Thai police too macho for Hello Kitty armbands

I always found it hard to imagine Thai policemen wearing Hello Kitty armbands as a mark of shame for wayward officers.

Evidently most policemen did too, because Thailand's top cops decided Friday to abandon the idea.

It seems there was a rebellion in the macho ranks, as well as outrage on Hello Kitty Web sites.

A police officer in Bangkok showed off the Hello Kitty armband that was going to be a used as a disciplinary measure on Monday. The police have since abandoned the idea.

"You have to understand that it's embarrassing for our 30- to 40-year-old policemen to be made to wear this girly, pink armband," conceded police Maj. Weeraprach Wongrat, of the Crime Suppression Division, whose idea it was in the first place.

"It also attracted so much attention – a lot of praise, but a lot of criticism," he said Friday. The Thai police found themselves blasted by Hello Kitty lovers for using their cute icon as a means of punishment.

"We are concerned about the image of police as much as that of Hello Kitty," Weeraprach said. "We decided to drop the plan."

He said they would be looking at other designs.

That plan had been to order offending policemen – and most police officers here are men – to wear a pink armband with a Hello Kitty face and a pair of linked hearts as a disciplinary measure – if the officer was late to work, parks in the wrong place or left his desk while on duty.

"It was meant to be a moral armband for our police," said Weeraprach, "to teach them not to overlook minor mistakes. The armband reminded them that they were being watched." A mark of humiliation, in other words.

But now it is Weeraprach who is a little humiliated.

The Crime Suppression Division has a new commander, Weeraprach's boss, who trained with the American Secret Service and the Canadian police, and who has pledged to modernize a force that has been accused of widespread corruption and extrajudicial killings.

The new commander is said to be a believer in behavioral science and in the "broken window theory," according to which small changes can have large effects. He saw pink armbands as a start. Now it's back to the drawing board.

I am nearly 37 years old, and am not ashamed to say, "I love Hello Kitty!"  It's a throwback to my childhood.  (Of course, I am also neither a man, nor a police officer!)  So, now that this form of "punishment" has been abandoned, the Thai police force must have a surplus of said armbands....  How can I get one?  LOL
Dear Ian, I do wonder what the Thai police force will do with the surplus of Hello Kitty armbands. It does seem like a silly punishment to make the officers wear these on their uniforms. But for all those people who are fans of Hello Kitty maybe you could send the supply of armbands to them. Laurel already asked if she could have one. They will be well loved. Peace to all!
Rather than make kitty seem like the bad guy, portray kitty as the force that will turn the lives of these wayward cops around.
Laurel,

Keep hecking on ebay... bet they'll show up.
I think the U.S. Armed Forces should remove the American flags from all uniforms and replace it with the logos of the corporations who  profit from wars (that they started) in Iraq and elsewhere.
everything is just a moment in time so just be in that moment and know this two passes away and comes again it could be a fashion statement for some and others very painful moments in their life a book found on Lulu . com called www.god here.com helps alot pt take away some confusion
This is the first that I have heard of this, and I am in Thailand. I have been here for nearly 4 years. I will have to ask around. Also Laurel if I should find any extra armbands I will let you know.

