Female suicide bombers motive: revenge

Maha didn’t sound like the murderer she wants to be.

The 20-year-old sounded polite and soft-spoken as she told me about her plans to become a suicide bomber. Her motivation, as she told me over the phone (she was too scared to meet in person), is not political, patriotic, religious or even, like some male suicide bombers, bizarrely sexual; for her there would be no 72 houris, the dark-eyed female attendants some Islamic teachings say care for male martyrs in paradise.

There is no equivalent for female martyrs, no male houris.

VIDEO: Iraqi women becoming more active insurgents -- even as suicide bombers.

Our talk took me back to a trash-filled street in Cairo where in 1997 I spoke with a group of young men, all poor, unmarried, undereducated Islamic radicals who were trying to convert me. They repeatedly stressed how virgins would dote me on me in heaven.  One of the men pulled a cigarette lighter from his pocket and held the yellow flame under my outstretched palm.  I pulled back my hand in pain.

"Does that hurt you?" he asked.

"Yes," I said.

"Just this tiny little flame hurts you? Now imagine what Hell fires would feel like for eternity. But in paradise there are virgins… virgins who smell like mangos," he said.

But Maha didn’t talk to me about rewards in paradise, but revenge in this life.

Driven to violence
Maha is a Sunni. Until a year ago, she was living with her husband and extended family in Baghdad. Her life quickly collapsed. Her husband moved to Syria, like many here to look for work and safety. Then a Shiite militia group -- she says the Mahdi Army -- killed her two brothers and burned her home. Maha became a refugee and moved in with other relatives in another Baghdad neighborhood. That’s when she was recruited.

"A neighbor saw that I was depressed and I told him I was so angry I could blow myself up," she said.

"There are groups that can help you do that," the neighbor said.

And he introduced them to her.

Maha said the neighbor took her to a Baghdad apartment where a 30-year-old woman taught her how to wear a suicide belt under her black abaya (robe) and approach a crowd. She now awaits further instructions.

Numbers increasing
Yesterday, we interviewed Mia Bloom, author of "Dying to Kill: The Allure of Suicide Terror" and a scholar at the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs. Her analysis of women like Maha and the dangers they pose in Iraq and elsewhere is worth quoting extensively.

"Percentage-wise, the number of women (suicide bombers) in Iraq is still fairly low, and I think this might be a reflection of the fact that at least within the most extreme Sunni organizations like al-Qaida there is disagreement about what role women should play."

So far there have been at least seven recorded cases of female suicide bombers in Iraq.  Bloom expects the number to rise.

"It would seem that the number of women being used is increasing, and we have seen increasing numbers of women being used to kill civilians, because the women blend very well into a civilian population," she said, adding there is very little American troops can do to stop them. For now, only female U.S. soldiers or interpreters pat down women at checkpoints. Iraqi soldiers don’t do it at all.

"If the American forces start searching women who are traditionally dressed very invasively," Bloom continued, "it's going to aggravate and really incense the civilian population, and that helps the terrorists mobilize people to support them. And if we don't look at women at all because we don't want to irritate -- or we assume that women won’t be involved -- then women are the perfect operatives because they fall under our radar screen.

"So it's almost as if we are damned if we do, damned if we don't."

