Clothing crackdown in Iran

"Things are starting to feel like the old days again," said a cautiously dressed woman in her early 30’s doing some grocery shopping on Valiasr Street, Tehran’s main thoroughfare. "I am very careful about what I wear these days. The police are arresting woman all over the city for what they think is immoral clothing."

"I don’t like to wear the heavy clothing I have on now, especially as it’s almost summer. I hope this doesn’t last," she added.

Under the previous leadership of reformist President Mohammad Khatami, women started to enjoy some freedom about how they could dress. "Moral codes" loosened - allowing woman to show more hair under their headscarves and some flexibility in the style of the "montos" or gowns they wore.

Over time women began sporting outlandish hairstyles under their headscarves, putting on heavy make-up and wearing shorter and tighter montos.

But when President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to power in 2005, there were warnings that strict Islamic codes would be reinforced. Nothing really came of the warnings and commentators predicted that Ahmadinejad’s rhetoric was just hot air. Many believed it was too late to roll back social reforms – especially in Tehran.

But the mood on the streets has changed dramatically in recent days. Thousands of Iranian women have been cautioned about their dress and many more have been arrested in the capital in the fiercest crackdown on what's known as "bad hijab" since the mid-1990’s.

Morality police at the mall
The morality police, who enforce dress codes, are stationed outside shopping malls and crowded streets, warning pedestrians and drivers if they are showing too much hair or wearing clothes that are too tight. If people argue with them, they are shown to a police van and taken to the police station. And shops showcasing what are deemed racy window displays also have been shuttered.

"The police came to my shop, took a look at the clothes we sell and warned me not sell anything that was tight or revealing," said the owner of an upscale boutique in the north of Tehran. "Imagine that? Telling people what they can and can’t wear? This is going to hurt business, everyone will be dressed the same again."

Adding to concerns, enforcement of the dress codes has now been assigned to the Basij, a hard-line government-backed militia.

Men targeted, too
The young and trendy men of Tehran - who have embraced a wild, heavily gelled, spiky hairstyle known as the "Rooster" – also have been targeted in the recent clampdown. Police have warned barber shops not to give men Western-style haircuts or pluck customers eyebrows.

"It’s so difficult living like this," said Milad, a young man in his early 20’s, as he walked out of a barber shop, sporting the "Rooster" hairstyle.

"I remember when my brother was a teenager and I was still a young boy, he came home one day wearing a t-shirt and his forearms had been painted black. My mother asked him what happened and he explained that the morality police had detained him because he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt. As punishment, the section of his arms that were exposed were painted," said Milad. "That was over 10 years ago and he still wears t-shirts and I will still wear my hair like this."

Some say the recent crackdown is simply a ruse by the government to deflect attention from more pressing issues – like the heightened cost of living in Iran, rising gas prices, and tensions with the international community over the nuclear issue.

If that is indeed the government’s strategy, it risks widening the ever-increasing gulf between themselves and ordinary Iranians in the process.

