Is reporting in Iraq still possible?

Baghdad's dwindling press corps learned today that two of our own were brutally murdered, apparently for doing nothing more than their jobs.

ABC News announced that its Baghdad-based cameraman Alaa Uldeen Aziz, 33, and soundman Saif Laith Yousuf, 26, were ambushed yesterday while driving home in western Baghdad. Their bodies were discovered today.  Iraqi police told us they'd apparently been tortured before they were killed, and then shot in the head execution style.

I was always impressed with Alaa. He was smart, well connected and savvy. I liked him so much I tried to hire him for NBC News about a year ago, but he didn't want to come. He liked his job at ABC. They respected him, he told me, and felt he was a critical part of their Baghdad-based newsgathering team.

But why kill Alaa and his soundman Saif? Why have insurgents in Iraq murdered 102 journalists and kidnapped 48 since 2003, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, making Iraq the deadliest conflict ever to cover?

Technology has changed role of reporters
It used to be that militant groups appreciated reporters and wanted to use us to tell their stories.  They wanted to talk to the press to counter the statements of whatever government or political faction they were fighting.  Now from Gaza to Afghanistan, journalists are considered legitimate targets.

I have a theory that technology is in part to blame. Once militant groups started posting their statements and videos on the Internet, they no longer needed us. Today all they need is a DV camera and an Internet connection to assure that their message will be posted as they intended, and not filtered through a reporter.

I get it. Why risk meeting a journalist you think is probably a spy anyway, if you can get your message out on your own? But in Iraq, insurgents are hunting down and killing us. In Baghdad, life seems to truly mean nothing. This ancient country, one of the earliest civilizations on the planet, seems to have lost any grip on humanity and rationality.

Last week the neighbor of one of our engineers in Baghdad was killed. He was a Shiite living in a Sunni neighborhood in western Baghdad. But he wasn't just murdered for living in what is now "the wrong" neighborhood. Holes were drilled into his chest. His ears and penis were cut off.

"He was just an old man," one of our staff told me.

For several years, Iraqi reporters have been telling us stories like this one from neighborhoods in Baghdad where Western reporters wouldn't stand a chance of surviving. Most foreign journalists in Baghdad still go out reporting everyday, but many now travel with security teams befitting the head of a small third world country.

Local reporters - our eyes and ears
Our Iraqi reporters go out alone. Most prefer it that way, assuming that as locals they can operate under the insurgents' radar. Many of our reporters have moved into our bureaus, basically living at the office. Others want to stay outside to be closer to their families. Outside, they lie about what they do, telling neighbors they are unemployed or drive taxis. Deception is their protection.

Our local reporters, translators and cameramen are not just our friends and colleagues; they are our eyes and ears. Without them, the world would have no idea what happens in so many Baghdad neighborhoods today in the grips of warring Shiite and Sunni militias.

Most Iraqi journalists do it because they believe the world should know what is happening in their country. But after four years in Iraq, nearly all of the local reporters I know want to leave the country. It's not surprising why, but it would be a tremendous loss. If Iraqis cannot report in Baghdad, Westerners don't stand a chance.