Hanif, I believe in your sincerity, and I believe we are all religious in some way or another. I lived in Iran for several years. Muslims are nice people but their beliefs are fanatical; as christians were in the past, as Hasidics can be, as Buddhissts can be. Don't blame Bush for Iraqi waiverability. Their faith teaches vengance, not education. You want us to start targeting you here? You think Bush is behind that? Your just sunjectively mad because your religion is killing each other and its embarrassing when compared to our tolreance. When was the last time anyone over there used forgiveness. Quote me a passage from the Quoran that preaches tolerance and forgiveness of the wicked and I'll buy you lunch.
paul that was just totally wrong these people rarely try to blow americans up all they do is try to blow up innocent civilians. people like you preaching about how right it is to blow yourself up and kill the innocent need slapped. just like the author of this bleeding heart story. if they want sympathy they better look somewhere else besides for america i show no sympathy for murderers. like i said before the idiots run the country over there and until the people can pull the heads out of you know where their country is going to be a perfect model for chaos not democracy i dont see osama blowin himself up.hmmm hero of the muslim world sends out all the ones dumb enough to do it for him. in fact i think hes actually smarter then the idiots he convinces to blow themselves up for his power.
Just wanted to point out that 72 virgins isn't even in the Koran. Also, revenge and brutality in the name of christianity throughout history shows that these things aren't tied to any one religion, but in fact all religions are capable of being used for evil purposes.
Any poster suggesting violence here should be banned.
If people want to blow themselves up, so be it. Why do they do it in a public place and impact other people's lives? Besides, when headlines like "Suicide bomber kills 16 people" begin to become commonplace - the "impact" you seek is diluted anyway. Anger, spite and violence cannot possibly buy you a harem of virgins in the great beyond. No matter what your beliefs, any God that says it's cool to kill scores of other people in his name is a bored God and perhaps likes to sit back and watch chaos like a good Hollywood movie. How about doing what you can positively on THIS blue marble in THIS life before you shuffle off the mortal coil. Show me one gram of evidence there is anything after the time you have here as a carbon-based critter relying on the oxygen we are all depleting and I'll change my stripes. Until such time, blow each other up all you want... IDIOTS!
OK, we Americans: What would you do if the Iranian army invaded our beloved country, killed your brothers, sisters, parents, children, corrupted fellow citizens to cooperate qith them and do the same, destroyed your property, and still demanded for us to love them. What would you think your wife, sister, or doughters should do once you were also assassinated for being "a terrorist" in your own country, attacking those "noble and pretty" good foreigners coming here to save you?
Mankind's lost sense of civility and compassion for human life...these active elements will forever keep this world trapped in its own prison or hell.
Just for the record I absolutely condemn suicide bombings and cluster bombs and depleted uranium weapons and a lot of other things. All I want is to have all of us look at the root cause and work to make this world a better place. A lot of people have died in my opion and no WMDs have been found yet.May be we should end the search and bring everyone home.
This is a war that has been going on sence the idea of God. It is a war that will never be won and probably never end. They have their beliefs in their mind just as the rest of America has their own and there is no changing that. We have always killed in revenge as well; we just never took are own life with the otehrs we kill. The best thing we can do now is pull our troops out and not let anymore die and hope they kill themselves off.
OK, we Americans: What would you do if the Iranian army invaded our beloved country, killed your brothers, sisters, parents, children, corrupted fellow citizens to cooperate with them and do the same, destroyed your property, and still demanded for us to love them. What would you think your wife, sister, or daughters should do once you were also assassinated for being "a terrorist" in your own country, attacking those "noble and pretty" good foreigners coming here to save you?
This sounds like just one more example of the exploitation of women in a male-dominated society....I don't mean to be stupid, but, of the dwindling number of professionals left in Iraq, are there any medical personnel who can or do provide mental health services for these people? Who is left to address this generation of PTSD sufferers within the Iraqi population? Does their belief system even allow them to admit that they have a problem?
HEADLINES 2027 LAST REMAINING IRAQI CITIZEN KILLED BY THE LAST SUICIDE BOMBER.