It is one issue to strive to keep your cultural values intact - it is another for the government to try to overpower their citizens in a manner such as this.
Only a man like Ahmadinejad, who apprently thinks he can bring the Member's Only jacket back to its height of popularity, would ban Iranian men from having their unibrows plucked.
Have they found a time machine or are they stuck? I mean it is strange that other religions have progressed with time along with the rest of the world. Do not get me wrong, I do believe that we have let fashion run wild, i.e., the Hilton shirt and Britney's not so glam outfits etc. but these are personal choices. I know that God really does not care what we where. "naked we came into this world and naked we will go out." Do they understand that all of this is making God (Allah) is just laughing at all of this. He must be rethinking his creations. Ya I know someone will trash is posting but I would ask one question. Who really would know what is moral and modest in dress? Remember these rules came from a time when everyone had the same hair do and now one wore shoes. This is 2007. Let men cut their hair and free a sister from covering her head. As a women I'm happy I can show my fashion style with out worry. That I can cut my hair as short as I want and wear a skirt the same lenght. All kidding asid, there are bigger things for police to worry about that over gelled hair and micro-skirts. Say, murders and rapes. Just a thought.
It is better to crackdown now, than to let it go beyond control, ending up in Girls Gone Wild! 50% marriages ending in divorce! Gays/Lesbians marching all over the place! Rapes every other minute! Every kid grows up to be materialist!!
If Iran does not want to be viewed as hypocritical, in addition to the Western haircut, they should give up other western inventions/discoveries such as electicity, telephones, television, modern medicine, cars, planes, computers, etc. They should roll back the clocks to before the European renaissance and only use what was availble in Persia at say about 1300 A.D. Why should they pick and choose? TV can be viewed as a lot worse than a haircut, and why stop at the TV. Throw it all out Iran! Be tough and stand up for your beleifs! No Hair cuts, no TV, no medicine. Go Iran go!
I feel so sorry for these women. They are trapped inside these insane dress codes. One must ask: What loving God would not want His daughters to feel His sun on their shoulders and His wind in their hair?
there is nothing more hurt islam than this knid of dictatorship by few fenatic who never read few pages about islam and do anything pleases them in name of islam. women suffered in time of this more than any time in persian history. Shame on us whohears and do nothing.
Who cares, unlike most the people I'm going to worry about the young people who are Americas. First of all the poor kids who are dying in the Middle East every day. Our government does not treat our teenagers any different; I would hate to be a kid these days. I know if I didn’t get my drivers license when I turned 16 I would have been so mad that someone would have had to call the cops to calm he down. They also tell them what time they have to be off the road because they feel it is to late for them to drive, I would rather meet a teenager on the highway after mid-night rather than a drunk guy. I found out something new the other day, the government does not want teenagers driving and talking on their cell phones. It is nice to know that all governments, not just the Middle East and not just the US, will act like parents while the world falls apart around us. Why doesn’t someone just tell me what I want to know; why do I spend $3.00 for a gallon of gasoline. You know people are getting rich and governments are not doing anything to govern them.
The insane Iranian president Ahmadinemad-oops- Ahmadinejad, thinks he can replace a person's inner policeman, conscience, or superego, with the Basiji, or external policemen, aka brainwashing. I can only quote Sigmund Freud: "The voice of reason is soft, but is persistent."

When do the Iranian people plan on waking up and taking control of their country? We need a Revolution. Step up and get your country back.
In some cultures, there is a requirement to be modestly dressed. The Taliban took that way too far with women being fully covered, even their eyes. In some cases in the Arab and/or Muslim world where there is a clear domination by men, the clothing issue is another sign of their power over women. I am not saying that any one can where anything and show of private areas. I don't advocate that at all. The point is to understand what is moderate and trust that people like to show off. Disallowing spiked hair or short sleeves is silly. Not fully understanding all of the cultural norms of Iran makes passing judgement harder. These Persians are in a state of flux in terms of what their leaders, who are on one extreme, demand and what the rest of society is willing to work with and tolerate. If this keeps up, the strict rules, then there will be an increase in tension. If all of the stricter rules combines with other resentments, then it could result in either elections going more toward the reformers or even another revolution if there is someone to lead it.