The media has no place in iraq. Ya it's sad when a reporter is killed, but why is he there? They are'nt soldiers and wouldn't have the gall to shoot anyone if they had to. Stop sending them it's not like its impossible to get the news without risking lives. Besides the majority of the public doesn't seem to care anymore. This war started on good terms, it's turning into another vietnam slowly. Do everybody a favor stay out and let the soldiers do their jobs, lord knows they're the only ones still ready to.
I travel the world in my bussnes. Our president and his greedy buddies has made me embarresed to show my U.S passport. I feel the whole world is starting to think our country is full of idiots.
I am one that has been saying for years that this war and even 9/11 has not had the truth come out...Someone earlier said , there should be no media reports of fighting ... isn't that what happened during WWII..the truth didn't come out till after the war.. While still in school, one of our Teachers said,"there will be wars ever 20-30 years, not for any other reason than the rich mfgers of war machines, etc. need to replenish their bank acc'ts." I read books about the gorila Afgans for years crossing over to the Russian side and slaying boarder soldiers daily (such as what they did to the 3 media persons) and when the Russians tried to fight back, the USA supplied the Afgans with training and out-dated arms....It has been written in the news of Iraq's President being a friend of the USA at one time, doing their bidding (fighting the Iranians)making deals with HH, and then breaking them in early 1990's (the first Bush in power trying to hold on to his son's oil fields) That warnings were sent and that 9/11 could and should have been stopped...that 9/11 may have been set up (as explained in an e-mail sent around)..We are sending our sons, brothers, fathers to fight for a President that lied, and still lies....missinforms everyone. The money that has been spent on this war across the ocean, could have gone to help their own people , to protect their own country 3 x's over...But then the ones that are making a financial killing would be out $ (Arms, planes, parts, boats, oil/gas increases, mfger of all kinds...)You wonder why they hate us??? Your President said:"because we are free"?? Either he thinks we were all born in a cabbage patch in the hills or that we are all deaf , blind and stupid...I wonder how many wars we would have if those in Government had to send their children first?????
A lot of you are people whom have never been to Iraq, personally I have as a soldier. And in my experience, I would ask that you not be so quick to judge how our media is one sided and spreading hate campaigns. The media in general gives all the wrong info. to people here in the states, and shouldn't really even be allowed to be over there. For their own safety and for others. All people in Iraq are targets, soldiers, IP's, Iraqi soldiers, reporters and crewmen, women and children, foreigners, civilians, politicians. Absolutely anyone. There are 2 different sects that perform different ritual torture killings, all for radical religous beliefs, and I can back the radical part up. I can not go into detail past that. Everyone there is a target. Ole from honolulu, you need to calm down. A lot more than digging for oil is at stake here. Oil had nothing to do with al-quaida destroying the world trade center nor Saddam torturing his people. The people there are in need of our help, while your mind gets twisted by things you may see and hear in media and from friends or some other sources, there is a need for our troops there, there are real people there with real needs. Look if any of you have serious questions about the war,Iraq, islamic beleifs, whatever I have a lot of personal experience and knowledge I would be willing to share. write me at sham-man2k33@hotmail.com And, kristn of seattle, american soldiers are confined now by many rules and regulations, which barely allow them to shoot at anyone without serious reason and has to be officially documented after the incident. More Iraqi sects and radical groups are killing other Iraqi's far more than U.S. troops in the last 2 years of this conflict, and it's all for fear and power. We are not commiting genocide nor are the troops baby killers or murderers.
Hello every one, I am in Afghanistan & i know what’s going on in Afghanistan & some how about IRAQ. TALIBAN & AL-Qaeda are not Muslims They flight for money. So i think NATO & ISAF are doing the best in Afghanistan but i cant say anything about IRAQ. & if we want to finish terrorism we should help & support NATO & ISAF. We are already burning in terrorism & if westerns, Europeans & Americans do not fight against terror one day they will have the same problem that we are having in Afghanistan.
See from a history point of view whatever civilized a nation is, when this nation sends troops to a defferent nation with different religion there is only badness happening to both of them. do u want the result of americans in Iraq? yes a it is a second Vietnaam unfortunately!
Saddam was a brutal SOB but he was the only thing holding down this sort of thing. They just couldn't wait to start killing each other. Where are all the good Muslims? I know you're out there somewhere! This is what happens when you think it's OK to teach your kids hatred like you teach them simple math eventually they'll get good at it. God Bless The USA, but we are slowly heading down the same road!
