Topless Putin woos Russians

What do you get if you combine John Locke from "Lost," the Marlboro Man, and a judo master?

Your first guess may not be Russian President Vladimir Putin, but if these pictures are any guide, it would certainly be the right one. (See video profile).

Russian President Vladimir Putin fishes on the Khemchik River on Aug. 15.

Taken earlier this week when Putin took Monaco’s Prince Albert II on a camping trip in southern Russia, they were splashed across the front pages of Russian newspapers and are all posted on the Kremlin’s website.

They show Putin in various states of ruggedness, feeling at home and at peace with the rivers, the mountains, the horses and fish, and not least of all, his own bare chest.

Poster boy for Russia?
Despite some incredulous reactions to Putin allowing himself to be photographed topless on blogs I’ve read here in Russia, "Wilderness Putin," (the action figure doll does not exist yet, but keep your eyes peeled) has been getting a lot of thumbs up here as well. Many bloggers are calling him sexy and wondering if he’s free for a date.

While his wife may not take kindly to the proposition, the reactions should come as no surprise. Like any good politician, part of Putin’s popularity is based on his image. Compared to the Russian and Soviet leaders who came before him, Putin is leading the charge for the young and healthy generation.

At the end of the Soviet era, it was hard to keep up with which 70-year-old, visibly sick leader was in charge. After Leonid Brezhnev died, neither of the next two successors lasted more than 15 months before dying – leading to the joke of a guard demanding to see someone’s ticket to be allowed in to a Soviet leader’s funeral, to which he responds that he has season tickets.

Putin gestures as he takes a break during a hike in the foothills of the Western Sayan Mountains in the Republic of Tuva, on Aug. 15.

But in many ways, Putin’s image is seen in direct contrast to that of his immediate predecessor, Boris Yeltsin. Putin is seen as the anti-Yeltsin. Yeltsin is remembered by many for acting like a buffoon in public, for his alleged heavy drinking and recurring illnesses.

The image of the leader is tied to the times. For many, these memories of Yeltsin are memories of a weak, chaotic Russia that may look amusing to the West, but isn’t faring too well at home.

Along comes Vladimir Putin. The black-belt-in-judo, non-smoking, rarely-drinking, cool and collected leader. While his popularity is certainly tied to his image – leading to everything from Putinka brand vodka to the girl-band pop song "Like Putin" (whose singers look for a man who is "like Putin/full of strength/like Putin/who won’t drink) – Putin’s image is, in turn, mirrored by his era.

This is an era in which Russia is getting stronger, reasserting itself internationally, becoming more stable at home and growing economically. And if it’s the image of a shirtless, machete-wielding president which best represents the man who can do all that and enjoy approval ratings at about 70 percent, maybe it’s not such a bad thing.