I feel so sorry for the people of Iran. Freedom is not something to be taken lightly. How awful it is not to be able to be an individual. I believe that any country who believes in God cannot infringe on the rights of others. Forced religion is not of the heart, and it is not genuine.
I feel sorry for the Iranians ... and the people in the middle east in general. Indeed the control the clerics have over the population is very similar to the control the church exerted over Europe in the middle ages. They are unfortunately, centuries behind the developed world.
I think it's silly that they can't show more of their hair also. However, while everyone is so outraged over this, they have to remember that it isn't a democratic society there. It never has been and obviously won't be for a very long time. These people have always lived like this regardless of the what year it is. Why are we so concerned? There are bigger issues here in our own country that everyone should choose to be outraged with before this one.
You gotta love this religion. It's suppresses women (they might tempt men if they are not dressed in a sack). I actually read where they warned a vegetable vendor to not put two types of vegetables next to each other because one was femal and one was male. What kind of religion is this backward.
This is what happens when you practice religion to an extreme. Even the politics of our country become twisted by radical right wing evangelico idiots. People of religion are afraid that if everyone isn't like them, then maybe their religion isn't true afterall. Everyone must conform to protect the religion. Religion causes problems between people.
It is obvious that with Islam, Muslims park their brains in the basement. That is why Islam is NOT compatible with Democracy! Joseph Anthony
I don't know how long a small percentage of zealots in Iran can run roughshod over the population, but I am betting there will be an overthrow soon if he keeps being such an idiot. He knows virtually nothing about running an economy, and even less about his own religion. Obsession leads to stagnation. He is obviously trying to lock in a dictatorship, before he tries to try an Iraq take-over after the US leaves.
Shouldn't we expect that different cultures will define and enforce "morality" in different ways. In the US, people could get arrested for running around naked while in many parts of Africa this is commonplace. Is it really our position to judge another country because its policies show little regard for freedom of expression and individuality? I consider myself fortunate that I do not live in such a society (one so threatened by world culture that it controls/censures it so pervasively). But I am open to the concept that in Iran, "happiness" has little unless it is rooted in worship. Presumably, Iranians are free to leave and build a life elsewhere if they are truly unhappy. If leaving Iran is disallowed by the government (or if relatives left behind 'pay the price') -- then in my opinion, the policies extend into a violation of human rights that would justify intervention by other countries.
When I lived there under the rule of the Shah the fashions were from France, the woman dressed beautifully if they choose or they wore the traditional Chador if they so choose. CHOICE was the word of the day every day. Then along came Jimy Carter, a fundamentalcase Christian whackjob on New Years eve wielding a copy of the Bible in one hand and a cake in theother, some sort of symbolic garbage. It was during his subsequent meetings with the Shah that he informed the Shah that he woud withdraw US support for his regeime if he did not liberalize his human rights policies. So the Shah gave in and gave Freedom of Speech to the people. The headlines in the newspaper the next day were DEATH TO THE SHAH! Isn't it peculiar how the very people that you are fighting today are of the same ilk as those that the Shah was accused of violating their human rights. Isn't it peculiar that the very people you are fighting today in Iraq are the very same people that Sadaam was keeping under control. Too bad Americans have such tunnel vision when it comes to the world outside their own little space. As an FYI there is a much larger world out there, you should begin to think before you let these so called leaders of yours act. Tonight your King will veto the Iraq War Funding Act and then go on TV to blah blah blah about it. And knowing how weak minded you are you'll give him more of what he wants, your money, your children as sacrifices to his death memorial and more of your rights as human beings. You make me ill.
once again relgion rears its ugly head. I just never thought it would also happen in america as well. there is very little difference between the moral police in iran and some of the pastors here in america.
Its sad to think that we are in the year 2007 and people are being told what they can wear and how they can look. I understand that this is their culture but putting someone in jail for a hair style or wearing something that fits a bit tight is crazy. Someones personal taste or style shouldn't land them in jail.
Cyrlene you can enjoy this freedom because of the men and women who fought and died for these values. Alot of people may critize the USA but when you see this kind of thing being enforced it makes you wonder who are they to critize the US.
Please permit me to assume a culturally relativistic stance as I suggest the we (the West)"don't have a dog in this fight." Having travled abroad on many occasions, one doesn't realize, until returning "home", just how low our own standards have become. It is actually nice to go other places and NOT see cleavage, bare midriffs, and thong exposure with low-rise bottoms. This is not to say that everyone should attire themselves like the priests and nuns of old, but just indicates that modern dress, like every other "right" or "freedom" can be taken to an extreme or abused. Perhaps a "clothing crackdown" wouldn't hurt here.
