I thought Mugabe was our CIA puppet?
i've always thought of mugabe as another saddam. we set him up, but when he gets too outrageous and no longer does what the administration wants, we whack him and find the next guy. as long as we keep the african nations fighting each other, we can keep taking their natural resources. if we let the chaos stop for long enough, they'll organize and try to stop us.
Mmmm.... in the peace corps we generally considered him to be a pawn...
You can try to make Mugabe look bad (and it's true, he's definitely not an ideal president)... BUT to his credit, he kicked out the White Man in the 70's at a time when the British-ruled imperialistic Rhodesia was helping to steal ALL of the regions natural resources. At least the natives now have their country back. If you want to blame someone or something for the current state of the economy, then blame the former imperialistic paradigmns, which gave nothing back in way of infrastructure or education to the black people of Zimbabwe.
it's interesting that you had 2 white (south african?) analysts interviewed about what mugabe has done and what his historic legacy will be. and there is a lot of discussion about "the economy, the economy, and the economy". if there was ever a country which got caught up in the classic 3rd world debt crisis, it's zimabwe. for a clear picture of what happened to this country, read "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man". You can google it to get the jist.
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS. It's decimating that region. Africa gets no attention whatsoever from the world community, probably because they're black. Admit it's true. All we hear about is Israel and Iraq. Who owns the press?
Hah! Blaming Mugabe for Zimbabwe's long list woes is like blaming the American Indian for high drunk-driving rates on reservations.
.... so... you'd rather have another group of african warlords controlling the Zim/Rhodesia???! jesus! at least some of the killing stopped temporarily. who are these idiots???
There are some very profitable mines (gold, metals) in Zimbabwe, but they are operated by western companies. I'd like to see full disclosure of how the royalties are distributed. Zimbabwe's poverty doesn't have anything to do with local corruption, it has to do with the flow of monies. In Zimbabwe, the flow only goes one way: out of the country.
Whoaa, I see the "truthers" have landed here. And Im guessing they will be telling us the pluses of Castro and his "everybody can read" revolution. What utter nonsense. Mugabe ruined this all on his own. He destroyed the infrastructure and gave the land to 12 year old "veterans" who had never worked on a farm. Then his wife gave the rest of the farms to her "friends" to run into the ground - which they did. Turned the country that used to be an EXPORTER of food into an importer. Just as will soon happen in Venezuela. Once the farmers quit producing there also. Chavez just mandated set milk and meat prices...so it will now fail. Watch and learn