US has smart bombs and the 3rd world has even smarter bombs, called suicide bombers. I do not think you people who promote more hatred know what you are talking about. Suicide bombers are a weapon US does not know how to detect and disarm. So instead they kill 100's of civilians on the suspicioun of terror, just in case they are suicide bomber and report killing only terrorists. How convinient don't you think. Killing is killing, and by the way only cawards kill using remote control and laser guided misiles so that they do not have to face the enemy. Look where your leader is when trouble arrives, in his Texas den. Like the 1st post states "It is shameful to kill someone in the name of God". I suppose it is OK to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent and call it collateral damage...God bless America....does this sound like religious statement!
Mr. Engel, It's not too difficult to understand these women and the problems they have had and continue to have in their lives. Is it possible to have more discussions on the good things going on in Iraq, etc..We have soliders that tell us that they return because of the good/positive things going on this country. The public needs to hear/see/know the good things/positive side of this story. Maybe, we would be more concerned about these people and more supportive of own troops if we could know about all the good. What is happening in other parts of Iraq? We appreciate your time/trouble in being in the Iraq area and pray for your safety along with our troops and those that want their country to be at peace.
abolish all religions. that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. It's not about religion wipe.
I believe it was written in the Koran. . ."Do not go into the world and create mischief." That should pretty much knock the wind out of the 72 Virgins supposedly on standby for a suicide bomber. I wonder if Allah has a special plan for those that persuade the innocent to contradict his word. . .
Nice propaganda piece. People: remember that all war is deception and MSNBC is a part of this madness.
All of you in the west have absolutely no idea what it is like to constantly live in fear. Fear from American soldiers seen as occupiers; fear from Shiite extremists bent on revenge; fear from Sunni extremists angry at everyone. Then they come and kill your famliy. How many American films are based on revenge where the protagonist is a hero? You are quick to identify with your Hollywood fantasy but when a real person does the same you see it as a travesty. Under the occupation everyone feels helpless, hopeless and depressed. What do we have to lose? I'd want to take out as many of them as I can if I were in the same positoin.
Please go back and learn history. America did not go to Afghanistan and kill "MILLIONS" of Arabs as you say. We went there because we were told Osamma was there. We also certainly did not drop the bomb to just "kill Japanese" we did it to end the war and save thousands of American lives. Genius, we would have left them alone if they would not have attacked us first, but since these groups wanted world domination, they knew they had to take us out in some way. Since these Middle-East countries allow these radical groups to live, recruit, and train within their borders I don't feel bad being there...since your logic is to leave the "innocent" countries alone and attack the army that attacked us. My question is.. Where is this Terrorists army and in what country is it held in so we can go get it? Let me get this straight, now this is the same Army you all talk about we should go get instead of being in Iraq, this is the same ONE army that has been taking hostages and blowing themselves up in the name of their religon for the last forty years, right? Get real... If one more person says that we should be in Darfur instead of Iraq I will scream. If we are wrong in fighting a war in Iraq, then we are wrong in fighting a war in Darfur.. you must stay consistant. We could shift though.. taking you suggestions, we will leave Iraq and concentrate on Darfur.. this time we will do what the Dems and the Liberals want us to do.. We will follow the United Nations examples and the liberals examples... we will just talk about the problem... for years and years and years and not do anything about it, especially when the people who are doing the killing dictate to us what we should be doing. Maybe a solutiion to all of these suicide bomobers is not put just put the responsibility for us to fix the problems.. perhaps they can actively teach these misguided people the way the religon is supposed to be and not the misguided way they have been taught and are practicing? Maybe they should take a greater responsibility and not worry so much about being discriminated against...change everyones minds by changing the Jihadists hearts and minds. Oh, we could also make these governments who get billions from oil revenues to share it with their own people?
Mr. Engel I am very mad. We are the greatest sufferers of all time. No one before us and no one in the future is a greater sufferer then us. We have a trademark on ‘suffering’ We have a legitimate right to resist any ‘sufferer’ infringement. ‘I’ am a huge gigantic sufferer.
I love all the comments but why are we all trying to make sense out of nonsense. The muslim religion has been hijacked by the radicals and they use bizarre thinking (the 40 virgins, killing non-believers, etc.) and the extreme supression of women to further their radical cause in the so called name of God. What God asks people to do these types of things? It is not any God I know or want to know. Mainstream muslims are letting the extemeists high-jack the religion.
