Iran's spying squirrels?

You can tell that Iran is feeling a little beleaguered these days when there are reports that Tehran may be under attack from rodents!

That is what the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported this week, that police had, ahem, "arrested" 14 squirrels on charges of espionage.

The rodents were found near the Iranian border, allegedly equipped with eavesdropping devices, according to IRNA.

When asked to confirm the story, Esmaeel Ahmadi Moghadam, the national police chief, said, "I have heard about it, but I do not have precise information." He declined to give any more details.

IRNA said that the squirrels were discovered by intelligence services – but were captured by police officers several weeks ago.

'Are you serious?'
The reaction to the report on Tehran’s streets was varied – from disbelief to assigning guilt for the alleged infraction.

"No, I had not heard about this, but it does not surprise me, foreign countries are always meddling in Iran," said Hassan Mohmmadi, a fast-food vendor.

Mohammadi asked me if I knew where the squirrels were from, and I told him that I didn’t know. Then he came to his own conclusions. "I bet they were British squirrels, they are the most cunning," he replied.

Meantime, an independent journalist, Sepher Sopli, was not surprised by the idea that another country would spy on Iran, so much as he was dumbfounded by their methods.

"I read this story in the papers and though it was very bizarre; what struck me as odd was that in this age of modern technology, people were relying on squirrels to do their spying," Sopli said.

But, the report was still strange enough to surprise. "That's very funny, but you’re not serious are you?" said Soraya Jafari, a student in Tehran.

Maybe not a first
Espionage not entirely foreign to animals. If true, this would not be the first time animals have been used for military endeavors.

During World War II, Allied forces used pigeons to fly vital intelligence out of occupied France.

More recently, U.S. Marines stationed in Kuwait trained chickens for a low-tech chemical detection system. It’s also well documented that dolphins have been used to seek out underwater mines.

VIDEO: Were Iranian captives forced to confess?
Spying is something that is taken seriously in any country, especially in a place like Iran, where numerous people are currently being held on charges of espionage.

Still, the squirrels that breached the Iranian border carrying sensitive spying equipment must have been nuts.

squirrels know where to find all the nuts in Iran.
You know you're a dictator when...
You start arresting innocent animals for crimes against the state!
Are the Squirrels African or European? They didn't have a couple of coconuts with them?
Proof that the WHOLE WORLD has gone MAD!!!!!!!! HA!
This should make for very funny comics, I will be watching for them!!
Seriously? This is some of the funniest chit I have read all day long. Spying Squirrels???? Comeon, what are they going to spy on, how many nuts they have stored for the winter?

WATCH OUT FOR THE SPYING RODENTS IN A NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR YOU!
Those silly British, they should have used naked mole rats instead.  Everyone knows that naked mole rats are far superior to squirrels when it comes to spying on middle-eastern countries.  Now had it been a South American country, that would be a totally different situation.
Hey, if these squirrels are camera equipped, maybe George Bush could use one for his colonoscopy!!?
Squirrels spying on skunks who call others pigs and monkeys.

