Changing of the guard at Number 10 Downing

There’s a whiff of something special in Downing Street this week.

Could it be the smell of freshly-cooked apple pie coming from the kitchen of Number 11?

Perhaps a good and kind neighbor is busy baking a little farewell gift for the occupier of the more famous address next door: Number 10.

Prime Minister Tony Blair is – after 10 long years – giving up the most sought-after address in British politics and heading out the door.

VIDEO: Britain's next Prime Minister

And no one has sought after this address more than Blair’s neighbor, friend – and rival –Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and fellow resident of Downing Street.

At last, the most photographed door in Britain is letting Blair out – and Brown in.

A long, tangled relationship
Theirs has been a long partnership, based originally on friendship and shared values, but characterized more recently by the stresses and strains of one man holding onto the job longer than the other could bear.

Years ago, according to political legend, Brown agreed to step back to let Blair reach unchallenged for the Prime Minister’s seal of office. But the deal was that Blair would pass it on – in good time.

The battle for succession has gone on largely out of sight – fought by "aides" briefing and counter-briefing the political media off-camera. But no one could fail to see the growing tension between these two powerful men.

Now Blair – charismatic, charming, a great speechifyer – is handing over to Brown – a solid, serious, some say rather dour Scotsman, not given to making many jokes.

But many in the U.K. – Labour Party supporters as well as its detractors – are ready for the change.

Blair still has a following, but his charm – like his hair – has worn thinner over the years.

Iraq has left a stain. Few doubt it’s the right time for him to go, Blair amongst them, and to offer his undoubted political talents in another cause.

Latest opinion polls appear to show the public already shifting some support back towards the Labour government. The honeymoon has begun.

And, at last, our serious, solid and persistent Prime Minister Brown may find himself at the right time, and in the right place, at Number 10.

Weather it be the right person leaving and the wrong person coming in, or the wrong person leaving and the right person coming in, it's still the same mess.
Real friends stand by you thru tkick and thin!!!  too the american people, Tony Blair is that friend.  regardless that he followed pres bushs multiple "bad" decisions, he still took a lot of heat to stand against terrorism and the 9/11 attack and see it for what it was, a cowardly act against a good and decent people. Mr Blair, as an american citizen, you have a place at my dinner table anytime. good luck to you Sir!!!
Dear Chris, I viewed the video of Prime Minister Gordon Brown and was somewhat surprised at the kind of Prime Minister he will be. I do agree with him that there needs to be a quicker withdrawal of the troops from Iraq and I hope it comes soon. Hearing that he likes to have alot of meetings seems to me he will analyze many of the situations on subjects before actually making any decision. That can be good or bad depending on the subject and how dire it can be. It will be interesting to see how the people of Britain and the world comes to know him and how they react. All I can say is that I hope he works well with President Bush and with the next President of the United States whoever that may be. Time will tell. Anyway,Peace to all!
The very first thing the new PM should do is put Blair on the Lords' List, with title at least equal to Thatcher. This will help him enormously in his new role in the Mideast. The UK is not one of the four, except through the EU, and by granting Blair a title, the UK gov't will have effectively given its stamp of approval on his new responsibilities. For the first time one can actually risk some hope that there will be peace in the Jordan Valley and the prospect that strong, democratic institutions will take hold in Palestine.
Tony Blair has b een a unique and rare leader. He has earned his place in history.
Blair becoming any kind of a so-called peace envoy of his partner in high-crimes (bush) is laughably tweo-faced if not the sleaziest attempt to cloak his own obvious criminality in the well-documented bush-led conspiracy of known high-treasonous lies leading to the needless war with Iraq.  Blair belongs in prison, along with bush, cheney, rumsfeld, wolfowtiz, bolton, rice, rove, andmany many more of this PNAC zionist-leaning bunch of big-oil criminals.
I am sorry to see Tony Blair go, He is such a huge supporter of the US. PM Blair went out on a limb for us when we needed it the most, and I have great admiration for him for that. He always understood how the U.S. was there for the UK in the past, present and will be in the future. Hopefully Brown will be the same. Farewell Tony Blair and thank you for all you have done to help us and the rest of the world.
Tony Blair being the Mideast Envoy would be the perfect job for him.  I'll wager that he would give anything to undo the damage that has been done by his partnering with Mr. Bush in Iraq.  It's a way for him to make up for that.  He's a good man - I wish him great luck in this role.
I think it is much better that Tony Blair is going. He has made many wrong move for his country by taking side of Bush.

