Iranian kidnapping – an ‘embarrassing incident’

The strange saga of an Iranian diplomat abducted in Baghdad took another turn Wednesday with the revelation that Iraqi security officers possibly acting on orders from a rogue government department had abducted him.

The diplomat, assigned to the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad, was taken at gunpoint on Sunday by kidnappers wearing Iraqi security uniforms.

Iran's accusation that the United States was to blame has threatened to raise tension between the two countries even further.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the Iraqi government was holding four Iraqi military officers in connection with the kidnapping. He told NBC News in an interview that they were investigating whether the men acted on their own or were acting on orders from government officials.

"The government is determined to punish those responsible if they were part of any government entity," Zebari said." I don't want to jump to any conclusions but the type of the operations, the people who were arrested by the security forces, give us some doubts. There may be entities acting on their own."

Incident ‘not helpful’ for diplomatic relations
Zebari said the involvement of Iraqi military men in the kidnapping was particularly unfortunate since Iraq has been trying to convince other countries to send their diplomats here.

"It is a very embarrassing incident," he said. "On the one hand we are trying to establish a diplomatic presence here in Iraq by our neighbors, by other countries. These incidents are not helpful."

Jalal Sharafi, the Iranian embassy's second secretary, was abducted by gunmen wearing Iraqi uniforms and holding Ministry of Defense ID, Iraqi and Iranian officials said. Iraqi officials said the men may have been fired from the ministry but still retained the credentials.

Zebari said he believed the diplomat was alive. He said U.S. officials he had met with had assured him that the United States was not involved in the abduction. The Iraqi government has previously protested the arrests of several Iranians with diplomatic credentials by U.S. forces in northern Iraq.

U.S.- Iranian tension
The United States has accused Iran of involvement in attacks on U.S. forces here. Asked whether he believed that was the case, Zebari told NBC he would not rule it out.

"Really I have no hard evidence, but I wouldn't discount it at the same time," he said. He said he had raised the issue numerous times with Iranian officials, including as recently as Tuesday, stressing they could not engage in attacks on American forces on Iraqi soil.

Zebari said he was hoping to widen a planned conference in Baghdad of neighboring countries to include the United States and European countries. If the U.S. participated it would be sitting down with Iran, with which it has no diplomatic relations.

