glacial ice, that desertification is prevalent. Of course, one obvious observation is that enough global warming would cause coastal flooding.

The fact of the matter is that the contestants in the current debate on global warming all have political agendas. And politicians like to simplify things. The public has none, or little real unbiased information to consume (books may be your only hope here). And the truth is that climate is an extremely complex system.

GLOBAL WARMING? MAYBE YES! MAYBE NO! - CLIMATE CHANGE IS CYCLICAL. IT IS NATURAL. MAN COULD NOT CAUSE A CHANGE IF HE WANTED TO.  THE EARTH IS IMMENCE, THE EARTH HAS A BUILT-IN SELF REGULATOR TO CONTROL THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE. THE NORTH AND SOUTH POLES ARE HUGE NEGATIVE BTU RESEVOIRS. NOT MANY SCIENTIST MENTION THE "albedo" OF THE EARTH. (REFLECTIVITY) AS THE EARTH IS HEATED BY SOLAR RADIATION, CURRENTS IN THE ATMOSPHERE RISE AND FORM CLOUDS, CLOUDS ARE WHITE AND REFLECT MORE SOLAR RADIATION BACK INTO SPACE COOLING THE EARTH. WITH THE ATMOSPHERE,RAIN,OCEAN AND ATMOSPHERIC CURRENTS, CLOUD FORMATION AND VARIOUS PHYSICAL INTERACTIONS, THE EARTH MAINTAINS AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE. THIS IS SCIENTIFIC FACT, NOT A BUNCH OF B.S. FROM THE IDIOTS ON THE LEFT WHO WANTS TO GAIN CONTROL OVER THE WORKINGS OF THE PLANET BY CLAIMING THAT MAN IS CAUSING GLOBAL WARMING.  REGARDS, HAROLD ARBOUR
Who can confirm that reduces green house gas is surely to end the crisis of Global Warming?
