Pointing a shaky finger at Iran

"No recording devices permitted" read the invitation to the briefing on Iran. At the Coalition Press Office, it wasn’t called Iran, or a briefing on accusations that Iran is helping attack U.S. soldiers in Iraq. In the language of international accusations, the topic of the press briefing was "subject matter related to a neighboring country." Everyone knew what it was though.

The U.S. administration for months has accused Iran of sending weapons and technology across the border to be used in attacks on American forces in Iraq. It promised to reveal evidence backing up those charges but officials weren't comfortable that they had enough evidence they could present publicly without jeopardizing their sources.

So on Sunday nearly 50 journalists were packed into a crowded briefing room in Baghdad to listen to officials whom we weren't allowed to identify, talking about things they weren’t allowed to fully explain.

The senior U.S. military official told us he should be referred to as a "senior Coalition defense official" rather than an "American official." After journalists pressed the point that accusations this serious were being made by officials who wouldn't divulge their nationalities, he agreed that he and his two colleagues could be referred to as "U.S. officials."

‘Growing body of evidence’
He told us that the use of the deadliest form of roadside bomb known as EFP's - explosively formed penetrators - had nearly doubled last year. And he said there was a "growing body of evidence pointing to Iranian supply of EFPs to Iraqi extremist groups."

That evidence, according to a U.S. intelligence official at the briefing, included machine-tooled parts used in the roadside bombs. They had reason to believe they had come from machine shops in Iran and hadn't found any being made with such precision in Iraq, he said.

The official moderating the briefing said the intelligence analyst was the reason for the secrecy. He said it would be dangerous for the analyst, an Iran expert, and his sources to be publicly shown or identified.

Some of the weapons the U.S. believes are being smuggled from Iran were displayed on tables. The de-activated EFP looked almost harmless -- a metal tube the size of a large paint can with a copper liner. When filled with explosives though and detonated by remote control, it turns into a molten slug that pierces armored vehicles, often killing three or four soldiers at a time.

U.S. military officials have talked about them before, but not in this detail. The official at the briefing told us they have killed 170 coalition troops and wounded 620 of them since they first started being used in 2004.

On another table were more than a dozen tail-fins from Iranian mortars marked with the date of manufacture, some as recent as 2006. According to the explosives expert, they are identifiably Iranian because the tail-fins and the mortars are a single piece.

According to the U.S., but hard to verify
We were ordered to leave everything outside except a pen and notebook when we went into the briefing. Shortly after it started, my pen failed. An Iraqi journalist gave me his - he wasn't using it. Several of the Iraqi journalists got up and left before the briefing was over.

That's the difficult thing about this story -- without having access to information the U.S. government says it can't give us, it's impossible to evaluate the accusations that these weapons are coming only from Iran in operations authorized by the Iranian government. It's particularly difficult because the U.S. doesn't speak to Iran – so it uses other countries –- and the media to send its messages.