Give us a break. U.S. Deathsquads under "Negropotty" have been going on for sometime. Only someone living in a hole wouldn't see through this smokescreen. I'm embarrassed by my goverment's illegal methods.
Isn't it ironic the Iranian govenment is so upset about thier diplomats being taken hostage. Especially when it was they, many years ago, who did exactly the same thing to American diplomats when they took over the American Embassy during the Carter Presidential years. I have no sympathy for their government - I only have sympathy for the innocent individuals who are used for political leverage in an unending circle of violence.
The war between US and Iran Started long time ago; only remainng to go into flow scale, for that to be instigated by Israeli invasion has only remained to be seen, However, these acts of kidnapping should not be done in Iraqi soil. These two bullies needs to scare their woes in Arabia sea perhaps, and spare already suffering Iraqi citizen from this guagmire.
By "U.S. Deathsquads", do you mean killing people who are shooting at you. Give us proof, not blowhard babble.
Aaron Johnson,if your not pleased with our deathsquads and methods ..........you can always go and get your bags packed and see what it is like from the other end of the barrel hehehehe..........
Thankfully we have people like Aaron Johnson who are in Iraq and tied directly to the truth of the situation. I'm still very sorry about the day when you quit your job at the CIA. If you were to stay, you probably would have exposed all the evils of the US by now and made certain that all the good and pure people were in control of the world. Thanks Aaron!
I'm embarrassed by fellow American like Aaron Johnson. What fools.
If the US did have something to do with the abduction of the Iranian diplomats then I say "about time we take some action against those that are killing our armed soldiers in Iraq". One thing I have learned since this war has started is that the Democrats in Washington, DC and the French have one word in common --- "RETREAT".
Aaron is correct. A Gulf of Tonkin moment is nigh, and this has the DNA of US agent provocateurs. The Administration's exit strategy is through Iran as the neo-cons have always planned it...
What meetings do you attend to know this information? My guess is you have no inside information but rather just another know it all. Your Bush for the other side. SAD!
Who is "us" you got a mouse in your pocket? I, personally have served my country and would appreciate it if you would not include me in your ramblings on. You speak of us as a team or nation united together....I am afraid as long as we have so many nay sayers and people who willingly turn their allegiance we will never again truly be a team.
Yeah, just assume itis us evil Americans not the honest dependable Iraqi soldiers. Or Iran could have staged this just to have more hard feelings among their citizens and the Arab world toward America. And don't worry Aaron, America is ashamed of you too!
Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia.....what a bunch of junk. These kids are dying for nothing!!!.... FREEDOM? FIGHTING FOR AMERICA? it is ALL JUNK It's about Bush and all his friend making money off of OIL. I'm so tired of it. They are all criminals.
Many Americans are ashamed our government's ways of late. However at this point I have not heard of any proof that the US was involved in this particular case. I believe that most US citizens, not counting those who follow blindly one particular party or the other, are tired of the way the current administration has been conducting affairs. Americans don't want leadership that changes laws under the guise of homeland security in order to further their own agendas and losing their rights as part of the process. Americans don't want to be hated by other countrys. This is what I believe has been happening under the present administration and at some point the average American will have had enough and stand up and say so.
And how the hell do you know that? Back up your statements with facts, or are you too brain washed by the liberal medias to understand what is fact and what isn't?
RE: Aaron Johnson (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 1:45 PM) Oh really Aaron? Would care to site some evidence or are you just spouting a bunch crap without thinking about it? Mr. Johnson is a perfect example of how a little education is a dangerous thing. There are several examples of subterfuge performed to appear as coalition action. An example would the Jan 27 abductions from a storefront in Baghdad. Apparently Aaron J. has some sort of divine guidance that gives him more information than everyone else.
when will authorities get down to business and quit blaming each country and help the innocent people of bagbad .we are not happy with the violence and bloodshed .people being mamed the suffering on all sides.it will take a very long time to heal
Iran set this up to frame the U.S.A. Kidnapping is no task to them; they hang there own kids for petty crimes.
Illegal methods have been occuring for thousands of years between governments at odds and occasionally at peace with each other. Many of our citizens since its founding has been kidnapped, beaten, tortured due to being caught doing things illegal and legal. Anytime two countries are at extreme odds with each other, many nasty things occur that will be reported on the news, and many more that will never be reported. It is not a good thing if we were directly or "indirectly" involved in kidnapping this Iranian Diplomat, but rest assured it is not the first time this has happened with our government, and it certainly won't be the last.
Aaron Johnson is a retard, learn about whats really going on before attempting to sound intelligent on here.
