Iranian kidnapping – an ‘embarrassing incident’

The strange saga of an Iranian diplomat abducted in Baghdad took another turn Wednesday with the revelation that Iraqi security officers possibly acting on orders from a rogue government department had abducted him.

The diplomat, assigned to the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad, was taken at gunpoint on Sunday by kidnappers wearing Iraqi security uniforms.

Iran's accusation that the United States was to blame has threatened to raise tension between the two countries even further.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the Iraqi government was holding four Iraqi military officers in connection with the kidnapping. He told NBC News in an interview that they were investigating whether the men acted on their own or were acting on orders from government officials.

"The government is determined to punish those responsible if they were part of any government entity," Zebari said." I don't want to jump to any conclusions but the type of the operations, the people who were arrested by the security forces, give us some doubts. There may be entities acting on their own."

Incident ‘not helpful’ for diplomatic relations
Zebari said the involvement of Iraqi military men in the kidnapping was particularly unfortunate since Iraq has been trying to convince other countries to send their diplomats here.

"It is a very embarrassing incident," he said. "On the one hand we are trying to establish a diplomatic presence here in Iraq by our neighbors, by other countries. These incidents are not helpful."

Jalal Sharafi, the Iranian embassy's second secretary, was abducted by gunmen wearing Iraqi uniforms and holding Ministry of Defense ID, Iraqi and Iranian officials said. Iraqi officials said the men may have been fired from the ministry but still retained the credentials.

Zebari said he believed the diplomat was alive. He said U.S. officials he had met with had assured him that the United States was not involved in the abduction. The Iraqi government has previously protested the arrests of several Iranians with diplomatic credentials by U.S. forces in northern Iraq.

U.S.- Iranian tension
The United States has accused Iran of involvement in attacks on U.S. forces here. Asked whether he believed that was the case, Zebari told NBC he would not rule it out.

"Really I have no hard evidence, but I wouldn't discount it at the same time," he said. He said he had raised the issue numerous times with Iranian officials, including as recently as Tuesday, stressing they could not engage in attacks on American forces on Iraqi soil.

Zebari said he was hoping to widen a planned conference in Baghdad of neighboring countries to include the United States and European countries. If the U.S. participated it would be sitting down with Iran, with which it has no diplomatic relations.