Does anyone remember the hell Clinton went through because he lied about cheating on his wife? We have Cheney, and his hand puppet Bush, attempting to take over the world and no one in Congress is doing ANYTHING about it! Have we become that apathetic or just ingnorant? Putin hit it on the head the other day when he pointed to the U.S. attempting to force it's will on practically everyone in the world. Diplomacy is a term Cheney knows nothing about. Why did we not talk with Iran in 2003 when we had the chance? Hell, even Nixon spoke with China. The U.S. convienently labels every government that does not follow its directives as 'terrorist' or 'illegitimate' and then uses those labels as an excuse not to negotiate and instead bring military pressure. The U.S. under Bush is the 'rogue' nation...who can argue that point when we throw International Law out the window? Disgusting.
How will the friends of Israel handle this?
america just needs a reason to attack countries tht it doesnt like, and they r trying to cook up a reason to attack iran, just like they did for iraq. what ever happened to the so called "weapons to MASS destruction?"
Was our information faulty and Bush invaded Iraq on "convenient lies? I don't think this is totally true. For months we tried to go into Iraq before we decided to invade them. While all this red tape was being gone through, Hussein had opportunity to remove weapons of mass destruction and send them out of the country. The fact is the world is a better place without someone like Hussein. Now lets fast forward to Iran. While invading them is not the best option or a popular one, we have got to realize that this country is on a collision course with a major war. They won't back down and if we do, our security could be at risk. Any country that wakes up and shouts death to "America" or states that Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth, should not be ignored. Iran's government may not be directly involved with the weapons found in Iraq but you better wake up and realize that indirectly they either are funneling money and weapons to the insurgents or they are making it very easy for this to happen. Come on, main stream media, take your dislike for the Bush administration out of the mix and report to your readers the facts. What shaky finger? Maybe it's the shaking reporting.
The pentagon photos of these IFD components are supposed to show that they are manufactured in Iran. Why is the date in the Christian calendar and not the Muslim calendar or even in Farsi to say the least?
This administration has lost all credibility. If I was on the Titanic and this administration told me it was sinking...I wouldn't believe them.
The lying dogs of war are at work again, plotting war against Iran ala. against Iraq in 2003! Unjustly imposed wars will always end in defeat for the invaders. Russia in Afghanistan, the US in Vietnam/Iraq, Germany/Italy/Japan (The old Axis of Evil) in World War II, to give a few examples. Why can't we learn from history and stop this unjust bloodletting? Truly, blessed are the peacemakers. Warmongers and deceivers, STOP going to Church. You worship in vain!!
Why believe the Adminstration now,of the Military they are committed to the script given to them by the White House Staff. Half truths anf propaganda they contiue to want the country to hear. None of whom have been in Harms Way as military men and women.
I'm a little confused here. Why are we not talking about other weapons used to kill American's and Iraqys in this war. Weapons that are know to come from Russia, China, and some produced here in this country, and yes somehow sold in the black market an wind up in Iraq in the insergents hands. I quess it's because we're only willing to pin-point and accuse Iran at this point, and not hold the rest of the industrial community responsible for producing and selling this weapons used for only one purpose. We should be going after all those that sell these weapons, but then we would be faced with the question what are we doing there in the first place, with the weapons we make and produce ourselve's. It's time to take this county out of Iraq and hold our President and Vice President resposible for this mess in the first place.
Whatever, dudes, whatever!
It is imperitive that we consider why those in your story can't speak freely. Is it because the media has painted our administration and our Iraq effort as an effort in futility and bullying? You have no idea what is going on but more importantly the american people have no idea what is going on because the media only wants to show us the negatives. These people hate us, they kill innocents by tieing a bomb on there chest and blame it on the US. You write a blog with an obvious underlying message of the administration as paranoid, incompetent, and possibly looking for more war. You in the media have created these fears. Sad that you don't want to win. Sad that you are ashamed of our status of Super Power. Sad that we rely on you to communicate what is simply your reality. Bias in the media? Naaaah
I think the people of this country need to defend themselves against anyone who kills there people intentionaly. This includes the Bush Administration and anyone in the military who puts the citizens of this country in harms way under lies and acusations so that big business can keep making money and donating money. After Iraq i dont think the Bush Administration should not acuse any goverment of anything without a smoking gun. Like finding campaign finance money of Ajmadianjan in the hands of the bomb makers. A bomb being made in Iran by an Iranian and smuggled into Iraq does not warrant all the people of the country being bombed and killed. Nor does a US person diserve to die for making a bomb or missle in a US defense factory. US made bombs and missles have beed sold to many people around the world and killed many people, that does not mean i or you deserve to die.