I think it is great Putin shows he is just like everyone else. How often do you see other world leaders in a natural setting acting an average citizen. I am not sure I would want to see a picture of President Bush with no shirt. If Putin is comfortable taking his shirt off, all the more to him. I think it is great.
Gerry Ford swam toplees at the White House pool in the mid 70's..So Vald is not that cutting edge...But nonetheless I give him credit for geting out and living what appears to be a healthy and fufilling life, even if he is still a pro soviet union kind of guy...
We went into Iraq with a shock and awe program that was supposed to intimidate the Arab world into submission. If, as Mr. Cheney implied, we slapped them around they would show us some respect.  And now almost everybody outside of the U.S. wants to see us get our butts kicked in the disaster in Iraq.  At the same time, we went out of our way to needlessly humiliate a weakened Soviet Union and a militarily weak China.  And now the chickens come home to roost as we head to another cold war, but with a far larger and more powerful collection of adversaries.  But all is not lost.  The massive military spending will be manna from heaven for all those right wingers in the weapons business.  As we approach 50% of total military defense spending in the world, we will soon hear that we need to boost the military spending even more.  The worse our foreign policy gets, the more money these guys make.
I think it's all propaganda to push Putin's image as strong, healthy, and youthful--which at age 54, he is young among world leaders. The pictures are meant to get Russians thinking about how cool Putin is and how it wouldn't be so bad if he suspended the law that would allow him to rule for another term. Why else were those pictured splashed across so many newspapers? Der Spiegel, German news has more pictures.  Some of them look a bit "beefcake" to me: http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/0,5538,23978,00.html
Great
He is loocking like a new world lider .
One example of great President.
I think someone should take a pic of Arnold S. and Impose the head of bush on the body as if bush was a masculine and rugged leader such as Putin.
Just a couple of regular Joes. Wouldn't it be something to have all the world leaders together being regular Joes
putin seems to be a good leader for his people. unfortunately he doesn't like the usa.  hope we can get a new leader that pushes as hard as putin does for his country.
hes been watching rambo movies if he thinks americans buy this garbage what happened to news this is back page trash what are they readying the pr machine before russia and china march off to be global dictators theres one king his name is jesus amen
The guy is killing the free press in Russia, murdering political rivals around the world, getting ready to declare himself a czar, and all the comments are "oh, doesn't he look rugged".  And, "gee, I wish our president could spend more time pointing at mountains".  We deserve what we get.
I agree with the "regular Joes" comment posted by someone else.. "wouldnt it be great if all the worlds leaders could get together like regular Joes?" - Wouldnt it though?  Of course it will never happen, after all, if everyone were together like regular joes, no one would have any "leverage" - "leverage" being the IN word these days.. you either have it or you don't.  Lets face it, arent we all just regular joes?  Some of us are just more important regular joes...  I for one am worried about going thru another cold war..... Russia is not the problem anymore... look further east my friends... too many people, not enough resources. It is inevitable...  now this regular joe is going home to see his regular kids and enjoy a regular weekend...
He's only 54? Well anyways I think a man has a right to show off his physique no matter who he is or where he is anywhere in the world. It's only when the woman do this out in public or in nature when it becomes a problem.
Just two weeks ago, we saw the French president Nicolas Sarkosy topless jumping into paparazzi boot.
Maybe this is the new trend for politicians.
anyway they look great !
"I think it's all propaganda to push Putin's image as strong, healthy, and youthful--which at age 54, he is young among world leaders"

Democratic candidate John Edwards is also 54 and, forgive my girlishness, way hotter. I'm not planning to vote for him (I prefer Ron Paul), but I'd consider slipping a $20 in his waistband, er, campaign fund, if I ever got to see him topless  :)
Hey John Smith in Seattle. Putin sounds a lot like our President. Only difference is Bush doesn't look rugged rather a small "cocky" type. Yes, I agree we deserve what we get.

Frederick, Jacksonville, Oregon
Putin is the anti-christ.
John I totally agree with you.  I really do not understand why the media and in turn the TV junkies of our time let themselves be guided by what looks cool.  Why wont people look at what a person does and judge them by their character not their physique.  Putin is ruthless pseudo dictator that cares more about power than anything else.  If he really cared about Russia and the well being of his people he would not do the things he has.  Freedom is the cry of every soul on this planet but some just cant seem to hear it.
Putin is flexing and sucking in his gut...who is he fooling?  Much to most people's disappointment, our President is quite the macho guy too, lifts weights and runs regularily (even in that miserable Texas heat).  Since W. is no longer popular, people don't want to recognize anything positive about the man. He's better fit than Bill Clinton and he doesn't eat McDonald's either.  In a slug fest, I would put my money on W. over Putin, unless Putin's henchmen are involved.  Watch out for that radioactive Mickey!
A well-known Russian proverb: От добра добра не ищут.
"Enough is as good as a feast."  (Think about it.)

And one more from Russian folk wisdom:
"All are not cooks that walk with long knives."