Whether or not our government had a hand in this is irrevelant. Iran is actively undermining US interests in the region. 'Only someone living in a hole wouldn't' know that Iran is seeking a confrontation with us as much as we are seeking it with them. While conflict is obviously in nobody's best interest i'd be more embarrassed if we just allow Iran to continue with there actions unabetted. US military personal are dying b/c of Iranian involvement. Why are you upset if you target those very Iranian officers that are targeting our personal? Personally i find Iran complaining about Diplomatic violations rather ironic. How quickly it is forgotten that Iran is guilty of the most blatant violation of diplomatic ethics ever. Nor should it be forgotten that many of those student terrorist that took the US Embassy hostage are still running the show in Iran today. If arresting Iranian Dipolomats saves american live that the only embarrassment is that we haven't arrested the others yet. PS. IF this diplomat was infact taking part in the arming of Sadr or any other militia than he violated UN rules governing diplomats and legally forfeited his diplomatic immunity.
Aaron...you're next.
And I am embarrassed by comments from people who believes the way you do Aaron.
Always an American willing to mistrust the U.S. Goverment but never brings forth the question could it have been the corrupt goverment of Iran that set up the entire scenario to give the Hollywood liberals a soap box to blame the US. Why don't we invite Tim Robbins and Hanoi Jane to live in Tehran.
only an idiot like Mr Johnson would jump to that conclusion. i can assure you as a former Army officer, no officer would issue an order like taking a diplomatic envoy. this is what idiots state when they have never served their country and probably has never ever been to the Middle East. ignorance is bliss Mr Johnson. we will win this struggle
Theres nothing here at all. It is what it is. Iran has been and will continue to be an antagonizer and an aggresor in Iraq, where they have no business. The US is desperatley trying to help the Iraqis and we surely dont need Iran meddling in Iraqs internal affairs.. you dont have to be a rocket scientist to know what Iran REALLY wants.
Wait a minute, give U.S. a break. United States soldiers were not responsible for the Sunday abduction of an Iranian official. If U.S. officials said that the United States wasn't involved, then they weren't involved. Why would anyone put their own countrymen at risk overseas by publicly stating otherwise.
Who are terorists? They kidnappe, kill civelians, tortue,They have no regardes for international laws...and the list goes on. You be the judge.
US DEATHSQUADS? I'M EMBARASSED BY AARON'S STUPIDITY. OUR SOLDIERS ARE JUST TRYING TO SURVIVE AND SUCCEED WHILE THE U.S. PUBLIC AND LIBERAL GOVT DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO UNDERCUT THEIR EFFORTS!!! WHERE'S THE CRITICISM FOR THE ENEMY? WHERE'S THE BACKBONE TO SEE A TOUGH ASSIGNMENT THRU? ARE WE SUPPOSED TO TAKE IRAN'S WORD ON THIS? NONE OF THE REPORTS SAY THAT THE KIDNAPPERS WERE AMERICAN. IT ALL LISTED THEM AS IRAQI! IF OUR GUYS ARE GUILTY, TRY THEM AND CONVICT THEM! OTHERWISE, GIVE THEM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT AND YOUR SUPPORT!!!
Aaron, remember the US Embassy incident in 1979? What hole were you referrring to? US Death Squads? If the US stays out of everybodys business then we would be the bad guys for not helping, we try and help and we are the bad guys for intervening. Nobody want to police anybody they want the US to do it, we can't make anyone happy. Move to Central America or Cuba if the US is so bad.
hey aaron, why don't you go live in a country were you have no rights, right to have freedom of speech and right to go and do as you please. our boys are dying for your freedom. i am sick of you and people like you that haven't got a clue, these Muslims want to take over the world they want it to be there laws not ours they want to take our freedom away they want to destroy life as we know it, and you step on the graves of the men that are fighting now and before them. You are a disgrace to this country get the hell out along with the rest of you that think the same. SZ
So I can see you are a democrat.
I believe this is the work of Israel. They have the courage to do what needs done. Israel allows their military to do their job, where as the politically correct country we live in ties our military's hands. Israel will be forced take out Iran's nuclear program. The UN is a lame duck full of corruption and hypocrasy, and America has lost her resolve for freedom, democracy, and human rights. Sadly, Israel will soon be left standing alone to fight the terriorists and extremist Islam.
It is interesting that the Kurds and the Iraqi government strongly protested our seizure of the 5 Iranian diplomats a few weeks ago and we challenged our own Iraqis. It's interesting that we now want to change Maliki after we changed Allawi because, after an election got him there, we didn't think Allawi was able to bring stability. Maybe the U.S. Supreme Court should just declare Bush President of Iraq and we can get rid of those annoying Iraqis altogether. Immediate withdrawal in a manner wholly safe for the troops. The crystal ball and ouija boards that those predicting calamity if we leave have not worked well in the past, and the calamity that will occur if we leave will also occur if we stay, except our families will die.
To the American govt READ MY LIPS nobody believes a word you say in the UNITED STATES.You are a embarrasment to the GOOD people of the United States.God fearing people do not do the things you have done.HITLER AND BUSH I SEE NO DIFFERENCE.
give me a break who the hell cares about an Iranian diplomat, ask him what he was there for and make sure yo investigate because the 9/11 commision showed that information had been linked to the diplomats. come on people let's get over the PC war, war is to be fought to win and win only. the last country to try and fight a civilized war was the british and they got their ass kicked by a bunch of farmers called colonists. stop believing that it is only us that commit this atrocities. support the troops and don't judge until you have a gun in your hand in Iraq. as much as I don't believe we should be there , we are, let's kick the stuffing out of the insurgency regardless of country they are from.
Boy,talk about speculation I would guess you have all this inside information yea! Who is Negropotty? I interpret that as a black potty! I know your type you are basically antisocial and hated your parents and can't hold a legitmate job but it's everyone else's fault.