unfortunately we were deceived a;ready about the WMD and Iraq/Al-quada ties that got us into this war. I'm a little gun-shy about beleiving any "evidence" this administration has about anything.
Iran would supply weapons to the shites, the coalition is being attacked by Sunnis
Ya, I like the complete turn around on this. Four years ago we were to believe the Iraq was a hairs breadth away from manufacturing advanced WMD's and modes of delivery for them, capable of hitting targets anywhere in the Middle East and threatening American sovereignty. Now we're supposed to believe Iraq is incapable of manufacturing a steel tube packed with explosives and having a copper cone at one end with out Iranian technology and support. Not to mention the mortars are marked in English not Farsi, and are of a non Soviet caliber, in spite of the fact Iranian equipment is supplied by Russia. Some were also reportedly seized within no more than 9 days of manufacture. Some mortars had Sep 2006 manufacture dates and were seized in the middle of Iraq on Sep 9, 2006. It's fabricated all the way, welcome to Iraq all over again.
WMD? Fool me once- shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Enough is enough. Fire Bush and Cheney.
When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, didn't the CIA set up an arms smugling operation in Peshawar to arm the Mujahedeen? Whay would it be wrong to return the favor now and arm the patriot iraqui fighters so they have a better chance to kill invaders?
The War Mongers in Washington are an illegal group who are bringing down the moral standards of our government and creating conditions that put our people, military, and nation at risk. Time to get rid of the whole bunch. Don't forget the American Enterprise Institute and that idiot Paul Wolfowitz.
Let's see. One of main reporters of the original story on this was Michael R Gordon of the N Y Times (who along with departed Judith Miller posted the infamous Aluminum Tube pieces on Iraq). Is this con-incidence or not? I don't think so. P.T. Barnum had a nice phrase for this that most of us already know., but I for one an not taking the bait a second time. Also today General Peter Pace was very skeptical of linking Iran govenment with the newer IEDs but admitting however that they were likely coming from Iran. Many sources also have linked outside weaponry to the Saudis as well. We forget that this is primarily a civil war and is pitting Sunnis agains Shites and there WILL be outside influencers in this for many and sundried reasons. Let's not however get suckered into the last "go to war proposition" that came about from faulty and uninformed intelligence (or lack therof) and was used by various groups only to promote their agendas.
Iran is Sunni, they are being attacked by Shites
This is so nuts! Does Bush believe that the American people have forgotten that there were NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION in Iraq? Does he think our nation has forgotten that he manufactured evidence to get us there? HAVE the American people forgotten? If they have, I'm more scared of this ignorance than any of the terrorism claims that Bush has trotted out to pull our nation into submission.
The Discovery Channel program "Future Weapons" showed within the last two weeks, detailed construction techniques for the very same cylindrical shaped charge weapon you described above, with concave copper, and they showed how to operate them. The programs bombs looked identical to the ones shown on the news last night.
I suspect that these officers were just following orders that ultimately originated in the civilian part of the chain of command. If so, then I don't blame them for insisting on anonymity; at least they have a chance to avoid the same fate as Colin Powell. When this so called "Iranian connection" is revealed, as it surely will be, to be just another Bush-Cheney disinformation campaign, these officers won't have to watch their personal credibility get destroyed in the process.
Dear Jane Arraf, You underestimate the intelligence and vivid memories adult Americans possess concerning the Mullahcracy that directs Iran's foreign policy. In the United States nothing is forgotten, when recalling the rift that has existed between the U.S. and Iran, precipitated by the 1979 hooligan take over of the American's internationally recognized embassy in Tehran. Iran has been self implicated as a realistic threat to free expression, for nearly thirty years. Thus far journalist like yourself have been relatively successful in using the blame card, in an attempt to defuse what has been a long time coming. Iran's collision course with the ideals of the American Revolution. Based on the Iranian theocracy model, a new yet similar attack against freedom by fundamentalist Islam, was laid-out by al-Qaida on September 11, 2001. This old brand of subversive fundamentalist Islamic theology, must be factored in, along with the Iranian machined parts blamed for killing U.S. personal in Iraq. It is this Islamic theological threat, with its total disregard for the will of the international community represented by the United Nations, that has led to the diplomatic pressure currently being applied against Iran. Al-Qaida the spiritual offspring of the Iranian Revolution, has initiated the alarm in the world community, with threats detailed in the Online website History of Jihad.org. It is Iran who is shaking in its shoes, surrounded by freedom loving nations who have no desire in being bullied, by any nuclear threat, or historical distortion propagated Islamic theocracy. Regards, Arturo Jabra'il Sancho
I believe that Iran is correct by saying that the USA has always been fabricating their stories. A simple example is the invasion of Iraq. Did they found WMD in Iraq? Was it justified to invade Iraq with their argument of WMD? They will make a bigger mistake by fabricating this too, (Iran supplying the insurgents with wapons) Is Vietnam not an example of American mistakes? Probably a lesson not learned.