The persons you cited chose to do what they did, as do you and all other reporters, so what is the bitch? My empathy and sympathy go out to the women and childern who are murdered by these so called insurgents. They are not insurgents they are murderous muslim thugs justifying their villanous ways just like muhammed did when he dreamt up the so called allah.
upon what i have read about killing the journalists and the comments that have been written i found that most of the commentators were against the war but i think we still lack the real stamina to stand against this bloody war,i think we need some collective globalized action to express our resentment of this war which has killed hundreds of thousands so far with out any notification that there will be an end for this. i think people here in the middle east where i live hate your administration because of injustice that has been applied so far in dealing with our key issues, such as palestine issue the magic word to solve or change this hatred Dilemma which widely spreaded among the middle easterns lies on "JUSTICE" nothing more and nothing less
How does a story about two journalists being killed become a debate on the war. As I read the comments I can't help to see why this war has divided not only this country but the whole world. People there is plenty of blame to go around, can we stop talking about who's fault it is and talk about what can be done about it. Take the same time you took to write you hate filled coments and write your Gov. Rep. and inform them you vote and your opinion counts. People in spite of what you beleive about the war we elected these people so maybe some of the blame is ours.
my son is a Marine. he, as alot of people, believe that they are fighting so that these people (religious or not or what ever) should have the right to work, shop or even just take a walk through the park, with out the fear of being killed. Do you fear going to work every day, that you will be murdered for it. you should not, and neither should these peoples, (including our brothers and sisters in the media no matter where they come from). I am not a very religious person, but I do have beliefs and those are just that I should be able to do all of these things with out fear of death (from governement or religious orginizations) weather I feel the same way as the man next door or not. here we have the oppurtunity to be catholic living next door to baptist, next door to athiest, and yet we still can go to work with out harm. we can still walk down to the park and our children can still play together. we have that choice. we have some of our own problems and we are working those out, but we are not killing those that are different, and we do not kill those who offend of us. we try to settle it calmly first. then we use our courts, when we cannot come to a good solution amongst ourselves. and if justice is fair then it gets handled in the best for every one posible way. that is why my son is there, not because of bush or oil or politics. just plain old freedoms that we abuse every day here in america, the ones that many countries do not have. like the right to work in any environment with out fear of death. Do I think it safe for the reporters overseas,no, but then again I do not think it is safe for anyone with a different oppinion or culture and yes I would flee to america too. anywhere that I could feel my family would be safe to do the basic functions of life, like shopping at the local store. I wish you a safe return to your home, and a safe home to return to.
Are you so blind that you can't see you have answered your own question. You stated how factions would openly want to tell their story to the world and rightfully so. Unfortunately it isn't being told and what is told are not the views of Iraqi people but of our administration bent on censuring every bit of truth at home and abroad for the crimes inflicted on humanity and the enviroment. Why are'nt you reporting on why it is that only 1 in 8 Iraqi children will live to see their 5th birthday or why is our national guard over there? What happened to our military? Not since Hitler has the world been so deceived
Richard, I've been watching you since you first began covering Baghdad, when you were the only American Journalist who stayed there. It's time for you to leave. Go to Amman or stay in Beirut. I know they are not exactly NYC, but at least they are safer than Baghdad. You've done enough for the US, giving us the real news, not the administration's pablum. stay safe.
We learn once again, "you plays the game, you takes your chances." Eventually all sembalance of normalacy will be gone in the middle east. When an old man gets drilled and cut-up as some type of example for some unknown reason, what chance do you think a news reporter has. When a fully equiped american warrior in an armored vehicle gets targeted everyday and killed at their pleasure, we need to get the hell right out of there.
I wouldn't have the courage to be there day by day as you do, so that we can get updates from you first hand. I have read and understand the high personal price you have paid for this. Thank you for all you do and Godspeed, Richard Engel.