i agree with arabs that blow themselves up. they are oppressed by the american oprssores........the americans must leave immediatly before this kinda stuff happens in america because the hatred is becoming so much that it will spill over their borders
How strange is it that muslims continually call those muslims who perform extremist acts 'non-muslims' where is the action of these upstanding muslims to protect their faith? If a Catholic would blow himself up, the pope surly would excommunicate the individual. Where is the outrage in the muslim community over this? Where is the condemnation? Its seems muslims talk tough about the problem but, then continually blame Israel or the West for all of the Arab/muslim problems in the world. Stop scapegoating the West start looking within. The problem is with islam/arabs, once that is fixed, the Israelis will treat you with respect as an equal. I really don't believe the civilized world can take these ingnorant masses seriously.
Without doubt a very sad and disturbing state of affairs. From the very onset of this "war" we lacked the true understanding of these people, and, more unfortunately, we still do not. Their culture and their troubles are very different from those we experience and without understanding makes it quite difficult to help them. We can, of course help them a great deal if we leave.
a freedom fighter is not a terrorist. a martyr is not a suicide bomber.religion does not kill people. people kill people. people use the name of God to justify what are Evil acts. i think the christians were the first to use the name of God to kill people. War has nothing to do with religion and has nothing to do with God.when will we understand that we will never when a war on a foreign land esp. when the people are willing to blow themselves up.what would you be willing to do if you were in her shoes? buy the way, is the death penalty a type of revenge killing? oh! never mind, thats in our bible "an eye for an eye" so it's justified
Dear Richard, It is so very sad that these women seem to see no other choice, but to become a suicide bomber. I can't imagine how awful it must have been to have your brothers killed by the Mahdi Army. And then also to have them burn your home. I wish that somehow that there was a place and people where these women could reeive support and guidance. Maha seems to feel that if she accomplishes this then the rewards will be in heaven. Well, she is only twenty years old should have her whole life ahead of her to become anything the desires to be. I know that sometimes in life one feels alone and nobody seems to care about you. She is afraid in her own country and it is heartbreaking. These people who are causing this violence are ruining lives as well as there own surroundings. I only hope that someday Maha will find peace in her own country as well as within herself. It makes it that much more difficult for the military to protect civilians from violence when even the women are being used as bombers. As I said before I only hope she finds peace in her country and her heart and soul. Peace be with her. Peace be with you Richard. Stay Safe!
Until the economic and political culture of Iraq changes, the solution for any and all sides will continue to be the extermination of all those who are willing to fight, while taking down as many innocents down along with them as possible, through continued and indiscriminate bloodshed. The majority of insurgents who are willing to resort to such extremes are living in dire situations without hope or any meaningful future. That includes both men and women of all ages If Iraq is not able to mitigate these circumstances for its people, we are likely to see the continuation and escalation of such instances. This is especially true for urban areas such as Baghdad and Mosul, where the people are generally unemployed and survive on the black market economy, to which the government turns a blind eye and/or reaps the benefits for themselves. Of course, this mentality is so deeply rooted in their culture, as it was their means of survival under centuries of imperial and dictatorial rule, such as the Persian and Ottoman empires to the more recent Saddam Hussein. Although far from perfect, the experiments found in northern Iraq's Kurdish areas are introducing capitalist ideas with many positive results. Consumerism and and economic growth are beginning to show balance even between the two factions of Kurdish political parties. This is the one place in Iraq where the economic and political culture are changing, and it has brought them stability and hope. Unfortunately, many of Baghdad's citizens are migrating to greener pastures, such as Irbil or Syleymaniah, where they are willing to start over, with a new sense of hope for their families. Thus, Baghdad is left with even less hope and oppurtunity, and more people, of all ages and genders will succumb to the temptations of extremism. If the rest of Iraq will come to some sort of stability, Baghdad may remain the hotbed it has been for many years to come.