I am a former American police officer who is married to a Female Thai police officer and we live in Bangkok. I have many times spoke to her about the conduct or actions of Thai policemen. I can not believe some of the stuff these guys get away with. I have seen policmen do nothing as someone was being assulted, insert an athoritative position over non-Thai's to extortion - which I was personally approached. If it wasn't for my wife being in the car and showing her police ID, there is no telling how much money I would have had to pay for a speeding charge which was false in the first place. Law Enforcement is a discipline that not every man/women is cut out to take on. However, it is a position in every society that is very much needed. I think that if the Thai police were paid better (so they wouldn't have to extort to SUPPORT their families)and made to take in service training courses on a frequent basis, we all might see the Thai police do a 360 degree turn for the better. I wish the Great Kingdom of Thailand's Police Force all the best in the future.
I hope the Thai's read this....it's called "FIRE THE OFFENDER"  If it's not that serious, suspend them for a week without pay. Hello Kitty arm band's, they should fire the guy that came up with that, how stupid can ya get.
I will love to get two Thai "Hello Kitty" arm bands.  If anyone hears of a way to acquire them, please let me know.  Thank you.
Since Hello Kitty has no mouth and cannot talk she might have been a good choice for a corrupt police dept. .....  Just kidding. :)  She is much too cute and way too sweet to be used in such a fashion.  I'm looking for the arm band too Laurel!
all cops are corrupt and self serving. they spend their lives humiliating others. I think they need to be humbled and taught that they serve the people, who pay their wages. The Hello Kitty was a great idea. Too bad they whined and cried like the losers they are. Sounds like typical cop to me. Without the badge and gun, they are sissy boys.
Why not donate the unused HK items to the many poorer children, orphans and pediatric patients in Thailand?
Kevin, I hope the police do not do a "360 degree turn" because that would put them in the same place they are already. They need to do a 180 degree turn.
Also desperately seeking armband XD  Wearing one would be a suitable punishment for my boyfriend, but not for police officers.  What's so bad about HK?
RE: above comment "I think the U.S. Armed Forces should remove the American flags from all uniforms and replace it with the logos of the corporations who  profit from wars (that they started) in Iraq and elsewhere."
Sure, 'the corporations' started the wars right after they secretly placed tons of explosives in the WTC and then to divert suspicion from themselves they had two jet airliners fly into the buildings.
Are you liberal morons ever going to get sick of hearing yourselves talk?  If you hate America, there are opening in the Thai Police Dept.
Way to go steve!!  I am sick of hearing Americans trash this country.  If you don't appreciate the freedoms that we have here, try another country!

Nobody seems concerned with the sexist idiocy promoted by this sort of "punishment"?
Hey Steve, that guy is giving liberals a bad name!!!  That guy was just a plain ol' moron.  Hell, I work for a corporation and it pays the bills for me and my family.  Long live corporations!!!  Down with embiciles!!!
My daughter and I are huge Hello Kitty fans and would love an armband too. Hoping we can find one.
OOH ! I want one. Everyone knows I've been very bad.
The armbands are just another version of the DUI license plates we use here in Ohio. The problem is that with the armbands, the Force would be displaying their errs to the people over whom they are supposed to be enforcing the law, and if there is a better way to encourage insolence to the police, I'd like to hear it. The humiliation tactic, while excellent in theory, is simlpe unfeasable when used in a position of authority, not because of it's impact (which would only increase) but because of the kickback -- which is unfortunate.

A better solution would be the institution of rewards (pay raises?) to the officers that perform their jobs sans corruption and without error. As for the armbands, the police should either sell them in order to raise money for themselves or for a charity (which, I admit, is les likely), or the armbands should be donated.

Best of luck to the Kingdom of Thailand in matters of their police force.
hahaha that would be cool :)
Hey Kevin from Bangkok.  I agree with Bill from Toledo.  They need a 180-degree turn.  That's an about face from your present direction.  However, Dude you are right.  The degrees of a compass rose insn't what matters here.  We are talking about fairness, humanity and reform. Thank you for the enlightenment directly from Bangkok.  (Some of us just can't help being Pilots, Eagle Scouts or mathematicians).  Wonder if Bill is related to Klinger? We bid you and your wife the best.
BLUE SKIES, CAVU/ Georgia USA
ROCKY ANN would just LOVE to have a HK armband!!
Please send at least 3 to me!!
"all cops are corrupt and self serving. they spend their lives humiliating others...Without the badge and gun, they are sissy boys"
wait till you need one, then you'll appreciate that they have guns and badges. there are MANY citizen serving cops in the world. not every cop is corrupt. don't colour the picture all in one brushstroke! they don't get paid enough for what they do. and justin timberlake and tom cruise get millions for just entertaining, something that used to be 2nd class citizenry. we're paying the wrong scales to the wrong people. the millions should go to cops, firemen, and teachers, not preadolescent brats that stuff it up their nose or drink it down "oh the pressure!" they should try protecting kids and elders from crack addics, muggers and rapers and see how well they do under REAL pressure.
Now I have no incentive to join Thai police force.  I will love to have few of the armband.  It is not the armband who lower your image.  It was the action.
Edward Joseph Doran :
If corporations did not produce the equipment used in war WHERE WOULD IT COME FROM ???? IF THE GOVERNMENT OWNED PLANTS TO MAKE IT WE WOULD BE A COMMUNIST COUNTRY. WHICH DO YOU PREFER.
I love the comment Steve Kelley made to the liberal jerk. I can't tell you how proud I am of all our troops, and public servants, who protect us, so that we can enjoy our freedoms! I thank each and everyone, and their familys for being their support.
As far as the HK armbands, why dont they just where a scarlet S or something, why make it so outragous as poor little Hello Kitty.
HK armbands in the name of police discipline?  You have to see the humor in that... Can I be a bad cop too! If it happened here I'm sure there would be a lawsuit.  As to the conservative retort to the 'liberal' corporation reference, take the Bush '04 bumper sticker off your rear end, it's obscuring your vision. ven Rove is running...
To the person who wants them to donate the armbands to kids... I don't think an adult-sized armband is a very fun toy, even if it does have HK on it.  Makes more sense to feed off of adult weirdos and the hype of this story by auctioning the armbands to the (apparently) numerous adults who want one, and using the proceeds to buy something the kids can actually use.
I think these Thai Police Officers look hot with their pink Hello Kitty armbands!!  I bet Chrissy Whitesocks agrees with me!! If I were one of their wives, I'd make sure they were late everyday so they got to wear one!!
That is just pitty!!!!
I agree w/ Steve and Tammy stop your whining ! If you
think for one moment that we have seen the last of these terrorist you are sadly mistaken. The sad part is that a wonderful mostly peace loving group of people who adher to a specific religion are being blamed for a few.