Dosvidanya, from An American who loves the Russian people, but NOT their politicians.  (Just as in the USA, and elsewhere.)
Didn't Lyndon Johnson one time change his pants during a news briefing or an advisory meeting with some of his cabinet members, while some press photographers were in the room?  Seems like I can recall the story/pictures of President Lyndon Johnson momentarily (or, pardon the pun, 'briefly') photographed with just a shirt & tie, socks, and boxer shorts on?
its cult of personality propaganda just like in the soviet times, just slicker. Why complain about civil rights when you can have an image?
I think its sad that just because a soon to be russian dictator takes his shirt off....ignorant leftys out there start bashing our president and making comparisons. its absolutely ridiculous the way the left wingers are slowly tearing this country apart!  remember what our country was founded on....morals people!  not leftist ignorance!
Can you say "Man-bra.
Putin shows great strength, Whereas, Bush shows how money hungry we can be. Personally, if it wasn't for the freedoms that the USA gives me and for my son, I would defect just so I can see how a real leader cares for his country and not just for himself and the select few he brings to his government. Bring back Clinton anyday.  He and Putin would have had a fun time... Give the man props for having the confidence to be shirtless, he is taking care of his country or at least trying...
Why is it always that anyone who can see both good and bad in the US is called "lefty" or "leftist" or "left-winger" There are a good many right leaning people with enough intelligence and free thought to understand nothing is 100% (Nor would any intelligent free thinker want it that way) And our founding fathers were all liberal thinkers, with their rights and "morals".
I believe that Putin is trying to encourage Russians to be proud again.  This, in itself, is no evil thing.  But Russia is a hard place;  there's always been one way to do things in Russia, and he's doing things the good old-fasioned way.  If he's not careful, things will get to the point where cooperation with the USA is less preferable than competition.

Ken, your post is entirely irrelevant to the topic of discussion.  Is it that hard to limit your comments to something that's at least remotely related to the topic?  When exactly, did we "go out of our way to needlessly humiliate a weakened Soviet Union and a militarily weak China?" Why is it that virulently anti-establishment types feel the need to blather on about Bush, Cheney, and the Iraq War on EVERY comment section they find?  I read an article on summer fashion and someone in the comment section attributed tasteless couture to "American imperialism."  It's ridiculous.  If you want to show off your bleeding heart, go get an account at HuffPo or DailyKos.
How sad!  How concerning! To base an opinion on a world leader by their appearances and not their policies, beliefs and actions?  Beware of wolves dressed as sheep.  Maybe the next presidential election should be a beauty pageant.  I mean, the more beautiful you are the smarter you are and the more people would listen... .
It personally saddens me that women are so easily blinded by some guy that has his shirt off, and happens to look in decent shape.  He is fueling propaganda to reinstate himself as a dictator.  Makes you really think ... apparently women are more inclined to vote for a more attractive political candidate.  Guess that means we don't have to worry about Hillary winning the presidency any time soon.  It also makes you realize that propaganda does truly work well against the weak minded.
Left Wingers are tearing this country apart.  Let's try Right Wingers who are destroying our traditions and institutions!
wonder what part of his propganda personell advised him to perform half naked maybe his black-belt instructor or perhaps "his Wife" wants to join in with this type of propganda as i wonder what the stats are on these pics are by the viewing female public. fitness for global-warming? perhaps...propganda is propganda is propganda in any era!
As a Canadian ,geographically stuck between Russia and USA ..It just struck me as  interesting, that 10 of the comments on Putins display immediately incorporated comments about Bush and other US Presidents. Why? Maybe... just Maybe... this isnt about the USA??
WHO CARES?
I'm not sure where all this Bush is a small guy talk is coming from.  I'm 6'2 220lbs and I stood toe to toe/eye to eye with the President a few years ago, and he's no small guy.  I was at his ranch in Texas as part of a Military detail and he was decked out in ripped jeans and a t-shirt lugging around a chainsaw.
Michael Justin, your typical repug hate monger. Go ahead Michael, show us how much you hate your fellow americans. It is so freakin convenient to blame all the world's problems on your fellow americans. When I read Michael's blog one word jumped out at me: NAZI. Honestly Michael who do you hate more Lefty's or terrorists. I know they are both the same to you, but honestly who do you hate more. You add no substance or facts, just typical repub smear tactics. Just like John and Joe, it is all about hating your fellow americans. That is why I call you cowards out. You are such typical chicken hawk republicans. You cluck, cluck and cluck some more that the sky is falling or lefty's are ruining the world. But you cowards cut and run when it comes to fighting for this country. All republicans can do is talk, none of these bastards would ever stand up and fight for this country. Gutless yellow bellied pigs is what I think of repubs that only attack fellow americans just so they can feel superior. You repubs do not care about america, you only care about youselves, and please do not make me serve in the military. Cowards each and every republican.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Michael,
Name one  'righty' that has  shown  he has any morals in the past 8 years. Or wait, it's ok to  have  flings on the side while ripping another man apart for the same thing.Eavesdropping , although illegal, is  high up on the moral  charts. Lying to get a war started, so that our government can  line their pockets and try  to control all of the oil reserves, that  must rate as # 1, give me a break ! As far as the picture?? Who cares, since when  does a bare chest make a man or an honest politician ?
Here's a message for all who hate Bush and think Putin is so wonderful...LEAVE THE USA..you friggin' traitors!  What blasphemy to voice this while there are real Americans DYING defending you who don't appreciate the life you have here.

