Bomb technology migrating from Iran to Iraq

Despite U.S. assertions that the most lethal roadside bombs in Iraq are being imported from Iran, the U.S. military over the past year has increasingly found them being both assembled and manufactured in Iraq, officials tell NBC News.

At a briefing in Baghdad this month, U.S. officials publicly revealed for the first time what they called evidence that Iran was manufacturing explosively formed penetrators --EFPs -- a type of roadside bomb which has emerged as the biggest danger to U.S. troops here.

An intelligence analyst and explosives expert said they were being manufactured in machine shops in Iran and smuggled across the border to extremist Shiite groups. They were believed to be manufactured only in Iran, the analyst said.

This week, in the first statement of the kind, the coalition said Iraqi and U.S. forces had arrested two insurgents in an EFP workshop in a raid near Hilla south of Baghdad on February 17.

"The two were in the process of assembling EFPs," the military said.

Lt Gen. Raymond Odierno, commander of ground forces in Iraq, told NBC News this week that while the technology had initially come from Iran, it had since migrated.

"They initially started to come from Iran," said Odierno in an interview. "I think now we see some of the technologies -- some of the training -- being imported from Iran and probably being constructed here."

"I can't tell you they're exclusively coming from Iran," he said. "I will tell you that all the things, the indicators, that we have here [are] that the materials, the training and even a lot of the funding for the insurgency, for these types of technologies, are in fact coming from or being supported by the Quds force or other people from Iran."

EFP attacks on the rise
The Quds (Jerusalem) Force is an elite element of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. American officials have given conflicted accounts as to whether they believe they are acting on direct orders from Iranian leaders in the manufacture and supply of EFPs used to attack American troops here.

The U.S. military for the first time this month revealed that at least 170 U.S. troops had been killed and more than 620 wounded in EFP attacks since they saw the first one in 2004. They say EFP attacks -- which routinely kill three or four soldiers at a time -- have increased dramatically over the past year.

The distinctive feature of the bomb is a concave metal cap, usually copper. When the bomb is detonated the metal turns inward into a high-velocity ball of molten metal that can cut through a tank, experts say.

Officials say the EFPs are being machine-tooled in Iran and then smuggled across the border usually in component form. Some senior U.S. military officials, however, say although it has not been previously announced, U.S. forces have been finding an increasing number of the advanced roadside bombs being not just assembled but manufactured in machine shops here. "It (the impact) isn't as clean but they are almost as effective," one official said.

Other officials said they believed the Iraqi-made EFPs were considerably less lethal than the precision-tooled shaped charges smuggled from Iran but still a significant threat.

Iraqi officials have closed several of the border crossings with Iran to try to cut down on weapons smuggling across the border.

The U.S. military says most of the weapons are entering illegally through the official border crossings, which they say are understaffed and riddled with corruption. Smugglers use the official entry points because large parts of the border with Iran are riddled with land mines from the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, officials say.