Also just an observation about Joe American sounds like sour grapes...ever been arrested? I know I know
you was framed ??? LMAO

What does your comment have to do with the original news story?

Here's an idea...  Let's take every politically minded moron, who uses non-war related news stories as platforms to voice their rhetoric, and ship their asses to Thialand.

What ever happened to disciplinary write ups... ? no, these  third world police groups'' with their draconian laws anyways, waste time with unnecessary  crap like this when they could be  cleaning up the disease infested, drug infested areas of that  savage country.they will never be as  professional, efficient, or  orderly as the law enforcement professionals of the U.S. with our codes of conduct and standards. it is wrong to even call them 'police'' when all they are   is glorified security /paramilitary faschists. they are an embarrassment to all law-enforcement world wide.
I think it's clever as hell.  The attitude of 'just fire the offenders' is well-meant, but won't work if the new guys are are assimilated right into the culture of corruption.  I've blogged about how this is an example of a scalable reputation system:

Hello Bill from Toledo and Neil from Lafayette. Thank you for pointing out to me that my compass reading was malfuctioning. I think I made my point, which is that in order to stop wrong doings by policemen, then we should pay them more and offer or mandate training that would better educate them in society. Believe me, I wore that badge for many years and it's a hard thing to do at times. Not only are you worried that the night goes by without anyone getting hurt; one is always thinking about their families and how they are going to pay the morgage next month. Please, I am not making excuses because I, as did all other policemen, made the choice to serve our communities in that capisity. As far as Thai policemen, if you only knew what the guys were making a month, you would probably not see them as bad people for doing some of the things that they do just to pocket a few extra dollars (baht). Anyway, thanks for pointing out my 360 comment because you guys are absolutly right - they would be right back where they started.
Whoever came up with the hello kitty armband is a hello kitty fanatic.
There are were only 10 armbands made so good luck getting your hands on them.
I would think that it would show these police men as soft. Sending the wrong message. What even happened to sent home without pay?
they should make them wear pink hello kitty uniforms for the day
Oh yeh! how about the Thai immigration officers at the bridge crossing to Laos. I went to visit Laos in last October of 2006 and I handed my passport and the Immigration form but somehow I left one spot blank. When he look at it once and pushed it back to me without saying anything so I though he was done so I took it back and he started yelling at me. I responded back with a question in Thai but he answered me back in English because he saw my passport was from America. Not knowing what was wrong, I calmly asked him back in English as what was wrong? and he just simply yelled "FILL IT" Oh! my god! I have never seen any government official being so mean like that in my life. Talk about being corrupted I saw some other people handed him a $5 bill and he was quietly and quickly stamp approved. I think all Thai police expected people to supposed to just bribe them every time.