It's sad that you Liberal Americans are so stupid to believe the the whole world is good and America is bad.  How the heck do you think the rest of the "good" world became that way...its because of America.

You need to wake up and grow up and get your heads out of your collective buttholes.  The World in general is a bad place, and we've done nothing but make it better.  If you disagree, thats fine, just get the heck out of my country.
I think it's funny that some people are bashing Putin over propaganda when our own political figures have always done the same. And if the Russians like it, want to elect him for ten more terms, then so be it. Call me selfish, but I'm a little more concerned with what's happening to this country.
Gee, Michael. You neo-cons have a lot of room to talk when this administration lies about WMD, Al-Qaeda in Iraq BEFORE we went there, trashing the Constitution and outing CIA agents trying to serve our country as much as possible. Sounds like your ignorance is very selective...
Gray. Why love only Russian people? Why not the Belarussian or the Ukrainian? It is a sad reality that they suffered equally during WWII, but hardly get the same media attention. And a even sadder reality as a result of people like you. They are Slavs!
micheal you need to check again.no morals is here.and remember it was founded off indians blood and blacks sweat,yu all give putin a break the man is just a man doing his best for his contry, unlike like usa president bush
Oh, yes. Mr. Putin is like everyone else as far as the chemicals which make up his (physical) body.

But, make no mistake, Mr. Putin is not like everyone else. Furthermore, no world leader is like everyone else. They feel and think different. They do not think and feel 100% different than everyone else, but the difference is astronomical!

Even the amount of the chemicals which make up Mr. Putin's body is different to most of the individual amount of chemicals making up each and everyone of the other human bodies on the earth.

Seriously, we need to get rid of this notion that we are all alike, we are all equal, etc. The fact is, believe it or reject it, laugh at it or accept it, that we are not equal. We are different, some of us are superior and some of us are subordinate, some of us are janitors while some of us are world leaders.

Stop attempting to be so damn politically correct, if not, soon that will be our down fall.
You go Michael,