hey paul it wasn't the americans that killed her family it was her own countrymen, but it surely wasn't the women shopping, or the childrent playing that she will kill with her actions who killed her family. I think that while alot of the iragi people would like peace there are many many of them letting these terrorists from all the other countries in to do what they will in the form of violence. unfortunatley there is a never ending supply of fanatics because they are indoctrinated by their "holy leaders" from birth. THis is isnt about religion its about complete control and wanting the whole world to live by their misguided rules.
Hey, I agree with a lot of you here. Maha, didn’t get her weekly UN check She’s got every right to kill herself and anyone else she feels like. Look, Maha experienced some difficulties in her life and on top of that did not receive a nice house and new car from the infidel countries, Doesn’t everyone go around murdering people when times are tough? Oh, if only Maha had a chance to live in the Palestinian territories, she would have at least had room and board covered by the UN/ EU, and considered a 'World Class sufferer', and no one would have whined if she went out on a killing spree.
Remember, how you think and act is based completely upon your upbringing and life experiences. It's easy to sit here as relatively lucky Americans (as I and many of the other responders are) and judge the decisions of other people in horrific situations. A long term solution to fighting in the middle east will unltimately be about respecting each other as human beings (including one another's religions). We've made some unbelievable strides and typically these strides have come in very small steps accompanied by much suffering. We must never lose sight of the ultimate goal, which is to always be moving in the direction of respect and understanding.
Reading the majority of the posted notes here make me sick! You people have no idea what it would feel like to lose your home, your brothers, sisters, husband, wife, etc; to experience true hopelessness w/o any control in the matter. Weak minded, self entitled, lazy Americans of this generation are the down fall of this country! Unfortunately those who built this country to what it is today are long gone and what's left is their self important, entitled, lazy, narrow minded grand children and great grand children! I challenge you to step outside of your narrow minded bubbles and try to really capture and understand young Iraqi's like Maha's situation. Most of you people get stressed out over a few thousand dollars or losing an elderly family member, or acceptance by ones peers, much less struggling for survival.
Sallam,,,as you spew free speach agin you show the lie. why not tlel the real story? no just post more carefullyu worded poropaganda crap. spew the same eaxct excuses and lie ot your self. lets do the real story coward. Why do u wish to be a martyr? becuse they killed me family, why did they kill you famly? in revenger becuse of the sunni who killed thier famly,,why did the sunni kill thier famly? becuase they do not fight your illeagle occupation. what does surah ayat 2;191 say?
Every single personon this blog has reiterated the same self-righteous, feeble minded, brain-washed drivel that is force-fed to them by such hate-mongering evil people as bill 'o' reilly, rush limbaugh and wolf blitzer. I've pasted an article below that I wrote in an earlier blog; This, then, is the face of the freedom and democracy Iraq is to be blessed with. Starting with the "shock and awe" of the first bombings, through the sickening perversions at Abu Ghraib to the animalistic execution of Saddam Hussein, Iraq, the cradle of civilisation, has been turned into an atrocity exhibition. With the unprecedented media coverage and public attention that the current situation in Iraq continues to receive, it has become something of a microcosm of the seminal evils that plague humanity today. The war in Iraq needs to be analysed and put into proper perspective so that we may learn a lesson from it. This might be our last chance to realise how shallow and jaded we have become. It might be our last chance for preserving what is left in us that is good and pure and noble. It is perhaps our last chance for redemption. Regardless of what personal travails and domestic mandates tie us down, we cannot absolve ourselves of sharing the responsibility for the iniquities of our Governments and armies. We cannot feign ignorance of what is happening in Iraq. We cannot profess innocence. We are the gluttons that enrich and empower megacorporations with our conscious consumption of this planet's limited resources. We are part of the vicarious socioeconomic structure that requires war, that requires robbing the resources of the already destitute. We elect and re-elect the Governments that execute unjust wars and the Governments that aid and abet them. It is from the taxes we pay that the weapons that massacre innocents are bought. It is in our name and with our aid that all these misdeeds are perpetrated and that is why we should care and that is why we share a duty to do something. The other reason why we should care about what is happening in Iraq is that though we may forgive ourselves for our apathy and may quiet our collective conscience, history will not forgive us. We are setting a precedent for others-when it is our turn to be run through the mill, our cries will meet with silence too. The follow up to the war demonstrated the shameless dishonesty not only of