Same kind of b.s. we heard just before we were lied into invading Iraq. These guys don't even possess the intelligence (pun intended) to use a different approach than the one they used before to get us suckered into the quagmire in Iraq. Remember, these are the guys who tried to help us imagine what LA would look like after Iraq nuked it. Iran IS the source of all evil currently in the oepen-air mental institution of the Middle East, but let's not let Bush& The Gang Who Couldn't Make War Straight lie us into another debacle!
I spent a bit of time in Iran in the 70s, just before the hostage taking in 79. I also have spent time in other Mideast areas since then. The idea that Iran is involved in terrorist activities has long been established by reliable agencies outside the US and is not in dispute. What is in question is the honesty and relialbity of this administration. Bush et al have cried wolf too many times to be taken at their word ever again. Maybe the Israelies or some other group could verify the accusations and be believed. Bush and his fellow travelers are no longer seen as trustworthy.Iran probably is involved, but Bush and his minions will not be the last word this time. Thank you. EvW
hey, i have an idea. if we dont agree with someone, lets just make up some crap so we can blow them up! great foreign relations policy. this (war with Iran) ahs been a long time coming and planned. check out Project for a New American Century. this was in place since the late 90's at the latest, probably before. so, one day after the whitehouse sponsored PR stunt to finger the Iranian governemnt, the chief of the joint chiefs contradicts their findings, brilliant. before the propaganda cranks up again, yes it was a contradiction. tony snow said unequivocally the u.s. had proof the weapons were tied to the highest places in the iranian government...now, maybe not so much. for those who say we have to support the troops who are fighting for our freedom i say two things: 1. they are not fighting for our freedom. no threat to our country existed in Iraq or Iran. none. it has been proved. 2. i do support the troops...thats why i want them to come home and quit being used as fodder by the elite in our country.
C'mon NBC you wouldn't report it to be true if it said "Made in Iran" on it and was signed by Ahamadinejad himself. Because that would mean agreeing with a claim made by the Bush administration and we all know thats not going to happen.
Jane - are the British in the south or US forces in Kurdistan being targeted as well? The story reads "targeting US forces in Iraq" - but is this largely resulting from the targeting of specific US forces in metro Baghdad? It would seem that the IED issue would be even more significant if it impacted all coalition forces all around the country.
Seems to me that shaky evidence has been trumped up before...even the "top" US General, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff doesn't acknowledge the direct connection between state sponsored Iranian terrorism in Iraq. But just because we don't have ample "concrete" evidence yet, doesn't mean it isn't happening. I think more energy needs to be invested in finding out the true creditability of these claims before more US forces are put in harms way in a conflict with Iran. And we should probably analyze what the real threat from Iran is? Is it funding of terrorists and insurgent groups...they have been doing that for years! Or is it their push for nuclear technology? How far is this country willing to go before we are fighting with anyone the White House has beef with?
Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said U.S. forces hunting down militant networks that produced roadside bombs had arrested Iranians and that some of the material used in the devices were made in Iran. “That does not translate that the Iranian government per se, for sure, is directly involved in doing this,” Pace told reporters in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. “What it does say is that things made in Iran are being used in Iraq to kill coalition soldiers.”
How could anyone believe this present Administration after all that has happened is beyond me! And how could anybody believe the current military spokesmen who's identities remain hidden regarding such an important issue? I wish I had a buck for every lie and cover-up they have been caught up in the past four years! Better yet, I wish I had a buck for all the lies and cover-ups that have NOT been discovered! Please stop the madness BEFORE it is too late! The potential use of nuclear munitions on nuclear facilities is BEYOND insane!
And the media, once again helps the powerfull rich elite that started the Iraq fiasco, to once again spread BS to the masses. OOPS, should have said, gullible masses. They believe it. Hell, some people STILL believe Saddam and Iraq were directly involved in 911! The media IS to blame. Just reporting what "government sources said" without making anybody accountable does nothing but embolden this corrupt regime's antics. It is funny. MSNBC, and other news organizations complain about how biased FoxNews is, and yet they do the exact same things as Fox. Just look at MSNBC's own message boards! One to three people run roughshod over everyone, and if anyone dares to even attempt to give them some of their own medicine back? You are permanently banned. It's like this people. Media, including MSNBC are corporate entities with their eyes on the $$ just like politicians. The more they make, the more they want. The owners of these media corporations MAKE government policy, then pretend to be shocked to report it. It's a helluva scam!