With all the technology we have isn't there some type of devise that could be utilized at the major check points to detect explosives, etc? If these matterials are being smuggled into Iraq from Iran using the major check points someone is sleeping on the job,or turning their head for a price.Time to make changes in the security servicing these areas.
I do not believe USA saying that the weapons made outside Iraq is killing American Soldiers. When Israel bombs the hell of innocent people, does America ever complain that their F-15s and tanks, etc. are killing innocent kids and people. I think America and its' puppet in Israel are just the most corrup and insensible goverments in the world.
It's upsetting that the skills of the Iraqi people are being used to build more weapons instead of schools, hospitals, and homes. My thoughts are what will happen when the Americans and Birtish leave Iraq. Will the people building these bombs stop using them if the Americans are gone? Or will they select a new target, such as the Iraqi people who have different views on religion or politics? How can Iraq rebuild in the face of so much continued destruction? I'm concerned that those who control Iraq in the future will be the most violent elements of today.
YOUR TEXT: EFP attacks on the rise The Quds (Jerusalem) Force is an elite element of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. COMMENT: the word "conflicted" should be change to "conflicting". SEE: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/conflicted NOTE usage at bottom of entry.
THE US HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE IRANIAN INVOLVMENT IN EFPS FOR MONTHS. WHY SUCH A BIG HOOPLA ABOUT IT NOW? MAYBE BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO WAR WITH I**N SOON? i DON'T KNOW. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Islamic Iran must be destroyed, and Zorastarism restored to the Persian country, where the ancient theology originated. Islam must only be practiced in full accordance to the Qur'an, Hadith, and any other secondary Muslim commentary, on the Saudi Arabia Islamic Reservation. America never forgets: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_Embassy_Iran.gif
They should bomb Iran.. And bomb their nuclear sites when all their scientists are at the job site.. Personally.. that is an act of war and should be considered as such with a response.. If the Quds are indeed involved the leadership of Iran has to be..They are under their command.. International community needs to realize that placing rules on war just makes you an easy target for losing a war.. If the enemy doesn't follow international rules of war and plays dirty ..I say unleash your military might and whipe them out.. They hide in civilian areas..bomb the crap out of them.. You give them a means to hide and kill your men you are just plain stupid.. Usa would never be USA if they hadn't defied the rules of war against the british.. gorrilla warfare won that war.. not lining up in lines for easy pickings.. why do you think muslims bomb civilians across the globe.. because they can without even a tear from peace activists who would scream bloody murder if the USA bombed a civilian home with 3 terrorists in it.. Stop being panzies and wake up.. Japan learned to be more peaceful by getting nearly whiped off the map..perhaps the middleast needs to learn the same lesson..
If Iran providing Iraq with arms is an 'act of war', then the US has committed acts of war in South America and the MiddleEast. You know, arming rebels to over-throw a pro-communist government and all that. I see Will from Boston has spent quite some time constructing his strawmen. It would be a shame to destroy it so soon, so I'll just look on and smile.
When the American supportet the Terrorist (Ben Laden)in Afghanisthan against the Russian this was OK and now Amerika face the same in reverse and now thy don't like id.
I would have to agree with another blogger and say that, if the Quds are involved, the government is involved. That is like saying, the Navy SEALS are involved, but... we have nothing to do with their actions. That's ridiculous! In regards to our US government being corrupt, please, name one that is not. All government entities are in it for themselves. Everyone has a special interest that needs to be fulfilled. I am not saying that it is right; I am just saying that it is a fact of life that we have to deal with right now. Bad always comes with the good. Now, should we attack Iran? I think we need to demolish the nuclear plant before they enrich bomb usable material and attack us or another country. Israel is not the only country on Iran's agenda; they despise Saudi Arabia also (and this is just in the middle east). In my opinion, there is no need to kill innocent people. But, unfortunately, there is almost always collateral damage. We must also remember that the youth of Iran are becoming westernized; they are the future of Iran. Why kill off the youth that will more than likely control the government in a decade or two that will bring their western assimilation with them? The youth changed the government in the late 70's and early 80's, this body of youths will be their renaissance and their movement towards democracy and peace. Lets all meet again right here in 12 years and see. Their government will change again!
with the technology we have, this country can come up with an instrument that can see right through these objects and detect them 100 to 150 yards before the tank or the troops gets there. Why waste more money on sending more troops when we can spare the life of those already there by concentrating on these sort of technological tools that are beneficial in winning this war.
Majid can move back to the great country that he is from if he thinks the American government is so corrupt and insensable! If the American government is so bad, why does he chose to live in Los Angeles...why not live in your home country with it's superb government!??
There are many ways to support or denouce something~ overtly covertly, directly indirectly, ect... It is clear that at this time Iran's covert support of insurgents in Iraq is indirectly resulting in the death of US servicemen. It is also clear Iran's primary interest in nuclear fuel is limited to its use in a weapons program. Both are threats to the safety of our service men and women, the latter is also a direct threat to the safety of our very being, mom dad and baby bobby. Some may argue that North Korea's nuclear program poses a larger threat but I don't recall 9/11 images and video of North Koreans celebrating (Sure I know there is very little media in the country, but one could expect a couple high-fives at the DMZ or at the least some demoralizing statement by the government), truth is North Korea could care less about anything other than MONEY and RESPECT. On the otherhand Radical Islamic nations seem to have a different agenda, the biggest in my opinion is blaming everyone else for their hardship and relishing in the misfortunes of others. Honestly they remind me of L.A. street gangs, killing for the smallest slight, demanding respect but giving and earning none, weak thugs hiding behind the morality of others. It will be a terrible day when a nuclear weapon is detonated on US soil followed by a brief miniature WWWIII that Radical Islam and a great deal of the middle east won't survive.
USA is selling weapons to every country in the world, the US-Goverment has good relationship to. That means selling weapons is crime, special crime of the USA. USA has attacked Iraque based on business reason. The USA goverment did not prepare there miltar tanks and Hummer in a technical qualified way and the poor american soldiers are paying for it very hard. I hope all this trouble in Iraque opens the eyes of the USA citizen, it like and vote for a more honest goverment the next election. Good luck!
I have to agree with Will from Boston. I spent 24 years in the US Air Force from 1971 to 1995 and during my time in Europe the peoples of Europe and England referred to the US as the super power pansies. You don't know how much I had to bite my tongue while serving overseas. Countries all over the world were taking chunks out of the USA's behind with our administration, I.E. Jimmy Carter sitting back and watching our country become weaker. It is about time that we flexed our might for what is right. We have a saying in the US military "You Mess with The Eagle, you get the Claw!" Oh, by the way Sean from Torrington CT, what have you done for your country lately? I served my country and now I serve my community as a police officer.
I say nuke Iraq and Iran, it will save lives. The bomb is a deterent to war. We have it,let's use it. And be done. We will not plunder their lands, they can have it back. But we should wack them good, one time, like an evil stepchild.