certain politicians but also of the western media. Any pretence of impartiality in delivering the news was shed and the media by and large took part in creating an entirely false perception of Iraq's military capabilities and it's links with terrorism. The huge power yielded by megacorporations became evident as oil and reconstruction firms made immense profits within months of the commencement of the war. The sanguivorous version of capitalism fathered by Milton Friedman and his Chicago School economists was on display. Awarded a Nobel Prize for his dehumanising of modern economics, Friedman's "Laissez-faire" dream has become a nightmare for the poor and desenfranchised. To maintain obscenely excessive societies, the robber barons of the west continue scavenging profits from the rest of the world. There are limited resources in this planet we inhabit; the excesses of some must mean the deprivation of others. When private enterprises grow unchecked, they grow out of control and eventually become destructive manifestations of human greed. After every justification of the Iraq invasion was found lacking, the western media has now engaged in a childish rant blaming the Iraqis themselves for the current state of affairs. The poor Iraqis apparently lacked the will to set aside their differences and establish democracy. How unthankful of them, especially after all the sanctions, the bombing and Abu Ghraib. Three thousand people died in the attacks of September 11, 2001. Heaven and earth were moved to avenge these deaths, it was said that the World was forever changed by those attacks on American soil. "We will never forget" is the affirmation on each anniversary of the attacks. The question is, who will mourn for the Iraqi men women and children dying every day? It is 9/11 every day there; should we have an anniversary every day of the year for them? Why does the world not act with the same decisiveness and the same passion as they did after September 11, 2001 after each atrocity that takes place in the world? To quote Shylock's speech from Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice"; ..."fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, heal'd by the same means, warm'd and cool'd by the same winter and summer as a Christian is... If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die?" Civilisation and free thinking are not idiosyncrasies of western society. They have existed since the Sumerian's built cities at the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates. The Epic of Gilgamesh was written two thousand years before the story of Noah's Ark made it's first appearances as scripture. Yet the leaders of the west behave as if the Iraqis are savages who cannot be trusted to coexist like normal human beings, for them it is still the "white man's burden" to be hated for bringing civilisation to the savage. They still ask in disbelief "why do they hate us?" It is time to raise our voices, be it a muslim, christian, jewish or any other voice. It is time to let those we call our leaders and who act in our name know that we will not accept this war. That we will not accept any war. That we will not let this world that belongs to all of us become the hollow existentialist wasteland they want it to become.
Many of the blog comments reflect minimal understanding of the history of religious conflict---while few committed suicide, the ability of Catholics and Protestants to kill each other with marvelous abandon from the early 16th century through the Peace of Westphalia all in the name of Christ, God and the fundamental truth each saw. A thoughtful book worth reading in Louise Richardson's, WHAT TERRORISTS REALLY WANT. In addition to have a better historical understanding of Christian violence committed against fellow Christians let alone other non Christian groups, one would be also wise to understand the "fall out" from WW 1 in terms of the ensuing reshaping of the so-called Middle East. Many terrorists tend to see the world in Manichean terms, empathize with those who have been victimized by the "West" (consider the CIA assisted overthrow of the Iranian govt and subsequent est. of the late Shah in the early 50s; our support for highly undemocratic govts such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Gulf oil states; and Israel; and the highly materialist lifestyle and world view of a West highly addicted to black heroin ---- it is always in the eyes of the beholder that reality becomes a given)and their desire for revenge. These are not simple issues and the clear inability of the Bush regime to understand the complexity of these factors and others has led to a simplistic "war of terror" which has now turned into a disaster