It is bizarre to live in a time during which Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini has as much or more credibility with the American public than Presidential Press Secretary Tony Snow. My God, what have these fools wrought?
I think there is no evidence that Iran is is helping Iraqis to attack United States solders in Iraq. This is all media is creating this problems. Iran is morally supporting Iraq because they are belong to the same religion, as United States is 100% supporting Israel. I think United States is loosing this unpopular war in Iraq, now they are blaming Iranian government for their own failure in Iraq.United States would not have been invaded Iraq in the first place, President Bush has made one of the biggest mistake.!!!!
What a crock of poop! Y'know, if anyone from the "U.S." ever tells anything to anyone else directly, we'd know who was 'really' responsible for V. Plame's outing, Iraqi involvement, Iranian involvement, the WTC bombings, where J. Hoffa is, who shot Kennedy and probably why such a stink was made over B. Clinton's personal affairs yet G.W. Bush's lies to America smell like our first morning coffee. If Iran did help Iraq, who cares? Why not take care of our troops by bringing 'em home. If we start from here (USA) we'd surely see who is shooting whom from a safe vantage point and we'd ba able to know we are not the perpetrators of all this violence. After all, we aren't, are we??? Hey~here's an idea! Let's ask Dick and Condi! They ALWAYS tell it like it is and never pass the buck!
we cannot, should not, let this @ss of a president keep lying to us, (lol, my 7 year old kid is more coherent than him when he speaks) lets see, everything about Iraq was absolutely WRONG!!! ... ehm, why is anyone paying any attention to this administrations claims??
Good work, Jane!
I don't know who or what to believe anymore.
I am not sure how long the border is between Iraq & Iran, but it would seem to me that somehow that border could be monitored, whether it be night vision cameras, drones, helicopters, or troops. It has to be coming in by pack animal, trucks, pickups, or cars. If it were me making the delivery, it would be at night. If by a vehicle, it almost has to be a road. By pack animal could be anywhere. The next question is how many people cross back & fourth daily. If it is few, the next thing I would do is plant the very devices Iran has sent across the border, and/or mines. Detonation of those planted devices, followed by a very large explosion would almost guarantee you have eliminated a load of Iranian weapons, and prove that is the source of those weapons and devices. Probably, it's not that easy. The very thing that currently bothers me about the theory of the source, is our history of flawed intellingence.
USSR may also be involved
Here goes Bush again...lying, fabricating, disrespecting the American people and democracy...the whole Bush gang should be investigated for treason for starting the Iraq war and trying to start another war without evidence of a just cause
I trust those picture of the supposed Irani manufactured EFP's about as mch as I now trust those drawings of Iraqi mobile labs Colin Powell used in his presentation to the U.N.(I always wondered why, with all our spy satellite technology we never. saw photos of those, even though we can apparently photograph and identify Osama when he comes out of his cave. We saw photos of the mobile labs only after they were determined to be totally harmless, taken from the ground up close. Those weapons photos shown by unidentified officials could have been anything, exhibited by anybody, for the sake of promoting an agenda that gives me nightmares, such as waking up tomorrow and finding we have attacked another country on the same shaky grounds that we attacked Iraq, except that this time it will be far more costly in blood, money and what is left of other counties' respect for us around the world. I find it particularly peculiar that General Pace was not especially impressed by the "evidence" of direct Irani involvement in the importation into and use in Iraq of the EFP's. I heard one report that he didn't even know the presentation in Baghdad was to be made. Idon't know if this is true-I haven't had time to research it-but either way this whole scenerio is dismayingly familiar and equally tragic.
The only sad part about this is Americans never seem to want hard evidence and seem to swallow almost any ridiculous claim rather than have the guts to stand up and say "This is just more bull...., like the WMD's used to go to war in Iraq." It's like Bill Mahar said...."Americans are not stupid, just really slow>"
Finally proof. The only problem with it is the left will only believe it when it serves their political interests. Or maybe if Iran actually has a news conference admitting their involvment. I mean, already in an effort to once again make the administration look bad the idea of bad intelligence is brought out. Even though the truth is there is Iranian involvement. I can't wait to see what happens next.
The Iranian leaders know and condone the use of lethel weapons. This makes them as quilty as the users. When is America going to stop being P.C. and take care of the threat? As usual, every hting is done half way.
themajority of Americansarenot buying into this, the administrationhas lied before and look where we are. When things get to hot for the administration to handle they another hot sopt or issue. wake yp people by the time their are through this war will escalate far beyond our imaginations and it will be too late.
How can anyone believe the Bush administration at this point? They have been wrong about everything, from associating Saddam Hussein with 9/11 to predicting how U.S. troops would be greeted as liberators in Iraq. These aren't just honest mistakes; these blunders border on incompetence at best; corruption at worst. I have zero faith in President Bush and can only wait until 2008 when he's out of office.