Welcome to Animal Farm, 2007
This is to damned funny to be serious.  Little doe-eyed nut-eating squirrels with surveillance equipment...now THAT'S radical! LOL
As Natasha and I have always said, all problems caused by Moose and Squirrel. B. Badanov
It seems pretty nutty to me but look at the nut that is running that country,
exactly who were The squirrels spying on? who is nuts enough To hang out around The Iranian border? wait Till They find all of our cats That are strategically located in downtown Tehran. That will be a surprise. This is Too funny if it is True. maybe They were watching The movie with The rat chef over The weekend. dont squirrels hibernate in The winter?
Can we perhaps hire the Iranians to patrol our southern border? They obviously have the means to not only detect but to capture 14 squirrels crossing their border while we cannot stop thousands of immigrants from crossing ours. I do believe we can learn something from them!
is this what we've come to? using secret squirrels? Wasn't that a cartoon ?? The squirrel and the morrocan mole ? wow.
hehehe
Sounds a little squirrely to me. I say it's nuts.
Were they trained by Secret Squirrel?
I have one word for this - paranoid!  This can only be good news as it gives evidence to the fact that the world opinion is catching up with Pinnochio!  Just drop the bomb and make glass already.
I love those rodents.
I love those rodents.
Anything is possible these days but so is questionable nature of it. But why is always the west that first comes to mind when spying allegations are made?
There is obviously a world wide conspiracy by rodents to overthrow the human world.  In many places in the world, rodents outnumber humans by three or four to one. Even higher in undeveloped countries. now, if squirrels can form a pact with other rodents, especially rats, then the results can be devastating.  Even more interesting, if rodents have developed technology to spy on humans, we could be in grave danger in the future.  So humans beware!  You thought all you had to worry about were other humans.
When will Western Government figure out how to get badgers to shoot laser guidance beams at military targets.
That is brillant! Nuts up to the guys that thought of that one!
How many years did the squirrels get? Should we get Jimmy Carter to launch a recovery mission to get the squirrels out?? Should Nancy P go to Iran and plead for thier release???
Will someone please make sure no harm comes to the spying squirrels. I've heard they are trained not to succumb under questioning. That may not bode well for them in Iran.
Thats just Nuts!
You have to be kidding. People actually take this stuff seriously? Only in the 3rd world would the citizen be gullible enough think that any percieved "enemy" would care enough about whats going on in a piddly little sand trap like Iran of all places to use a squirl to "spy" and steal all the valuable information that their government has. On second thought, it wasnt to long ago I was told about a secret plot by the U.N. to invade the U.S.A. and spying with black heli-copters. I guess people are not to bright even when they dont live in the 12th century societies of the mid-east!
Will the Squirrels get pardon?
Umm, wow this is strange but funny
And I thought the helicopters that follow me around was bad. Now I have to watch out for squirrels.
Thanks Darin.... for making my cup of tea come through my nose!
And I thought the helicopters that follow me around was bad. Now I have to watch out for squirrels.
I laughed so hard reading this...I did not know British squirrels were more cunning then those of other national origins...guess you learn something new every day:)
hahahahahah.....i love it!!!!!!!!!
Don't fret Rocky, I'm on my way. Bullwinkle
If they sentence the squirrels to prison time, they should note that a rodent's life span is much shorter than ours
Maybe this explains things! I swear I have a squirrel trying its best to get in my front door. The thing was on my porch two days ago when I opened the door it ran toward me and I stomped at it and it ran out to the yard. Crazy squirrels are almost tame. Maybe they are spying on me? My friends say I'm nuts so maybe thats why they are trying to get in! HA-HA-HE-HE!
What's next, tuxedos and miniature Aston Martins?
They probably heard about the gigantic nut that runs the country.
I have said to people i know for a while now, Squirrels are slowly going to take over the world!!!! now i have more proof :D
Because the lady squirrels were not wearing Burkas, there is speculation that these must be foreign squirrels.  On the other hand, they have reportedly been seen within Iran for a long time and my sources tell me that these squirrel spies may actually be moles that had been planted within the squirrel population.
I can't wait until I see who the translator will be when they air the squirrels confessing to espionage on Iranian TV.
be careful what you type...they are probably monitoring this story...
haha, "that must have been nuts". That is an awesome closing line. Animal spying is easy, scientists can easily modify one of those dog tracking chips into some kind of a sound recording chip or something like that. That'd be cool!
Cheap spy labor. I Love it!!
..great,now that they've found out about the spying squirrels we'll never know if the the squad of attack-goats would be effective..
I see the squirrel overlords have been expanding their territory! But their moose partners are still on the loose.
Maybe these squirrels know where to find the Weapons of Mass Destruction? We could trade them cahews for counter-intelligence info? Nutters!!!
