Cover boy 'Knut'

Posted: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 12:38 PM

Cuddly and cute, "Knut," the German polar bear cub, has made a big splash on the international media landscape.

Photos of the playful little fellow have been plastered across international newspapers, magazines, and on TVs around the globe. His first public outing at the Berlin Zoo drew over 200 journalists from around the world and German television broadcast it live.

VIDEO: Knut makes his Berlin Zoo debut on March 23.

The hype around Knut has been so enormous that the wave of extra visitors to the Berlin zoo - up to 30,000 on one recent weekend – has required the facility to employ additional staff.

Among the extra visitors was Annie Leibowitz, the celebrity photographer, who flew in from New York to take pictures.

Knut memorabilia has been flying off the shelves - from fluffy little toys to polar baby t-shirts. The first 2,500 stuffed animals that went on sale in Berlin were sold out within a week. A Berlin bank even issued a new debit card for its customers featuring a Knut motif.

Ever since his birth in December, Knut has been raised by a zoo keeper because his mother abandoned him. His situation gained global attention when an animal rights activist complained that that hand-feeding is not appropriate for polar bears and would condemn the bear to a dysfunctional life. German media interpreted the animal activist’s charge as a call for euthanasia for the cub. But zoo keepers and veterinarians alike have assured the public the bear will be fine.

So Knut may be a grown polar bear within the year, changing from a cuddly little cub to a large animal with wild instincts, but in the meantime, he will get a little more of the limelight previously enjoyed by other famous Germans like Claudia Schiffer and Heidi Klum.

Knut will appear on the cover of the German edition of Vanity Fair magazine on Thursday. The glamour magazine will feature a 16-page cover story called "I, Knut -- A World Star From Germany."

And while appearing as a star standing alone on the German cover, Knut may have to share the spotlight on an upcoming "Green Issue" of American Vanity Fair with another pin-up boy and environmental activist: Leonardo DiCaprio.

from what i have read and heard about polar bears their numbers have gone from 5000 ans some odd to 20,000 and some odd so i am confused why they need protection and by that i don't mean that we should start shooting them. But what realy gets me 9is the cry to end this little guy's life by the people trying to protect them.Am i missing something.Or are these animal lovers so far gone that they think that they are the only ones that have a say on this argument. Iwould like to say thank to the germans for saving that little bear from the people that want to save his kind.Does that make any sense, or did i miss something here ????
You mean PETA hasnt had him assassinated yet? I thought they said he was better off dead than raised by humans. How can you let this zoo traumatize him like this. The Media usually buys into most anything that comes out of their mouths...why not this one to. heh...a little over the top you say....heh.
You are right bout the numbers, but the media wont tell you this. They havent needed protecting for some time...this falls rignt in with GW. Scientists that find GW contributed to solar scale changes and earth orbit variations are shut out. But lets ask why is Mars going through the same issue with its polar ice caps melting...must it have been the 2 rovers up there...nope.
why it that after two days of this story being posted only two people have a comment to make. Where are all tree huggers on this one. Why have we not heard from the whacos at peta.this even got atached to the greenhouse gasses story. Hell al gore won an acadamy award for it, or was it just a media story, and an al gore story and not as many people are buying into it as was thought.
20,000 is still not enough. We can stop protecting these animals when the churches start paying taxes.
This isn't the type of subject people want to blog. Keep the blogosphere focused on the good stuff: blood, guts, war, racism, etc.
With the way things are going with Global Warming, Knut might be the only polar bear left after a while. He's beautiful!
You mean to tell me the activist NEVER suggested he be put to death?????? Last week that is all MSNBC and NBC wanted to report. Where is the apologies on behalf of the media?
Sean Torrington:All the numbers show is that the bears are doing fine without our getting involved. Let's just let the bears do their thing they seem to be leading the way with out humans standing in their way. they seem to be romanticaly active with out al gore and his pals wanting to use them as poster children for failure. Their numbers are growing and will continue to grow if we leave well enough alone and don't micro manage their sex life. As for churches paying taxes why not, they are making an income they should pay their fair share. (see we do agree on some things)