these are the people you want to hold talks with about atomic power ? they are stuck in the past, for god's sake we are talking HAIR CUTS not nudity. i read this and all i can think of is ignorance and stupidity. when the population is not free to get a hair cut you have to wonder what will these nuts do if they had an atomic bomb. it is no wonger that the population is not very happy about who is leading their nation and the nonsense they are being forced to live with. It is small wonder that they hate the west, it is everything they don't want their people to even know about. they are terrorizing their own people , the question that comes to mind is what the hell are they thinking, how long will the population take this crap before they revolt.i am willing to bet they miss the shah of iran and wish he were back.the leaders they have now are going to fall by their own hands without any outside help. TO THE PEOPLE OF IRAN THROUGH THE BUMS OUT INCLUDING THE SO CALLED RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND DO THE WHOLE MIDDLE EAST A FAVOR. GET RID OF THEM AND BRING PIECE TO THAT WHOLE PART OF THE WORLD. LIVE FREE TO GET THE STUPID HAIRCUT YOU WANT. GOD WILLS IT !!!!!!!!
People get the government they deserve.
Nowhere in the Qur'an does it say a woman has to dress like the current Iranian government says they do. Nowhere! It's simply not in there. Some misguided people seek to interpret a few questionable Hadiths as justification for these restrictions on women. But, regardless of what these misguided people say its crystal clear that if Allah wanted these in the Qur'an he would have put them in there --BUT HE PURPOSELY DID NOT!
It all boils down to the hate of the U.S.A. We are the axis of evil to them. Just the thought of sweat running down a young womans hairy legs is enough to make me puke.
I think we should look to our own problems in America and try to solve them first. I don't agree with the laws in Iran, but I also don't live there. There are many laws I disagree with in America that I am concerned with more so then the laws of other countries. Think about it, is the "Patriot Act" so differnt then some of the laws in Iran. Both of them are used by government to control the people. Maybe we should not be so concerned with the way other governments control "their" population and be more concerned with how our own government (America) is treating Americans. Again, I do not advocate the laws of Iran, but I also don't assume that everyone in Iran wishes to live like I do here in the United States. The price of freedom is high and not every one is willing to pay that price, and as a disabled vet, I don't feel compelled to pay the ultimate price for the freedom of people who most likely don't want it. Maybe the way they live is their version of freedom and we should let them have it.
I must say it is tough enough living in the Middle East and then to have dress codes for the men and women too. I feel sorry for the women who are not allowed by this current leadership to express some sense of style. I realize there is traditional dress for religious holidays or in times of sorrow for a family member, but to arrest people for dressing a certain way seems excessive. There are so many problems to be addressed in the Middle East countries that style of clothing should be the least of their problems. Please just work on living in peace that is the most important thing.
To John in Florida, that is very Christian of you. It sounds like you have it all figured out on how to bring peace to the the land. War is always a great opition when peace is the objective. Maybe you should read the crap you are posting. Michael in Irving, I agree to some extent, I just think that people get the government they put into power. I certainly feel that America has the government that it deserves. But our government certainly doesn't have the leaders our poeple deserve.
To "withheld due to hate mail" I value your opinion and you have made valid points, however you assume that all americans are the same as the ones who make you ILL, regardless of what you might think most americans are intellgient and the defeat of the republicans in the house and senate show that. Yes a lot of americans dont know the world outside their own back yard but that does not make them evil. Thats the same as me saying as Muslims are terroists. I do not think that i know that on the other side of the world there is so one just trying to get by just like me. I beleive that god gave us free will and we choose to follow what we think is right. I dont agree that a small sect of people can judge whats right and whats wrong no one can judge. Im sorry you feel that way about Americans but please look past your own hatered. "he who cast the first stone" and Bush is not my King the fact that we have checks and balances that has made sure Bush has not made matters any worse than they already are. Im sorry that Americans have left a bad taste in your mouth but we are not the monsters you seem to think we are
Talk about ignorance and stupidity. A little research in culture diversity as well as the differences in collectivistic and individualistic societies would do a few people some good in this forum, at least help limit irrational posts. We see the ills of a collective society because we are all about self esteem and free will. We are also blind to the negatives of a totally “me” centered society like our own.