Has anyone noticed a possible coorelation between the ratcheted up tensions with Iran and the recent losses of our helicopters?
You're all buncha idiots if you think this is for anything other than OIL!
The debacle in Iraq started the day Bush opened his mouth and started lying. The problem with war-mongers is that they are all "arm-chair" warriors with no combat experience, but love to play Army by sending young American boys and girls to die for their games. This administration is full of arm-chair warriors. Any real infantryman with combat experience knows what the U.S. is capable of, and I am one of them.
I say we send over the death squads from Philly to end this war. We avg. more killings per day than Baghdad. Go Birds!!
I have No sympathy for Iran who kidnapped Americans back in the 70's. They want to play with 2 standards - one for themselves and one for the rest of the world and Tolerance only for themselves. - from the Holy City of Albany
How is fighting in Iraq keeping anyone safe? Hey what happened to ole Osama Bin and Afghanistan? Did the US just ball games? Why arent there 10,000 troops sweeping the Paki mountains but are instead standing around in downtown Bag dad? What gives?
Its a shame that all of the governments of this world can only talk shit on each other and not have the balls to sit down and really talk about there differences. We are all human beings living on this earth and instead of killing our children and innocent people to get attention we should be working on making this world a better place for all of those who live on this earth,we are all human beings know matter what your race or religion. We the people have a voice, and a way in numbers for thier are more of us than there are governments and its time we all have a say in our and our childrens future.Let your government know how you as a person feel about whats going on in this world because we are all a part of it.
It strikes me as ironinc that some, blinded by partisan politics or rooted hatred for the country that provides the very liberties exercised in posting on this site, can condemn us for something you know nothing about. The story was reported by an Arabic, or Persian?, individual who clearly has a bias in her journalisitic "integrity." Bottom line, if the article is to be taken at face value, this individual was detained on suspicion of activities against the sovreign nation of Iraq. The US denises involvement. There is no preliminary evidence indicating the contrary. Don't use it as a forum to express your spiteful attitiudes towards our freedoms. Rather comment on the validity of the content of the report.
Bunch of mudslingers on here.
We are infact fighting against Al-qedea in Iraq who do you think are blowing up both sides in Iraq its Al-qedea but Al-qedea would rather have you think that it sectarian violence because Iran Gov. is Al-quedea People havent seen the truth this whole time. Iran and syria have been stoking sectarian violence in Iraq since Sadam had been cought. Think back 1983 when Iran was resposible for killing 220 US Marines and when more then half of the 911 hijackers went to Iran before the 9-11 attacks now they get a chance to kill more US soldiers and they are gearing up for nuke warfare or should i say suicide nuke warfare Iran is infact Al-qeda and until the the Dems open their eyes that have been blinded by hate for Bush we are in deep fudge stop Iran now or else.
Yikes! This level of discourse is appalling. Almost all of you are illustrating the very decline of American character and good sense that you are complaining about!
Aaron, im embarassed too. im embarassed that our young people are sacrificing thier lives to give a dung heap like you the freedom to spew so much bull. do us all a favor and do some educating on history. past and present with the physco elements we are dealing with now, and have been since i was a child. educate yourself before you open your pie hole.....yeah?
I laughed when the iranians were outraged by the treatment of their "ambassadors" in iraq. They murdered and kidnapped official U.S. embassy personal but now they think we should give immunity to their shi- disturbers who are wreaking havoc and smuggling weapons to incite more death in iraq.
While suspicious of my govt's many unhanded activities, there are other elements in this conflict hoping to stoke the frictions (see mosque blasts). This could also possibly be their attempt to inflame US vs Iran into armed conflict. We're being played.
Of course Iran is involved on all levels in Iraq! Don't forget that most of the political leaders of today's Iraq were in exile in iran while sadaam butchered their collueges. What the hell did the US do then? Left them to die, thats what. In my opinion (i know such people personaly) Iran has more cultural, religious and many other ties with the Iraq than some western country like the US. Its funny when they talk about "foreign fighters" in iraq. I have a question, what Iraqi city in general Casey from?