Reading all these messages is surely disconcerting. The only real truth is that Richard Engel is an intelligent and courageous man who knows far better than most of the bloggers here what is really happening in Iraq. Richard, thank you for your honest and passionate reporting. Be safe and know your work is appreciated.
Yes Americans are anti-muslim, and rightfully so. Muslims have fought hard to earn this reputation with western civilization. We will never turn our backs on Israel, no matter what the cost. The gloves will finally be removed once the psyco-devil that calls himself the leader of Iran detonates a bomb above a major U.S. city. This is not a matter of perspective that man is pure evil. But I guess I don't have much to wory about. Go on step on my soil with a gun and see what we do to you. Every gang member will stand along side every rural hunter and fire upon them. They will be driven from our country along with the Aliens that have tainted our soil. I will join the fight and gladly die for my country and the one true God, Jehovah. America's true citizens are sleeping and one day they will awaken to find the devil on their door step, and action will be taken by it's people to remove the intruders from our homes. And trust me it wont take 1000 yrs of suicide bombs and hiding in caves. We will happily fight you face to face. Bring it Allah, lets see what your insides are made of!
How many of the people writing this anti-journalist crap are currently living, working, and putting their asses on the line in a war zone? Of course, war correspondents get personal satifaction from their work. Who would do a job like that if it was not in some way personally or professionally gratifying? On the other hand, these brave journalists are often the only source of information for many military families whose loved ones are in harms way. I, for one, am grateful for their dedication. Would you rather get your information from Tony Snow, et. al.?
I marvel at some of the specific criticisms being directed in these posts toward “the media” covering this war. To a person, every man and woman in national TV news has to be driven, ambitious and, when it comes to competitors, even ruthless. How could it be otherwise – whom do we think is going to rise to these positions: you? Me? Aunt Sally who runs the annual bake sale down at the firehouse? We need tough, egotistical journalists who can survive the conditions. I don’t know Richard Engel personally, but he strikes me as hardworking, honest (although I’m certain he can’t say everything he knows), and extraordinarily courageous. Look how long he has lasted over there in that mess while others flee. Richard is one of the reasons why my wife and I watch NBC News – just about every time he signs off, we mutter, “hope he stays safe.” I wish he would leave there, but I also know that he likes to be in the Middle East and that there’s no one better at what he does. I don’t think he wants to cover Wall Street. I completely agree that the death of every single soldier deserves the same coverage as the death of a journalist in this war. Immediately after first reporting the death of Anna Nicole Smith, Brian Williams followed with a profile of a young American woman killed in action on the same day. The message was clear – how can we celebrate the life of an Anna Nicole, or go brain-dead over “American Idol,” while failing to reflect on the thousands of fine young people that are being killed, maimed or psychologically destroyed by this horrific, ill-conceived, endless bloody war that just grinds on and on and on? To acknowledge that decades of stupid US policy toward Arab countries in the Middle East had something to do with 9/11 is NOT to argue that the terrorists are right, nor that “we had it coming.” But we must acknowledge that Muslim rage toward us came from somewhere. We live in a world where a person can seriously say on the one hand that the Irish Republican Army’s bloody campaign against Britain was in many ways justified, and on the other hand, “death to all ragheads” because they attacked US. I have had it up to my eyebrows with the griping about “mainstream media” and how liberal the network newscasts are. Hey, here’s a news flash: NBC, CBS and ABC are owned by huge corporations, and big established corporations by nature are anything but liberal. When Ben & Jerry’s buys a network, then we should start worrying about liberal bias. After Vietnam, can anyone truly say that they wish the military could just get on with it, shielded from any news coverage?? Day-to-day mistakes and blind spots are inevitable in journalism, and in twenty years we’ll get a better account of the big picture from historians (I shudder to imagine what we will learn in the years to come). But there is no substitute for a free press in a free country – it’s a requirement for democracies even if what is reported isn’t what we’d like to hear. Richard Engel, be careful out there.
The old saying "there is always 2 sides to the story" just isn't so anymore. Issues, surrounding this whole mess run layers deep and have unlimited paralell relationships. I can not imaging what it would be like for President Bush, to be in a position to make these final decisions regarding this war. He does have other important business decisions to make, lets not forget that. All this, second guessed by every Tom, Dick and Harry. Does anyone really think that he asked for his job focus to change so drastically on that tragic day, 9/11. I am so sick of self centered opinions. How much longer will this go on?
You only report what the Pentagon lets you report. Why haven't we heard all reporters stand-up against the government so that we can get the truth of what is going on in Iraq. You all reporting from the inside of the big wall and make it look like you in the middle of the action... I will be waiting for Hollywood to produce a victory movie for the nation..
As an American citizen, I am ashamed of the brutal comments against the free press who are risking their lives to show, on live film coverage, what is happening in a war zone. I see a lot of blame for the violence of warring factions being pointed towards the free press. Reporters in a war zone show you how it is, without consideration of their risking their lives daily. If you think you could do better, go get yourself a plane ticket, and ask John McCain to go with you, please. He said it was safe, didn't he? Would you rather have John McCain report the news to you about the success of the Administration's war efforts? Those who argue that Bush is being battered as well as muslims, are not seeing through clear lines. I see no reports that Muslims are bad people! What I see and hear about are Radical Muslims that are mutilating bodies and killing innocen people. As for Bush bashing, I see only evidence, with my own eyes from camera footage,of what we, as a country, are going through at the present and clearly see the man responsible, on a daily basis, declaring himself to be correct in his defense of his policy decisions to put America and it's soldiers in this position. Is that bashing? Is thst what makes the press so biased, in their views? Was the press biased in the 4 year coverage of the Clinton Whitewater scandel? I have never seen a political party such as the Republican Right Wing Extremist make critisism of a sitting President and it's administration,a cruel and unusual punishment. By the way I am a moderate Republican. Remember moderates? By the way, where is that smaller government, term limitations and balanced budget promise? With the Exception of CNN, I find little or no bias in the American press and thank God for their presence everywhere.