Blame it on Allah. Allah came down from heaven and told the Iranian nation to not have the western haircut. What is a western haircut? If it is the spiky, over gelled hair ( rooster hair they call it in iran ), then the Iranian nation need to get their facts straight. That hair style is originally from Japan. Ever seen the Dragon ball Z that the kids watch? Seen those Japanese cartoons that have those funky hairdo? Its not a western hairdo. It's actually aan eastern hairdo.
oh my god these poor woman are they living in the dark ages, it seems to me that these woman should rise up and defy the govenment, imaging walking around with just the opening for the eyes, i am very glad i am living in the free world..
Yet another reason to leave Iran alone. This regime is going to collapse on its own stupidity.
Unfortunately the weomen of Iran are not free, they are subjugated under sharia, and its just plain evil to suggest that a woman has no right in what she can wear. Sure, there are lots of people who wear really weird stuff, but what is more vile than to subjugate one whole section of society on the wishes of men who have no sense of gods glory in the evolution of the human form.
the clothing is Islam ,it was the same way the jews were marked by Hiter,Now we see goverment marking whole groups, noting will happen now but the future is unsure is at work here.
To Ismail in Atlanta: why are you living in this country, if everything offends you so mightily? Why aren't you living in some place that appeals to your sense of decency and comfort? Like Iran, perhaps?
I saw a pic of women who wanted the ban upheld. They were all ugly. Too jealous of the few good looking ones. This is all about control. The nutjob haulocaust-denying wackjob of a president doesn't want his dear suicide bombers to see a pretty babe and decide he doesn't want to blow himdself up anymore. Make sense?
We have the social police here in America, too. I don't feel free. I live in fear of social laws I haven't heard of yet. You can get the haircut you want in America and you can pay the price if it is considered "abnormal" by the mainstream. Good luck finding a job.
Things we(the USA) should have done in the past so we wouldn't be where we are today. Should not have given Isreal the Palistinian's land after world warII, Should have continued east after the fall of Berlin, same time period. Should have held onto the middle east when we were there the first time and originally found the oil that is now funding terrorism. And currently since we allowed these messes to get where they are, we should quit trying to bring peace to places that will never ever see it. And quit calling these little efforts wars. These are not wars and they cannot be "won" as an actual war can. If you want to call it war, then go in and kick their butts. If it is not a war, pack up and go home. They are never going to change. We just need to concentrate on not letting them come over here with their nonsense, and if they try, kick their butts and come on back home again. This current mess is sucking us dry and when the crap really hits the fan we may be too weak to fight it.
To Susan Peterson, you should know that they tried this woman's protest before in Iran and they shot the women down in the street. It takes a lot of guts to die for your beliefs. To the rest of you who believe that the Religious fanatics are confined to one Nation, sorry but it is happening all over the Muslim world and will be happening in Europe also. (Do any of you remember the mini-War in the Balkans in the last 10-15 years. We still have troops stationed in those countries after Clinton said maybe they needed to be there 1-2 years. Wakeup!
Marty, in Texas, I did not see anything in John's (Florida) posting that said he was a Christian. Why throw that into the mix? Just a thought. Lisa
TO marty in arlington texas: where did you read the word WAR in my posting?? at last count they hold elections in iran . through the bums out is about ELECTIONS. try reading whats there not what you think it is.they will fall by their own hands means we keep out once again no connection to WAR.one mor thing i don't mix my religion with politics.i spoke "HAIR CUTS " i don't think they have become religious. but i could bve wrong.
Mohammed was just a man. Islam is his version of the world he wanted to see. His teachings amount to no more than the accumulated knowledge of mankind which he garnered from the Bible as well as other sources. All of these books, the Bible, the Qu'ran, etc are the cumulative experience of man not a "GOD". The sooner mankind realizes that religion is an invention of the human mind the better this world will be. Why has no prophet shown himself for 1400 years? why has "God" not manifested himself in X THOUSANDS OF YEARS. Religions have been interpreted, augmented and enforced by man. Cannot one see the human frailties inherent in each religion? These religions are all the same, ie. products of the human mind influenced by good times and bad. Mohammed was a good salesman. He did not trash the competition, christians, instead he acknowledged and expanded upon their concepts. The bottom line is that religion has value for what it teaches us about living with one another. Beyond that it is source of trouble for all who do not open their minds. Everything in moderation. even too much oxygen will kill you!!
for all three of you, I don't see any women walking topless in NYC street, why? we came naked right? God's rules are mostly made for the whole societies. Religon don't progress with time. Man does and man made societies and man made religon do. God's words and values are the same as from the day this world was created. Britney is just a product of this progress society. There is something call prevention.
Thats so not fair, they should be able to have freedom of dressing any way they want.