if all you people would worry more about whats happening here in the united states we all would be better off
If there is democracy in the world and every one in the world have one vote to select one person to be nail to the cross it will be Bush in a land slide
I feel certain cable news networks (and FOX) are pushing over-the-line commentaries and criticisms of the government and various issues it faces in the world. Every single news story is exaggerated and spun in a cynical manner, brainwashing those who watch for too long. Everything is blown out of proportion. While there are many things our government or its people have done wrong, look at any of these Middle-Eastern regimes and peoples. They go out of their way to embarrass the U.S. while we have let things slide for decades. Its high time that we dealt them a heavier hand.
Its about time we started treating these dam people for axactly what they are animals. They drag our soldiers threw the streets cut off their heads without a care in the world. Its time we took the gloves off. These people from the towns want to kill our soldiers, then we take the men from that town line them up and shoot them in front of the women and children and tell them that's what happens when you screw with us. Funny the germans never had problems like this when they were in control of a country.
The only thing I know I am living in the best country of the world, with all liberties , rights, and opportunities needed to full feel all your expectation as a human. I was born in Cuba in a dictatorship regimen and I know what freedom mean and Mr Johnson is the kind of people that embarrassed the honor and patriot effort of the american soldiers.
The Iranians have staged this abduction just so that they can gain more political influence in iraq and discredit the coalition. Has it occurred to anyone how much of a religious hold that Tehran and its religious government have on the Shiite population of Iraq? Come on get a brain people. All Iran would have to do is get some of the Iraqi uniforms which they would have no problem doing. Then they would have to stage a raid and then just go an hide somewhere so that the United States can be discredited once more. Following that, Iran will become more deliberate in their attacks and supplying of terrorism in Iraq. So why would Iran want to do that? Well come on now. The President of Iran (couldnt spell his name to save my life) has declared that it is his goal to rebuild and expand the Persian Empire. Sounds like enough motive to me.
It all started since the war began, the innocents were kidnapped and executed, I don't know what aaron has guzzled in a war torn nation.
Horses Mouth say's: To One and All. They should be Paraded Around the streets..as Spy's captured..showing the Common Folks there, there Intentions...and let aljuzera Television do the dirty work in the Opposite manner as they have been doing to all the nations that came together to help these people have a choice in the nation and city government. Instead of being dictated too from some so called Holy Pulpit behind the curtain..and there PUPPIT like the Iranian President. He's throwed so much Dirt and Lies, plus Mistrust, even the majority of practicle thinking people there can't believe this GUY. But do they have a VOICE? well some think they do..LIKE aron Johnson hehehe. What better way to Create confussion-mistrust-hate-ignorance..of FACTS is to Pit Two ends against the middle. Please people..while your looking in one direction..the actuall slingers of maheim, are enjoying invokeing the name of America.
I find it pretty amazing when the U.S. warns Iran to stop meddling in Iraq's affairs. Who did the ultimate meddling in Iraq by invading it ? The US is doing evrything in it's power to provoke Iran. Though the controlled lapdog media would have you think the opposite. That Iran is all of a sudden this horrible threat. The US WANTS war with Iran. And all it will take is another "Gulf of Tonkin" type incident or false flag terror attack to give the neocons their ultimate dream scenario. No matter if it wrecks the US economy. Logic and reason has never had a place with the current band of criminals in power.
You got to be kidding me, if people in the mideast think the U.S. had any hand in the kiddnapping of some iranian diplomat. I think the U.S. has better things to do then that, like keeping the troops alive and making sure things are stable in iraq so they can leave there. Iran is no inoccent country. the over ran the us embassy and took U.S. dimplomats hostage for 444 days, plus this is a country that supports terrorist groups. i feel bad for this diplomate for has happened to him and the corrpution that plagues the iraqi government. But atleast least reserve some judgement and try to find this person, before he gets harmed or even worse