It's easy for us to pass judgment when we are sitting in front of our computers in our safe homes. I think the thing most of us fail to realize with this female suicide bomber is that she has lost hope and has lost the life she had. I can't imagine a person can think clearly, when they struggle with the bare necessities to live and provide for their families. Think about the things around you (family, society, friends, possesions, comfort, food) and imagine if they were all gone. They didn't just disappear, but were either stolen from you or murdered. What would your state of mind be? I want to state clearly that I do not approve of this woman's tactics or justify her actions. If we can just take a moment to consider and listen to her, we may get a clearer understanding of what is going on over there. It's become very clear to me that destroying an entire government is never be an option. Without a stable government people cannot have the basic necessities of life. We could've removed Saddam and kept the government in place. Even if we believe our government is the best one out there (which i do believe), it may not be the best one for everyone. As aweful as Saddam was, he led a functioning government. As of right now, we cannot say we're creating one for Iraq. What it appears that we have created is a battleground for terrorists/islamic extremists where we fight them on their own ground and where they have the advantage. In closing, I'd like to state that leaving Iraq is not an option until the people there have a basic functioning government. I do not believe in turning away from the messes I create, but in fixing my mistakes and I expect my government to follow suit. Reflecting back on my intial support of the Iraq war, I think back on how naive I was and on how much wiser I need to become. I also wonder at how we as Americans, took an initial terrorist attack on our soil and got suckered into Iraq from this administration. Where is Osama Bin Laden? How come we have yet to capture him? I'm sick of the excuses. We spend billions upon billions on Iraq and yet we cannot capture one man? A man that anyone in the world can recognize?
Iraqis cannot get American Visas. You'd think we want them here! Since all the best and brightest are fleeing Iraq, we should have them flee to the USA! We need them and they need us.
Are there any educated people left in Iraq? I think anyone with a brainwave has already left the country. They fled to safer ground to save there own lives dashing any hope of ever establishing a stable economy in Iraq. We failed to protect the doctors, teacher's scientists, technicians, etc. The only people left in Iraq now are either too poor to leave or insurgents themselves. Our military should be at home protecting our borders and training, not being blown up daily thrown into this hell hole.
why are all these familes from iraq going through this hell? because we, the U.S.A, said they burned down the twin towers on 9-11. these people have no connection with 9-11. they never knew what the twin towers looked like or knew anything about it whatsoever. but somehow with this huge propaganda, these hundreds of thousands of iraque familes are dying because of what happened on 9-11??? we, americans should be ashamed of ourselves. instead of killing bin laden, whom we know where he is in pakistan, we wont kill him because the pakis will fight back, we condemn iraque people by the hell we created there. again, can you tell me why this female had to indure this hell she is in. how is it connected to ny on 9-11?? millions of iraques and their dead wants to know. you idiots better go back to the anna nicole smith saga.
This is what the American people get for electing a tyrant as a president. As a former soldier that has lost men in Afghanistan, and Iraq, it sickens me to think that our leaders put us in this position under false pretenses. And that they are making a killing off of our labors through there buddies in Haliburton, KBR and others. And yet as soon as I made it back to this country, what happened.. I was stopped by the local police for having expired tags and my truck was towed.... Some gratitude from a country that is supposed to be free...Where is that freedom.. I would suggest that we bring our military back here and fight for Americans liberty right here in our own countries, and any cops, prosecutors, Judges, legislators and higher ranking officials that want to violate my rights... Kill the ba$tards.. That goes for the president and his cabinet as well, as he has violated more constitutonal amendments, and committed war crimes by getting us involved in this unjust war. "There is no crueler tyranny than that which is exercised under cover of law, and with the colors of justice …." United States vs Jannottie, 673 F.2d 578, 614 (ed Cir. 1982) “The tree of liberty needs to be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and the blood of tyrants.” Thomas Jefferson Jason
Many of you have no idea whatsoever what these islamic fundamentalists are actually striving towards. Please watch this video to see and learn about the enemies that we face. http://multimedia.heritage.org/content/wm/Lehrman-092706a.wvx There is no real answer to the problem that we face over there. Just remember that as long as we stay over there they arent here in the US taking down our buildings and killing our children. We need to continue to take the fight to them to ensure the security of our families and our way of life. The minute that we pull out they will take this act as a sign of weakness, they will rattle their sabres and once again take the fight to us here in the continental US. I'm sure that you don't want IED's to start going off along the highways outside your towns. This may seem far fetched but think of this...if thousands of Mexicans flow into the US annually UNDETECTED then how secure are our borders. This makes something like I mentioned possible. You can rally around the democrats about how horrible the war is and how we need to pull out...all I will say is that your just adding to the problem. I hate the thought that my brothers and sisters are dying in that god-forsaken place, war is an ugly thing no matter how you conduct one. Once you watch the video I attached you'll fully understand what I mean. Sleep well tonight knowing that the men and women of Americas armed forces are doing what they have to to keep these radical fundamentalists over there where they need to be. If you really want something to question the government about, ask them what are they doing to secure our borders, and moniter the islamic factions that are already within the US. If you watched the video you'll know what I'm talking about.