Morals people; like torture,  like lying to Pat Tillman's mother, like perjury and obstruction, like covering up the "overly-friendly" emails to Congressional pages, like Vittering some hookers, like shooting your friend in the face while drunk, then hiding from the police until you've sobered up. You know, MORALS.
I think it should be of concern. When a Russian president can get a 70% approval rating and fosters good healthy image. It even seems to be natural. Our current president seems to be a "Wana Be" He walks and talks like he is trying to be "Texan". SOmetimes it seems embarrassing. He is still "our" President and we would like to have a high approval rating at home in the US. but with our economy like it is. Our health policy being compared to socialism and yet it is today exactly what Ronal Reagn warned against in his TV commercial back in the day. I guess we are looking like a bunch of American "clowns" now the world laughs at us. They laugh at our want to be cockiness. Our want to be "bravado" about our military prowness. They laugh and our soldiers are catching the brunt. We have to worry if they are getting the best. Well they are because our kremlin oh I mean our Pentagon told us so. Remember Dragon Skin? I know this discussion started with Putin but that was the carrot.
I have been to Russia 4 times during President Putin's administration have been in office. You have to understand the corruption that went on after the fall of the soviet union. Most of the business owners, the ones truly complaining about Putin and taking away freedoms were the ones that were most corrupt. It has now become safer to go to Russia under Putin's era than under that former drunk, Yeltsin.

Putin has spent most of his time cleaning up Yeltsin's mess and his relationship with the USA could not be better. Democracy has not eroded there, it is actually so much better there now than 10 years ago. All the politicians were so corrupt it made our politicians look like kids selling lemonade on the side of the street.

As far as the comparisons to our President Bush, I would honestly tell you they are neck and neck when it comes to fitness. So, god bless him is he wants to show it off at age 54 when most men want to hide their bodies. By the way, President Bush is 60 years old too.

After reading A Russian Diary by the assassinated Anna Politkovskaya I am not impressed by Putin's leadership never mind his body.  Where is the 70% approval rating coming from?  Putin?  The man is a calculating dictator.  The Russians don't care if he's sexy.  They want to live above the poverty line.  He is courting the west so they don't raise an eyebrow when he openly shares his decision that he is above their constitution and runs for a third term- unopposed.  The west will see a questionalbe sexy man in as their ruler and not say a word about human rights violations in Russia.  We truly perfer sex than news.
We have one hope....  Vote.

And while we're at it... vote Libertarian Party or Freedom Party.  If nothing else just as a protest vote.  Let those bozos in DC know we're tired of their wicked, deceiving ways.  Big Business runs the show now.  If the "lesser" parties get more votes the DC bozos will take heed, and hopefully make some policy changes.
It seems that some people see being the leader of our country as a simple job.  They have not seen nor do they want to view before and after pictures of him years into his presidency. Say what you will about Bush and nothing that I can say will change your mind but the job puts a lot of stress and strain upon the physical frame of a man.  The constant finger pointing, ,criticisms, and contending with a non-supportive left-wing congress would tell on anyone.  Worrying about the safety of his countrymen, dealing with world opinion and its leaders have made him much grayer and more wrinkled than when he was first elected.  Thank God he has the strength to still stand up to it all and not waver to the idiotic rantings and ravings of the weak Democratic-led Congress who fold up at the first sign of a crisis.  Every day they ignore the needs of the American people and have only one agenda on the books and that's break down President Bush.  What about immigration, health care for all of us, and something really beneficial and, most important of all, start earning the fat salaries they get by passing some domestic legislation instead of wasting our time and tax dollars flogging a dead horse?  Remember, they do not need our vote to give themselves a payraise.  Putin strikes a healthy figure  and you put our man down  by saying we deserve what we got.  Who, obviously, has the most hassle leading his country comparing the support he gets from it? I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.  Here, we have a choice whether to support our leader while there, a dictatorship.  From the polls, the crybabies are in the majority.  The best way to fight terrorism is to run from it or just ignore entirely is their motto.  While our leader has strived to keep us safe, most of those being kept safe seem not to support our efforts but still reap the rewards.  How long could we count on them when the chips are down?
It is good to see a vigorous barechested Putin. It reminded me of the Kennedy era when the youthful President represented a new generation of Americans.  Now I would like other world leaders, especially our Prime Minister Stephen Harper, to go topless.
Damn, that's one sexy President.   He gives Clinton a run for his money.
To Mike G.

Putin would crush Bush in a fight, who are you kidding? So what, Putin take picures and we watch our president having trouble completing a sentence...