Aaron Johnson's "Negropotty and deathsquads" remarks was obviously a reference to John Negroponte, the current deputy secreatary of state I think. He was recently the National Intelligence Director. The deathsquads were a reference to the war in Latin America involing the contra, Hondurasetc. when CIA backed deathsquads had free reign. It's true. "Substantial evidence subsequently emerged to support the contention that Negroponte was aware that serious violations of human rights were carried out by the Honduran government, but despite this did not recommend ending U.S. military aid to the country. Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, on September 14, 2001, as reported in the Congressional Record, aired his suspicions on the occasion of Negroponte's nomination to the position of UN ambassador: Based upon the Committee's review of State Department and CIA documents, it would seem that Ambassador Negroponte knew far more about government perpetrated human rights abuses than he chose to share with the committee in 1989 or in Embassy contributions at the time to annual State Department Human Rights reports.[3] So Aaron Johnson was right....... Maybe you people should turn off Fox News and become better informed before condemning him...
Isn't it ironic that the U.S. that is meddling in Iraq by occupying the country with 140,000 soldiers now complains that the Iranians are meddling in Iraq by sending in a few Diplomats and giving Iraqi Shiite some weapons to drive out the invading army. I wonder if when the U.S. was providing weapons to Bin Laden during the Afghan war whether it considered itself to be unjustified meddling in the internal affairs of a foreign country. Oh sorry hypocrisy is not a concept Americans understand.
Brian Why don't the american Army find the ammo bunkers and blow them back to russia; Iran;and any where else sso we can keep our troops safe. For them to be able to shoot down our Helicopters and plant dead bodies with bombs. Can't we find their ammo bunker if we take care of that than we will have control again. thanks for letting me get this off my chest. VIET-NAM VETRAN
Steve in NY you are an idiot. Your weak and a traitor that spews off at the mouth not having any kind of educational point. Your probly a flamming homosexual that hates anything with moral substance, get out if your that unhappy with our country. GO TO FRANCE you sissy.
Those of you bashing Aaron obviously have never heard of the "School for the Americas" near Atlanta where we not only train American death squads but also train foriegn death squads. They got so notorious they had to change their name, but still operate. You also obviously have never heard of the "Northwoods papers" where we (America) calmly discussed killing some American soldiers and blaming it on Cuba so we could attack them; luckily cooler heads prevailed and we didn't. Remember the Maine. Calling someone you disagree with, names just shows your immaturity. My point to all this is that while America is a good country to live in we are not lily white; we do many of the same things we accuse others of. Just before the Gulf war Amb. April Glaspie, on orders from the Bush Sr. white house, told Saddam that if he attacked Kuwait the US would not interfere; he did attack 9 days later and the rest is history. I'm not saying Saddam was a good guy but we did bag him. I agree with Aaron; I am now ashamed of my country. We attacked a sovereign nation (Iraq) without provocation (there were no WMD's and Iraq was being contained)for ulterior motives. Years ago I served my country also and my America wouldn't do that.
how is it that you have no new blogs on this story for 24 hours yet clain time and space constrains as the reasons that some of the blogs do not get in. I know that I have personally sent 3
oh yes... the Iranians are being abused and we only kill civilians in Iraq... when will we put an end to this media crap...
The Iranians would love to go to war with the US, however we don't have enough shower shoes to go around. This is how they fight: With their slippers. Between Iran and Syria, and in comparison, Iraq would be a walk in the park. We need to get to the root of the problem, which is: Iran, Syria, Hamas, and Hezbolla.
Folks, you need to locate the truth about what went on in Central America when Mr. Negroponte was there and then you can understand where Aaron Johnson is coming from. The truth can be very painful to those who believe the lie.