Right on I hate stupidity!
Her husband moved to Syria... to look for work and safety. (and left her behind) That guy must have been a real winner. What kind of a guy leaves his wife behind in a war zone, alone to die... Meanwhile other people are mistakenly under the belief that if they blow themselves up and kill as many innocent people as they can there are virgins waiting for them after they die. Mohammed wasn't even on the same page as these people. Here's a suggestion. Someone might find that Maha would be a good wife in the now, instead of encouraging her to become a suicide bomber. Then let the women wear jeans, t-shirts, and their traditional head gear. Carry on.
good job there Mr. President. stay the course. regardless of what anyone is saying, do what you feel is correct. and I know that I can trust you simply because I know that you have thought this through with great understanding and conviction.
To Ira Novich: Vendetta does NOT have its root in the Middle East. It's Italian. To George Vascellaro: I hope you're kidding. But I live in OK as well and know all too many of your type. You are the Baptist equivalent of the Sunni/Shiite "radicals." If the SecDef is having to extend the tours of Army units in Iraq to 15 months, where oh where are we to get the boots to take on both Iran and Syria? Or perhaps they, like the Iraqis, will welcome us as liberators, too?
"Maha is a Sunni. That’s when she was recruited." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Richard Engel, how are you able to get an interview with a potential suicide bomber? That's pretty amazing, considering they are supposed to not let their intentions be known. Some questions: Did she say if she sees this as Sunni vs. Shia aggression, and that by killing some Shiites she is helping the Sunnis? What is the relationship with her extended family that she now lives with like? Do they support her views of revenge? Do they even know what she is doing? Quote: "It would seem that the number of women being used is increasing, and we have seen increasing numbers of women being used to kill civilians, because the women blend very well into a civilian population," Who are the women who are getting recruited? Are they mostly women without husbands and children? Are they mainly Sunni or mainly Shiite or a combination of both? What factors are leading to the increase of recruiting? I know their reasons for recruiting are because women blend easily into a crowd. But, what are the underlying factors leading to their increased recruitment?
It is a psycho response and can only be characterized as " MATYRDUMB " !!
It's a shame that after 9/11 we as american's were ready to defend our freed against terrorist who threat the very life we base that freedom on, only for it to be highjack for a hidden, possibly personal agenda.Look what's going on after 4 yrears I think it may have been better to have left well enough alone. people don't seem to remember all the military base closures in the past that cut our military so short that we look more like a joke then a serious threat. I'm a shame that our goverment would abused powers like that for personal gain. NOTE: when you have countries like Britian, Germany and France disliking the U.S because of our policies you know it's getting bad as these guys used to back us on almost anything.
Search them! why are you all SO FRIGGING STUPID. Are you clones of Bush? Like they are not incesnes already!
You all are missing the point here and are not looking at the message. the fact that she wants revenge is not because she is inhuman but because something very human is out of control: anger, hatred, and pain. No it's not right. It's down right evil. But before you go acting like you cannot understand it or talking about religious motives (which in her case their are none), look around you...look at yourselves. When was the last time you were unable to forgive someone? How often do we as americans demand blood for the sake of fulfilling "justice"? How often is it hard for us to let go of petty insults...much less the distruction of your family? It's a warning to us all that we too are capeble of incredible evil if we do not strive forgive our enemies in our own lives, when we stop trying to seek the truest good.
its wondering? why this people doing like this? infact, we cant blame them, because everything were lost on them and they are physically abuse like what was happen in abu gharib, their women were raped by the coalition, afterwards only say sorry! what if that the arab will come to USA and UK and abuse the men and women, what shall you do? common sense, you will do everything even to blow up your self.