I'm embarassed that you think you are an American Mr. Johnson. These are just one of many games that are being played on the U.S.
I mean really? I guess there haven't been other abductions where the kidnappers had Iraqi Army or Police uniforms? And this is different how? It could be our government or it could be the Sunnis who oh by the way bomb Shities all over Iraq everyday. You're probably right since the Shitie and Sunni groups kill innocent people (all countries although mostly Iraqi) everyday. Men, women, and children. Yeah, it probably wasn't them. They wouldn't want to provoke Muslims to hate the US more. They wouldn't want to escalate the situation over there. Nah, you're probably right.
These are Not the first or the only diplomats that have been kidnapped at gunpoint by the USA forces. The first ones were openly and proudly Kidnapped by US forces and this created a lot of criticism from everyone. Is it any wonder that these new kidnappings are being done more discreetly? Next they might kidnap or kill the diplomats while wearing so-called "terrorist" uniforms. The ultimate intent is to push and poke at Iran in order to get them to lose their cool and respond back with force. Lets hope the Iranians remain wise enough to see what is being done and play the game wisely.
The last person that was living in a hole was executed a few weeks back if I remember correctly. I think his name was Saddam.
no one is holding a gun to your head to live in the United States, If you dont like it run to Canada or Mexico, you can always enjoy there wonderful liberties. It is so frustrating to hear people in the USA such as yourself alwasy complaining of what is wrong or what has not been done right by the government. You are free to leave anytime you want!! quit being a crybabie. You do not have one once of validity that there are death squads running around
Nice racism there Aaron Johnson. Don't you know that's not politically correct?
Give me a break Aaron. If you are embarrased by your country and its legal methods of keeping you and the rest of our brothers and sisters safe maybe this is not the country for you.
Hey Aaron. Then move to Iran. Opinions like yours are just plain ridiculous. US Death squads?? Please.. A couple of incidents of soldiers losing their minds over there and a couple of more involving brainless idiots and we are running death squads now?? Remember that Iraq under Sadaam was at war with Iran. Could it not be the Baathist element that is responsible for this abduction?? Besides, aren't the Iranian's methods to be considered "illegal"? They are the ones financing Shiite death squads and supplying weapons strong enough to penetrate US armour. Let me guess you would like to see them be allowed to develop their "peaceful nuclear program" too.... You give us a break...........
Isn't it ironic that a government that took part in the American embassy takeover and subequent holding of diplomats hostage for 444 days is now complaining that their diplomat has not been protected and is being illegally held.
Even if there is a video release of the Iranian being beheaded by men wearing red white and blue eating hotdogs and drinking budweiser, I can't bring myself to feel sorry for Iran that their own tactics were used against them.
I think most Americans wish they were envolved and very very few know that they were! Read about it in 20 years....
US presence is not helpful to Iraq. It is clear that US military and security apparatus are becoming increasingly frustrated, and resorting to kidnapping, etc. US out of Iraq, now!!
I think that a good portion of you are all nuts. Creative thinking is what this country needs. I'd rather have every idea on the table so that we could scrap them then what it appears most of you all have succumed to. It seems most of you only want to put on the ones that think that somehow the US is above acting out of order. I think the whole debate and conversation has missed the whole point. US Deathsquads? This really isn't a stretch to consider this, but if you think about it, truthfully doesn't make a lot of sense. Iran setting this up? You have just basically said that two different Iraqi forces in seperate areas worked together to get this done without knowingly doing this for Iran. Is Iran really that deep into the Iraqi military and Police force? Maybe. Iraqi Govt setting this up? I doubt it. Bath party? That sounds rather plausible in this mess. Regardless of what it is, the point is exactly what the Army Major stated.... Most of us do not have any clue to this kind of "tribal" society. It is extremetly complex. The way the people operate is completely different from how an average american would operate. I think a very simple and not perfect way to state this, but I hope you see the point instead of reading too deep into it. The easist explantion is to look at them like countries with thousands of special interest groups that all have guns and truly believe politics gets them nowhere until you get rid of the head of the opposite interest group. Add some religion and faith in there and wow... what a mix. And last but not least, it is these kinds of episodes that regardless of who did them, when you begin to add them up will blow up into a massive misunderstanding that will eventually lead to war... again. I do not believe that there is a "winning" position on this and I think that its becomming more clear that as the internal strife increases, it will wedge us right out of the country whether we want to leave or not. I think the entire conflict will grow so large, and we are close that the US will not be much of an influence anymore. Our planes rock when we decide to bomb the country, but after awhile, ground to ground fighting is the end-game, and can you win an insurgency mixed with sectarian fighting/civil war? It all comes back to that. Its not a matter of when we want to leave.. its a matter of when it becomes so crazy that we as a government will not be able to even figure out our mission. Which I am still confused on. Then again, how can you have a mission when the scene changes daily? Ok, chew me a new one.