Any possibility we can petition to have the citizenship of Aaron Johnson and people like him revoked. They complain and complain never lifting a finger to help the situation. Instead they worsen the situation with their unsupported "Facts". Even if I were to assume that Americans are committing atrocities I would not care, the other side does much worse. Does anybody still remember 9/11, now thats and atrocity. I am ashamed at my generations lack to do whatever is necessary to win the war. Our grandparents succesfully defeated Germany and Japan by making tough decsions. There thought process is that war is hell and you got to do what you gotta to do!
Look, we're dealing with a death cult in Iran whose leaders actually believe an 8th Century child Imam is going to miraculously reappear out of a well and lead Islam to worldwide victory--all of this by 2008. These people are crazy, and they are already in an undeclared war with the US, routinely killing our soldiers. Moreover, Iran supports worldwide terror more than any other nation--just look at Hamas and Hizbollah--and they routinely threaten the destruction of Israel and the US. We are fighting the wrong war--the real enemy is IRAN. Sooner ot later, we will have to defeat their government. Doing it before they have a nuclear weapon would be preferable.
I THINK THAT IN THE LONG HAUL PRES BUSH AND THE U.S GOVERMENT WILL BE SEEN AS THINKING AHEAD OF TIMES THE FUTURE WILL BE A NEW PLACE FOR ALL PEOPLE OF THE PLANET LETS JUST LOOSE THE NUKES AND HAVE A BIG CELEBRATION THANK GOD THAT WERE NOT THE WORLDS GARBAGE CAN OR ELSE WE WOULD BE ATTACKING OURSELVES NOT JUST ROGUE COUNTRY'S SUCH AS IRAN FULL OF HATE AND BITTERNESS TOWARDS NON MUSSLUM'S LETS GET ER DONE AND MAKE AN EXAMPLE HELL LETS NUKE UM AND SEE IF ALLAH CLEANS UP THE MESS OR ARE WE LEFT WITH A BETTER AND SAFER WORLD ...PLEASE STAND BEHIND AMERICA AND IT'S TROOPS NO MATTER THE INDIFFERENCE'S WE MAY HAVE THE WORLD IS FULL OF THREATS LETS NOT BECOME THE BIGGEST THREAT..TO OURSELVES BY FORCING OUR WAYS ON THE WORLD FOR WE ARE NOT YET PERFECT BUSH IS VISIONARY THE WORLD WILL BE BETTER BECAUSE OF HIS VISION OF A FREE WORLD DEMOCRACY FOR ALL AND GIVE YOUR NEIGHBOORS A HAND SOUNDS JUST LIKE ALL THE BABLE ON THIS PAGE DON'T IT BUT IT'S TRUE WHAT REPLY DO YOU HAVE FOR THAT GOV AND NON GOV KNOW IT ALLS ...MAYBE WE SHOULD ELECT A CITIZEN PRES AND A POLITICAL PRES LET THEM FIGHT IT OUT POLITICS CAN'T WIN WITHOUT A BACK BONE ....U.S.A. FOR ALL CREATED EQUAL
AMERICA IS A FREE COUNTRY, AARON JOHNSON MAY SAY WHAT HE WANTS - HOWEVER, WITH FREEDOM COMES THE RESPONSIBILITY TO THINK AND BE CERTAIN OF WHAT YOU SAY AND GIVE PROOF, NOT A PUFF OF HOT AIR. ALSO, OUR ENEMIES NOW KNOW THEY HAVE ANOTHER DISGRUNTLED AMERICAN AND THEY CAN CONTINUE THEIR PSYCH WAR AGAINST US.
I see lots of people that like to remember when iranian students kidnapped american diplomats. I agree with you, that was Ilegal, for those of you that like to remember the past, why dont you mention a Mohammed Mossadegh, he was a democratic elected iranian first minister, overthrown in the most Ilegal way by a military coup organized by CIA. American government has not respected international laws in the past, why is someone horrified if they say it is not respecting the international laws now??
Do the words " Gulf of Tokin" ring a bell with anyone?
I feel no sympathy for the Iranian Diplomat hiding behind his title as a politician. There is a war going on. Our troops are being killed, and some maimed for life. Its only common sense that Iran is doing everything possible to aid our soldiers enemies. I just wish that our leaders had the guts and courage of soldiers, and deal with Iran directly. Instead of all this "beating around the bush". Our leaders from both parties placed our soldiers there to kill or be killed. The least that our leaders can do is to make their job easier. Our leaders ought to be extremely grateful for our soldiers willing to fight for their screwed up ideas on how to fight a war.
What's really scary about the Iranian situation is that Gates is now professing "evidence" of Iranian weaponry and explosives being used by our "enemy" (whomever that may be). All this "evidence" is leading up to justification for us to attack. It might be noted that U.S. weaponry can be found in the hands of the "enemy" (see T-V clips of the weapons found by the bodies and houses of the enemy). So, does that mean we attack our manufacturers or is it okay so long as the weapons are sold first to a neutral buyer under the assumption that our hands are clean if that neutral buyer then resells the weapons on the "open" market and they just happen to get in the hands of the enemy. The past wars, WWII and Vietnam was proof that lots of our weapons were used against us. War is about killing. We kill enough of them and we win. Pretty simple and pretty ugly but that's the way it is. We just have to make sure we are killing the right enemy for the "right" reasons.