However, Blair is a wrong number apponted as Middle-East Peace envoy. I don't have any faith in Tony Blair, because he is anti Muslims and pro Israelis. He is tend to to work for Israelis only.He will just go to Middle-East and talk only without any result.

Our former President Bill Clinton is the right choice for Middle-East Peace envoy, he will bring the result.
tony blair is a courageous man, and, in an age when America has a lot of "wink-wink" friends (like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan...France...etc.), he is heroic in his friendship.  i don't even think i would like his national policies if i lived in england - with all the handouts and union backing as i understand it - but since i only am affected by his international policy, i can't think of someone i respect more in this world.
We will soon know just how much Mr. Bush screwed up our relationship with England.
Blair was a good leader, standing for what he viewed was correct, and showing the world that the British were not afraid to stand up for a cause. However, Gordon Brown is a number cruncher which leaves some of us feeling that the British might be led by fear rather than courage.
I am looking forward to the day when George Bush and Laura walk out of the White House and a new occupant walks in.  Whoever wins our future presidential election will certainly inherit a mess and personally I don't know why anyone would even want the job, but thank goodness there are those out there that do.  The next incoming president should appoint George Bush as U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and give he and Laura a residence right in the middle of Baghdad.  With Tony Blair meddling in Middle East affairs after his retirement he will certainly continue to stir up a mess in that part of the world.  His intentions may be good, but he should just go write a book or something and leave the Middle East alone.  It is obvious his affects on that part of the world have been as destructive as our own president's involvement.
Tony Blair is my current idol. Dashing,handsome,level-headed and intelligent. I will miss him dearly leading the country I love so. Thanks for removing the cloud of Thatcherisum and for boldly standing wih America in its time of need. I'm so sorry our president (whom I did not vote for) was your downfall. You didn't deserve that Mr. Blair. But I know you will continue to serve the public in he best way you can. My prayers and good thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Carry on Tony!
Good riddance to a greedy bum who conspired with Bush and company to lie to his people about the justifications for war.

I'm just glad that nobody I know is dead or multilated because a drunken coke-head convinced a gap-toothed fop to invade a country that never attacked them.

History will describe this period in English and American history as a dark one, where willfully ignorant simpletons allowed a liar and war-monger to involve their country in a needless and honorless war.

The cherry on this sundae of suck is that both Bush and Blair are treating their returning soldier deplorably.  It's especially bad for Bush who tries to conflate "supporting the misguided war in Iraq" with "supporting the soldiers", even though he had and still has no plan to fix things...and HE was the guy who put them in harms way!

Amazing.

Did some hick just say that 'analyzing situations' is bad sometimes?  No wonder there are no Americans in my graduate engineering classes!  They're all embracing idiocy.  I fear for the future of my nation.
Thanks, Tony.  You're welcome at my house anytime.
"The evil men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with thir bones"....Hail Caesar!

In a time when the free world truly needed a great spokesman, you were there, head and shoulders above the rest. When much of the world only gave lip service of support, you and the great British people showed you true colors. As an Irish American I must also thank you for bring peace to Ireland.  Thank you so much Sir.  To all the freedom haters who only know how to speak of the hate that they are consumed with, I give you a purple finger salute.
Tony Blair, the Mid-East envoy. Is that meant to be some kind of a sick joke? He wouldn't know the truth if it walked up to him and punched him in the nose. He is a toadeater. I say go find a home among the swamps where you belong.
Dear Mr. Blair,
Thanks for great leadership.  Thanks for being there with president Bush after 9/11 for USA and the world against the evil terrorists.  Best wishes to you and your family.
Dear Mr. Blair,

Tony Blair ended his reign the day he decided to back Bush.  So it comes to no surprise that not only do other industrial civilizations either do not agree with Bush, and think Bush is a total imbecil. That anyone that stands with Bush against the 'Axis of Evil', will be castrated by the country they reign over.
When a president holsters his six-shooters ready to draw on those dang villians, it isn't any wonder at all that there are going to be casualties on both sides.