Loss of life is never a pleasant thing to experience. Nearly everyone feels the pangs of loss and emptiness. Seasoned soldiers are usually the last to want to go to war. But when a nation decides a course of action should be taken, then it should be followed through on. This is not the time to be wishy washy. Just because things aren't going exactly as planned in Iraq, which is nearly impossible to predict anyway, is not in itself the sole reason to stop our progress. Our nation has a goal to bring stability and a better life (in it's opinion) to others. This opinion represents what a majority of U.S. citzens hold dear. It would be silly to assume our nation doesn't have some motivations that aren't apparent to all. However, what country willingly sacrifices the lives of it's men and women for no gain? We definately have something to gain (stable oil flow, future business agreements, strategic ground in a fight against extremist values contradictory to our own, etc.). We also have much to lose. The decision to undertake this war was made, and we need to see this thru to fruition. Is the U.S. perfect? No, however, you have to admit that the proof is in the pudding when it comes to our ability to organize large groups of people. Think how far our country has come in a fraction of the time the rest of the developed nations have come. Are we a utopia? Of course not! However, we do have many societal mechanisms in place which enhance our quality of living. Our country is a work in progress as any government or nation is. We are struggling to carve and understand our own complex identity. As much as we wish others would see things our way, we don't realize they can't see things our way. Governmental/Religion controlled media simply does not allow people the ability to see things from other perspectives. Our media is not perfect, however, its strength lies in its diversity and perspective. Each of us has a choice to hear all sides. This strength is also our weakness when it is used against a focused collective. Media like statistics can be made to represent pretty much whatever the creator wants. It is each individual who harbors the responsibility to be educated enough to sift through the chaff and wheat. Mr. Johnson, I believe that our country has some bad people who make some very bad decisions, however, I also believe that it is a discredit to the majority of good people that make up the United States to assume all of our actions are corrupt. Thank anyone for bearing with me this long.
If it were our people that did this , i hope the ransom is high enough to cover the cost for war on terror. Eye for an eye.
I for one am embarrassed by the neo-cons who seem more like neo-Nazis. Let Aaron have his opinion. If you haven't forgotten (or you have been brainwashed by the religious right), that is what America is all about.
Right on Brice, you hit the nail on the head. You know what this war is really about.
The content direction pursued over the past five years by NBC/MSNBC NEWS, especially within the last four months since the Democrats won the House and Senate, has blatant purpose. NBC/MSNBC NEWS has chosen to be the Left Wing media pipeline of America. GOVERNMENT CONSPIRECY is their claim of the day! During the evening I surf the news back and forth between MSNBC News, FOX Cable News & CNN. Lately MSNBC News has become an absolute Hard Left Gang-Bang. The biggest offender is Keith Olbermann, a mediocre ex-ESPN sports announcer who anchors the news program called “Countdown” speaking primarily to youthful enthusiasts who can’t count. A well-groomed Groucho Marx look-a-like, Olbermann nightly bashes President Bush, the White House staff, Republicans and any U.S. Military operative deployed in the Middle East. This past evening Olbermann substantiated how media operates in this country. He got into a staged analytical discussion with one of his coworkers on how Fox News attracts conservative viewers who are primarily older people and that his show along with MSNBC attracts the youth of America…claiming victory for tomorrow’s world. Oh yeah, Keith took this opportunity to make some disparaging remarks about his wanted competitor Bill O’Rielly who’s ratings are apparently thumping Groucho’s butt. So he is essentially claiming that NBC/MSNBC NEWS strategy is to provide liberal shock news for the minority Left Wing. Sounds like a money losing idea to me! But maybe I am wrong? Howard Stern taught the world how shock media works. It is all about the advertising dollar’s investment ability to capture viewers and that is the driving force determining content direction for any entertainment medium. Since the first Iraqi War news has become a morphed form of viewer entertainment thus, you have a new kind of news. Of course you better make sure who your target audience is and how valuable they are to your advertising revenue model. My wild guess is that NBC/MSNBC NEWS executives have taken a fatheaded gamble that will soon fail miserably!
